[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171) So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. [opensuse] Raid, Raid6, what file system for good fault tolerance?

Hi list, speaking about software raid, not hardware controller based. I am trying to go for some local OpenSuse machine and adding some storage to it. Was considering Raid6, and now reading about a bit and people left and right scaremongering about the larger the disks these days in the double digit terabyte capacities even, the more likely it is that during a reconstruction of a raid subsequent errors would occur. I would absolutely like to keep my data consistent, and I am not thinking about double digit terabytes either, would stick to 2TB or 4TB disks, with Raid6 thats at least 4 physical drives. Now I am wondering if it possible to use a good robust file system that can add some more parity or check blocks or redundancy on top of the hardware disks, to absolutely be able to always read my data. I can't add multiple machines or like those high availability stuff like clusters and what not I read about DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device), or maybe I am just too scared by those technical terms or consider myself to be just a simpleton and wanting to keep it rather simple. My use case here is also not constant availablity, when a disk needs to be replaced, so be it, but I don't want to lose my data that I can not ever read certain parts of it again or such stuff. The thing that came to my mind was, if there is some file systems that would add redundancy and robustness onto the mdraid system of the linux kernel? Anyone with some useful insights? Roughly speaking, I was considering some simple pcie esata interfaced controller card and an external case enclosure with esata port and portmulitplier stuff inside, that can present at least 4 physical disks as JBOD, just a bunch of disks, so that the Linux can seem them all separately. Speed and rebuild times are not my concern, but data persistence and data integrity. Not even number of physical disks, I could live with even one of those 8 bay device enclosures and cases that are out there on the market. [opensuse] Spec'ing a 50 TB dedicated storage subsystem and room to grow?

All, I bought a used iSCSI based Drobo in 2016 with 50TB in it. It works great, but it isn't fast by today's standards. (100 MB/sec absolute max). And I never got it to work from openSUSE (Windows and Mac did work). I now need to buy something similar, but with fast I/O and Linux support: 10 Gbit Ethernet and fibre-channel may be my only options? Or are there point-to-point SAS external racks I should consider? Also, I will likely want to put a SSD based cache in the mix at some point. It could be integrated into the storage subsystem, or I could use something like bcache and have the SSD be in the server,. It just needs to be reliable and fast. Recommendations? (I'm thinking used and $10K at the high-end for the subsystem including PCIx cards and switches, if needed.) == details I need to buy a server with 50TB usable disk for a production environment. A high speed disk subsystem is critical. And the project may scale up over time. It doesn't need to be a fail-over cluster, just a single server. I'm looking at used equipment most likely. I was thinking one with 4 CPU sockets would let me start with 2 CPUs and then expand to 4 later on. Lots of RAM capacity would also be great. I only see 2TB drives max. I'm hoping to use a Dell server because it's the preferred brand at my (new) job. Unless I'm missing something a standalone rack mount Dell won't work. I picked it because it is only a 5-year old design and it has 4 CPU sockets I can expand into as the server demand increases over time. [opensuse] SuSE 42.3 on laptop?

Hello, my trustful laptop had it's final shutdown after 11 years. There are currently 2 choices for my usage (watching videos, doing 3D printing, usenet, dual ethernet). Dell Inspiron 7577 ( 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 16GB) Acer Aspire VX5 ( 512GB SSD + 1.000GB, 16GB) All of them are missing a DVD Writer (or even BluRay player). So which combination of USB (3.0?) Bluray player/DVD writer can I use with the above laptops to install SuSE 42.3 from DVD beside that Windows 10 (dual boot)? Also I need a 2nd Ethernet. I was using PCAMCIA/Cardbus up to now which worked fine, now I have to dump this working hardware also. :-/ Which USB-Ethernet dongles do you suggest? Is there any other better combination? [opensuse] dd to copy a partition?

Hi Folks, One of my acolytes reported that she used dd to copy one disk partition to another partition on the same disk, as in: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda2 She said it failed, but was a little fuzzy about exactly what happened (I wasn't there), just that the destination partition appeared to be "empty" after the operation. I don't know how she made that determination. I've been doing UNIX stuff for a long time but I never would have thought to use dd in this fashion. Maybe instinct? But assuming that the two partitions are exactly the same size, what could possibly go wrong? I think she was using 42.3, probably with ext4. Definitely not btrfs, if that matters. Hello everyone, Firstly I am cross posting this across a number of mailinglists because this post affects several, but I would ask that you keep your replies / feedback on the openSUSE project list as not to fragment discussion. It has been raised with the board by several members of the community that some of our mailinglists have not been working as effectively as we would like. As such and as raised in our annual discussion with the community during the conference, the board has decided to take a couple of steps that we hope will resolve these issues or that will at least be a starting point in resolving these issues. Firstly we have created a new opensuse-support(a)o.o mailing list, we as the board felt that in the transition from factory -> tumbleweed in particular the change in role for opensuse(a)o.o did not work well and in many cases there was an attitude that factory/tumbleweed issues should still be posted on the factory mailing list. As such we have created the support mailing list to help clarify these changes in policy that we don't believe worked when we tried to change them last time. In short we would like you to use opensuse-support(a)o.o whenever you require support whether it is for Tumbleweed, Leap (regardless of whether you are using a Leap beta or not) or any other project under the openSUSE umbrella. This brings us to the next issue, posting bugs / bug reports on mailing lists rather then bugzilla. This is a practice we would like to see stopped and we will be gently reminding people if they continue posting bugs on mailinglists, this especially includes if a package / application breaks when updating tumbleweed / leap (including beta's). We would ask that you search for your issue prior to reporting but in case you accidentally report a duplicate bug its easy for us to mark it as such, also if you report something that is intentional and not a bug it doesn't take long to mark it as such, so if in doubt file a bug rather then posting to a mailing list, there is useful information for filing bugs at the following links [1][2]. But if you are really stuck with trying to file your bug the friendly people at opensuse-support(a)o.o can support you through the process. The board hopes that with the changes outlined above the contents of the opensuse-factory(a)o.o will go back to just being general distro development discussion so if your post to openSUSE factory is something other then that think twice about where the more appropriate place to post is. The new tumbleweed snapshots will continue to be posted to factory but we would ask you do not reply to them in order to report issues / bugs. If a bug is reported that a package maintainer believes will cause significant issues for most tumbleweed users ie not being able to boot / login or severe data loss we still invite the maintainer to post a warning to opensuse-factory but such issues happen very rarely and as such we don't expect to see many such posts. The board has decided that it would like to see how well these changes work before deciding to add / remove / change openSUSE's mailing lists further. Once again, pressing Alt-F2 and then entering #<command> does not bring up the man page. This was a very useful feature, that hasn't worked for some time. Any chance of getting it back? [opensuse] Leap 15.0 Networking Woes (NetworkManager conflicts with Wicked)

Hi, I have networking problem with fresh install of Leap 15.0 on 2 pcs, which seem to be similar to the one I had when upgraded 42.3 to Leap 15 late beta. However, this is 100% fresh install on reformatted SSD in HP desktop. Symptoms is the same - after first restart networking service (with Wicked) is broken. Examining logs showed that for whatever reason NetworkManager is not fully disabled. 1 - NetworkManager-wait-online.service still tries to start and fails with timeout error 2 - KDE NetworkManager plazma applet tries to initiate connection on eth0 and fails. It should show “ NetworkManager is not running” instead. I tried to fix this: 1) Disabled NetworkManager.service and NetworkManager-wait-online.service with systemctl disable NetworkManager.service systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service After restart annoying NetworkManager still disrupts networking. 2) Switched in Yast Wicked -> NetworkManager, the back, restart. Problem the same. rcnetwork restart cures problem till next system reboot. I can’t remove NetworkManager because it also deleted KDE / MATE. Switching KDE to MATE do not changes anything. Anyone can suggest what system component (I suspect some freedesktop or dbus-org services) disrupts networking ? [opensuse] Idiot Question about Btrfs

For historical reasons my longstanding practice has been to keep two, sometimes three, separate installations of openSUSE on this multi-boot machine. I use one of them as the principal productive installation, with the other(s) available for experiments or as recovery tools if I screw something up in the main installation. Each of the installations has its own segregated (ie non-shared) /home. But, also for historical reasons, they do all share three additional custom mounts, two for general data and one for images, videos and soundfiles. All installations including the three custom mounts are in ext4 only. Currently I have Leap 42.3 as the main daily use installation, with Leap 42.2 and Tumbleweed “in reserve”. My intention is to replace 42.2 with Leap 15 as a fresh installation (not an upgrade), for use as the principal productive installation. My question is about filesystems. I’ve watched the various discussions about Btrfs with interest, though I haven’t understood much of it and have so far chosen to stick with ext4 throughout. But Btrfs seems to be improving, including in the context of rollback. So, what are the implications, if any, of installing Leap 15 using its default Btrfs and xfs filesystems in place of the existing Leap 42.2 installation but leaving the three additional data partitions (and the other installations) formatted in ext4? Alternatively, should I also convert the three shared data partitions now in ext4 to Btrfs? If so, does that mean that the root filesystem for each of the other installations should also be converted to Btrfs? [opensuse] Grub Customizer broken in 15.0

I installed 15.0 on my notebook computer, where I have both Linux and Windows installed. This means I need a boot menu to select which OS I want to use. In the past, it was possible to edit the boot menu. Someone decided to "improve" things by removing that possibility. I then had to install Grub Customizer to edit the menu. That's now broken with 15.0. On top of that, my Grub menu has 15.0 twice, but no mention of Windows and no way to fix that. Is there any way to edit the menu now? [opensuse] Connection doesn't work with some wifi networks

Hello, I'm on Tumbleweed with network manager and KDE. With some wifi networks (now 2), network manager can connect but it has no data flux and the ping doesn't work. [opensuse] Problem with leap 15 upgrade

I started to perform an upgrade from 43.2 to Leap 15 and received an error warning: "Some partitions on the system on /dev/sdc2 are mounted by kernel-device name" I had mounted the partitions by UUID. Is UUID that what is meant by a kernel device name? Because I was under the impression that the UUID belonged to the device. Should that cause the system upgrade to fail? I get message Execution of Command ""[["?usr.sbin.grub2-mkconfig","-o","/boot/grubd/grub.cfg"]]" failed Error output: Generating grub configuration file... and more., Then: ERROR:failed to lookup rootid:inappropriate ioctl for device. Is this a problem with the use of UUIDs? The first warning suggests changing the "mount-by" method to any other method. Don't know which other one to pick. Using google it appears that UUID is the most recommended. But another link says that the it you recreate the partitions they will get different UUIDs. I looked in /dev/disk and see by-id, by-label, by-path and by UUID. I would use by-id, but am concerned that all of the devices may not be known. Like 4GB SSD drives. By-path appears vulnerable to the pci id changing if one moves the drive. I usually do not put labels on all of my partitions, so do not know how what by label would look like. [opensuse] KRDC issues after upgrading Tumbleweed

I've been using KRDC for over a year now without any issues, but after upgrading Tumbleweed this past Tuesday, none of my remote desktop connections work anymore -- Windows 7, 2003, 2008, or 2012. I can't find any logs or debugging options for KRDC, and running it directly from the command line doesn't turn up anything to the console. All that happens is when you try to open up a connection, the screen flashes blue for a half second, and then closes again. Is there any way to troubleshoot what's going on? I have this little script that shows my problem. It is broke or is sg_turs broken? #!/bin/bash sg_turs /dev/sr0 > /dev/null RDY=$? echo "RDY = ${RDY}" This script always says the sg_turs commands exit status is 0. Even with the door open and no disk installed. The man page for the sg_turs command says: EXIT STATUS The exit status of sg_turs is 0 when it is successful (e.g. in the case of a mechanical disk, it is spun up and ready to accept commands). For this utility the other exit status of interest is 2 corresponding to the "not ready" sense key. For other exit status values see the sg3_utils(8) man page. Hi all, Not sure if my situation is unique to my hardware, but no matter how I try to install (from a live usb) open leap 15 I receive the same error when the install tries to configure grub2 The first lines are similar to grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg Failed error 127 There are several lines where a os-prober issued blkid command not found and a final line where in /etc/grub.d/80-… btrfs is command not found. However I chrootted in to root and ran the same command with no error (and subsequently it now boots). Is this a known issue or have I stumbled upon a unique hardware issue? Thanks! All, On Leap 15 with FF 60, the text boxes/input boxes are twice their normal height which is pushing information off my weather page. Hi, So far I'm happy with Leap 15.0. The system felt stable in the last few days. But when I tried to login today, the system was very sluggish. It took me a couple of minutes to start atop and figure out what's going on. btrfs-balance.sh locked my computer for 15+ minutes I'm not sure whether this is a new script with Leap 15 or whether it was already in 42.3 or maybe disable. So I let it run once. When I started it again manually, it ran less than a second. But I would prefer it btrfs balance wouldn't freeze the system. Should I open a bug report with suse? Hi ! I just found that upgrade from Leap 42.3 to 15.0 breaks Teamviewer 12 compatibility. Verified on 2 PCs. Teamviewer GUI simply fails to launch (in terminal "launching GUI" freezes forever). Anyone have a fix to this issue? Teamviewer 13 works fine, however, in this particular case this is not an option. All, I had not seen this one before, upon zypper up -r update, the update to 4.4.132 failed with: (36/49) Installing: kernel-default-4.4.132-53.1.x86_64 .....................................................[error] Installation of kernel-default-4.4.132-53.1.x86_64 failed: Error: Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: warning: %post(kernel-default-4.4.132-53.1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, signal 2 Which left the box unbootable. Thankfully I still have the .126 kernel that was fine, so I booted 126 and reinstalled all kernel rpms, e.g. rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs --replacefiles (the list of noarch & x86_64 packages, devel packages and kernel sources. The install succeeded the 2nd time. What 'scriptlet' is it saying failed with signal 2? And what could cause such a failure? -- David C. I've seen this on multiple installations and just ignored the delay before, but it's seriously irritating that reboot can take more than 10 or so seconds to accomplish. Typically ntpd shows a 1.5m timeout, and often takes more than a minute to timeout and reboot to proceed. The only red I see in 'systemctl status ntpd' is restrict: ignoring line 52, mask '::' unusable. There seems to be a moment while zypper dup (coming from 42.3) when apparently the system process or daemon seems to be getting replaced or something happens, that follwing package updates/upgrades try to trigger a restart or reload of systemd or its parts and always fail into a timeout for a very long time over and over again, thus delaying the whole zypper dup process to a multi-hour (last system I tried) endeavour. I was waiting to post this message to the list, to make sure a second system were behaving the same (annoying to my likings) way, and yes it does. I will probably wait and sit this out again, and this will take many hours here.... Is this the proper way? Is this happening for everybody? Is this the desired experience for us end-users? Is there no better way of handling this? I cant remember of these tens? hundreds? of packages all trying to communicate to or with systemd components, and failing timeouting in previous opensuse releases/upgrades. Has this never been tested? Dont seems right to me. The layout works when I switch to the console. But in Xfce settings and the iBus app in the task bar, English was selected. That made it a bit of a challenge to login ... I am getting this error on all repos. Is this a connection issue or a database corruption? I found the PC had a faulty cmos battery and lost date/time. After an in-place online update, which otherwise looks good, I've run into an issue with gdm and LDAP. First behavior I ran into, conflict with nss-pam-ldapd and nss_ldap I chose nss-pam-ldapd, figured out that I needed to start nslcd.service and I can now log into console sessions. That said, I didn't really test console login with nss_ldap. GDM login no longer errors out quickly with a bad password note, it now looks to be doing something, waits a while, and then returns to the greeter. Looking through the logs I see this: gdm-password]: pam_unix(gdm-password:auth): authentication failure; (PID removed). I've looked through the /etc/pam.d files, and nothing seems obvious. I've tried pam-config --add --ldap, which, prior to adding nss-pam-ldapd showed 2 missing libraries. Yast config for LDAP shows the config, but applying any change trips an error about package install failure (no indication of what packages that I can see in logs or anywere else). This is what led me to switch to nss-pam-ldapd, but the Yast LDAP-client config still behaves the same way. Just wondering, I have observed that there is no oldschool ifconfig (package net-tools or what it was called) any more. I have never grown accustomed to ip and other tools just yet ;( ip a ip li and so comes to my mind as replacements to ifconfig, but i liked the counters and some stuff of ifconfig as a brief overview. there is ss and some other tools as replacements for netstat arp and more. Zypper dup showed me 600+ packages 'downgraded' probably due to alphabetical ordering or something for many packages when coming from leap 42.3. On a laptop with a touch pad: It's recently happened somehow that, when I'm In Firefox and want to scroll a long document down (e.g., to read more toward the bottom of the doc), I have to drag on the touchpad *upwards*. This is also true of all apps and widgets, e.g., to scroll down through a long menu, I have to drag *up*. Of course this is totally counter-intuitive. I've looked around quite a bit in the various configuration apps and settings, but haven't found a way to change this back to normal. [opensuse] openSUSE bug in Thunderbird?

Thunderbird by default blocks remote content in messages. The user has the option to whitelist exceptions to that rule, which should be retained by T'bird after it is closed. However, my T'bird is flushing the list every time it is closed. Checking prefs.js, the permissions are correct and the file is being saved after Preference changes. I did check prefs.js after manually entering/saving an exception in Preferences, but found nothing. The file is being saved upon doing a save in Preferences or upon closing the app. Googling the problem I found this on the Mozilla support site: "Thunderbird no longer saves remote content exceptions after program close." https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1204666 According to the OP who uses Tumbleweed, this is only happening for users of SUSE versions, including the SUSE Mozilla repo. Another poster indicated that s/he had corrected the problem by installing directly from the Mozilla site. I am running 52.8-63.1 which was just updated from 52.8-1.1 where I discovered the problem; the update did not correct it. Anyone else seeing this problem? Suggestions? This might be an upstream bug but perhaps others here can confirm if they've seen the same. Not sure when it started but it might have coincided with my recent update to TB 52.8.0ESR in the official Leap 42.3 updates a few days ago. I don't allow remote content in messages by default. But there's a bunch of things I get regularly where at some point in the past I have clicked the Preferences above the message and opted to explicitly allow remote content from whatever domain or address. [opensuse] History repeats itself: disk cache

A couple of years ago I had a problem where a program was streaming data to a file. Unfortunately, the OS cached the contents in RAM and only dealt with it occasionally. The problem was that this would cause periodic delays of a long time while the cache was dealt with. Write calls would have to wait until this task was completed. See the following for the original discussion: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2013-06/msg00069.html The solution that worked was to have something like the following running: while [ 1 ]; do sync; echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches; sleep 60; done & This really did solve the problem. We have now updated the OS for this system to Leap 42.3. It does not seem that this is having the same effect. One difference I see is that the sync command seems to take a very long time. Like over a minute each time. The fwrite() calls change from taking 1 msec to write a buffer (which is actually cached in ram by the kernel fs driver until later), to 20 secs or a minute. While we do buffer data, these long write delays are a problem. I have looked to see if there is anything different about /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches since we had originally used it. I think it was openSUSE 13.1 where we last saw that it seemed to be working as expected. Anyone have a clue about this? Maybe there is a better way to do this now? We are using ext4. So, I was getting ready for Leap 15 release and updating my repository files and I noticed these other directories on the server. What are those? It seems to me the packages in them are tha same as in the 42.3 repo, are they just logic links to the most recent leap version repos? Is this still a tested and proven scenario? Also what I read contradicting procedures about zypper dup from one distribution version to the next was, if one were to zypper update zypper itself first and only issue zypper dup as the last step or run the zypper from the still current distribution version. Back several opensuse versions ago, there were also conflicting compression algorithms and stuff used in rpm if i recall correctly where you even had to update rpm to the next distribution version first as well and so on. Any experiences yet? Also can we already zypper dup as the online repos except for the isos are already available and populated? Tried to see what package owned it -- as it was changed a few months back to use rsyslog instead of my configured ng-syslog, which I sorta thought was odd -- thought they usually put configfiles aside and labeled them with a special suffix, but didn't see any of those around. [opensuse] Virtualbox load

I've noticed that lately a Windows 10 virtual machine has become a real hog. Top shows virtualbox taking well over 100% sometimes over 200% of CPU. Memory usage appears OK, but starting up W10 causes a real performance hit on Linux and even within W10. Has anyone else noticed this? [opensuse] Wrong desktop for main window and pop-up windows (plasma)

Hi, I've got a problem that I can't seem to get rid of. I'm not sure if it's Opensuse (TW, several incarnation), plasma or Thunderbird. But here goes. I start Thunderbird like this from the KDE menu and I'm at desktop 2. Thunderbird is placed on desktop 1. kstart5 --desktop 1 thunderbird %u When I go from one mailbox/folder in Thunderbird to another and I get a question like "do you want to jump to <mailbox>?" in a pop-up window, Thunderbird goes back to the desktop I started it from (desktop 2). I tried the old kstart but it was the same problem. When I move it manually with right click on taskbar everything stays at correct desktop. Anyone seen this and knows of a remedy? I'll file a bug report if it's nothing obvious I missed. I start two other programs like this google-chrome and quasselclient but they doesn't seem to behave like this so I suspect that it's only Thunderbird and how it starts it's pop-up-windows. [opensuse] Boot message and cpu speed

I am running leap 14.3. I have tried to join the kernel list, but while I did receive a welcome message, nothing else followed. So I am posing the question here. On boot, with printout enabled, I receive numerous messages about temperature above threshold. But this occurs from an off state where the system is cold! From my dmesg log I have the following. The first elements are what I receive on my boot message, but right after it says all are normal. These are consecutive lines, so I do not understand that something happened between the first set of messages and the second. Any comments? Since the last update, VLC shows a black screen, when a mp4 or mkv are playing. A week ago everything was ok. Hello :-) on my kde plasma 5 (42.3), I can drag an executable of any application from Dolphin and get an icon that I can click to open the app. look at this screen copy: https://www.cjoint.com/doc/18_05/HEupzy0EQwh_Screenshot-20180520-172415.png but afterward, I can't figure where is the linked application. a right click only allow to add a keyboard shortcut. As you can see, the plasma desktop is *not* the usual desktop. [opensuse] wifi problems

I am here trying to use the wifi of my landlord. It is extremely slow, so slow that I cannot download emails with thunderbird due to time-out. The landlord says that ohers using the same wifi don't have problems. If use use that wifi on my phone, internet is fast and everything works, so I guess it is a problem on my computer. On the other hand, when I use my mobile phone as a 4G-hotspot and connect the laptop to this, internet works. Not very good, but it works. So it is not that my laptop in general doesn't like the internet, the problem is specific to the wifi of the house here. So my computer has something against the landlords wifi. What can it be? How can I find out? Things I noted (don't know if normal): - when connceted to that wifi, all mozilla programs need very long to open (thunderbird: 60 seconds, fireox 45 seconds). I am talking about the time from the click on the icon until the program window appears. When I connect over my mobile phone, those programs open normal. Do they really care about the connection? I think they should open without problems even if there is no connection at all, for local use...??? - sometimes the connection over the phone (using it as a mobile hotspot) also breaks down to very slow. Do I have a general internet problem that shows especially n the wifi here? I have no idea where to start to search for the error. Please help. I want to look at some MRI images from a CD the hospital sent, which expects to see a Windows box. I've decrypted the disk using J7Z and am now looking for something to view the images with. Apparently they're in DICOM format but YaST just shows me what seems to be a toolkit and a python binding. There seem to be various possible in various arcane repositories but I'm wondering if anybody else knows more about this? There's a bunch of Q&A on ubuntu sites and the general web but nothing for openSUSE specifically that I have found. [opensuse] NVIDIA Driver Updates

Hi, For the last few months, every time I installed an NVIDIA driver update my display manager won't come up afterwards (meaning after having rebootet the system). Having had this issue for a few times no I have however come up with a reliable workaround, running `systemctl restart display-manager`. Afterwards X will start reliable after reboots. But, only if I did the explicit restart one. Just doing another reboot won't fix it. Is anybody else observing this? Weirdly I actually have to restart the display manger as it claims to be running despite the journal telling that X died during startup. I have attached the journal for the display-manager unit showing the initial start and the successful start when I requested the restart. [opensuse] What happend to Firefox on 42.3 -> 52.8ESR or something to 60 but no session restore - all tabs nonrestored

Hi there, today some leap 42.3 system booted up and zypper dup, which probably brought in firefox 60 on this system, default repos. I think I remember that it was firefox 52.something ESR so far, today it became firefox 60 My tabs are coming back being displayed in the single main firefox window. but all tabs are empty, the address url is being shown in the address bar, but i cant even f5 refresh or the reload icon is grey, i need to navigate into the address area for each and every tab and press enter to make it load again. once the tabs content is loaded, i can again f5 refresh and all. what happend to the firefox session state or the related technical details? is this some known bug? [opensuse] No sound on Pi3?

Hi, Having a bit of trouble getting a Pi3 to play music (mp3) files :( Have a Sound Blaster Play! 3 USB , info below, and I can play the test sound form YaST sound configuration module. Yet when I want to play music using Rhythmbox, there's no sound. I installed PulseAudio but when I run pavucontrol all I get is "Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait..." . That message persists even after 5 minutes. The "Audio Mixer" in the xfce setting manager provides me information as in "GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem." The information is good but doesn't really help me help myself :(, installed gestreamer packages below. If I start "pulseaudio" in a terminal and then run "pavucontrol" the only "Output Device" I can see is the "Dummy Output". Thus it appears that my problem the recognition of the Sound Blaster USB sound device, although YaST sees the device and can play the test sound. Help is appreciated. [opensuse] Firefox 60 on Leap 42.3?

I just went to online update in Leap 42.3 and see there is one for Firefox from 52.8.0 to 60.0. That seems like quite a jump and again its surprising to see a major version change pushed as an update partway through a release's lifecycle. I expect that updating Firefox is going to cause me grief to get it back the way I like it at a minimum, and perhaps break some of my add-ons. I expect to have to deal with grief like that when I update my distro version, not at random intervals in between. If I wanted system that needed continuous tender loving care, I would choose Tumbleweed. So what's going on? I am running leap 42.3 and have just upgraded Firefox to 60.0. I have removed all of the vendor specific Flash option I had previously installed for YouTube. I still receive the message: Netflix Video Player Unavailable We're having trouble playing Netflix on your browser. Please make sure you have an official version of Firefox. Error Code:F7355 I have spent more than an hour with Netflix support and cannot get them to tell me what they video player they are looking for. I find it sad the level of expertise present in commercial online support. Does anybody have any suggestions? Many others say the have it working, so I find this a real nuisance. Anyone know what is going on with the standard opensuse repos? I am getting this error for both the oss and non-oss repositories: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/42.3/repo/non-oss/' The url is the one that comes directly from the opensuse website. Checking on that side, the folder /repodata does not exist. When I open my tumblr page in firefox now it appears as if I would have been logged out, or the cookie deleted. But when I click on the tumblr logo, a new window opens with my dashboard and I am obviously already logged in. If from that dashboard I try to open any link to any other tumblr (or to mine) in a new tab or window, again I have the "logged-out-view", eg no reblog, like icons and that stuff you have when logged in. How can I make that I stay logged in in several tabs, windows? This is quite strange... Hi, I am having an issue with starting Systemd services with Type=dbus in Systemd's user mode on openSUSE Leap 42.3. Specifically I am trying to use GameMode [1] but the problem seems to be a generic one. E.g., I have found several services in /usr/lib/systemd/user/ that have Type=dbus, are shipped with openSUSE, fand fail to start. E.g.: > systemctl --user start gvfs-daemon Failed to start gvfs-daemon.service: Unit dbus.socket failed to load: No such file or directory. There indeed is no dbus.socket file in /usr/lib/systemd/user/. Should there be? I'd assume that gvfs-daemon and glib-pacrunner are actually used in Gnome, so how can they be launched then? Any hints as to where I went wrong would be highly appreciated. I am using rpmbuild to make an RPM. I want to set the file name of the RPM by this option: --define "_rpmfilename %%{NAME}-%%{VERSION}-%%{ARCH}.rpm" My .spec file has this: Name: SomeName Version: SomeVersion The NAME and VERSION in the generated name are fine. But the ARCH is a mystery. It gets set to "i586". On the build system, "uname -a" reports: Linux os13-1 3.11.6-4-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 30 18:04:56 UTC 2013 (e6d4a27) i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux So I would expect any of these: i686 athlon i386 Not i586. What I really want is what "uname -i" provides. Which is "i386". But I do not seem to get that. Is there an RPM macro that is what uname -i lists? I have looked around in what rpmbuild --showrc reports. But I do not see this. The reason I want to use a variable here is that this should also build on a x86_64. On that type of system rpmbuild uses the expected value. All, I'm looking for the openSuSE way to configure my laptop power-button to suspend instead of power-off. Is there a yast module or some similar app for tweaking ACPI config that avoids writing a custom event-handler from scratch? Is there a current event-handler that can be tweaked? I would like the power-button to activate suspend just like lid-close does. [opensuse] jwplayer playback in Firefox 52ESR - missing codec?

I don't generally have problems playing videos around the Internet but I've stumbled across one that causes issues on my Leap 42.3 machine. See for example this page (the large video at the top): https://retro.tcl.fr/les-travaux-du-metro-de-la-croix-rousse/ I only see a black background with a badly coded (only partially visible) and annoyingly blasé message at the top saying 'in order to view the video, update your browser.' I'm on the standard Firefox 52.8.0ESR release from the Leap update repo. If I try with the latest Opera I see the video keyframe but playback still fails. However, on another box running a different Linux distro and with Firefox 58.0.2 (Quantum) the video plays fine. The info on the video leads me to jwplayer.com, where all the demo videos play fine on my openSUSE machine, so since it seems to be HTML5-based I don't know what specific codec this troublesome video is using. [opensuse] copying photos from iPhone to Leap 42.3

I'm trying to copy some photos from an iPhone to my openSUSE 42.3 box and am getting myself confused. Can anybody tell me the best way to do it, or point me to some simple but complete instructions? I've been following instructions from various web pages. I found something called ifuse and installed that. I plugged in the phone to a USB port and clicked Allow on the dialog the phone presented asking permission for the PC to access stuff. Leap asked me whether I wanted to open a file manager for the device, so I said yes and it opened PCManFM, and in the list of places at the left it showed an ejectable filesytem for the phone, but no photos and I couldn't figure how to access them. Following another hint, I started shotwell (not a program I normally use) and it came up and showed me all the photos on the phone, so at least I know that the USB connection is working. So I clicked on Import All but it failed to import any photos. The log is full of lines like: IMG_0003.JPG error message: [-107] Error retrieving file object for /store_feedface/DCIM/100APPLE/IMG_0003.JPG: Unknown error I can't even seem to find something that tells me where shotwell actually stores imported photos to double check. So I went back to PCManFM but now it isn't even showing the phone's filesystem! Help! [opensuse] It's all my fault

Hi, I gooned it up. I downloaded the tarball for rkhunter-1.4.4 from SourceForge some time ago, extracted it, and moved it to it's own folder before installing it. A few days ago, I downloaded the tarball for rkhunter-1.4.6 from SourceForge, extracted it, and installed it from the Downloads folder. I didn't move it to the folder that contained rkhunter-1.4.4. Now, rkhunter won't work. When I try to run rkhunter, konsole can't find it (opensuse leap 15.0). I tried to run rkhunter-1.4.4 and it brings the same result. I uninstalled rkhunter-1.4.4 using ./installer.sh --remove, same for rkhunter-1.4.6. Then I tried to install rkhunter-1.4.6 using ./installer.sh --install. The readout in konsole says its installed, but konsole readout says it can't find it. I then used dolphin to find every file for rkhunter, and removed them. then I tried to install rkhunter-1.4.6 using ./installer.sh --install. It installs perfectly, but when I try to run it, konsole can't find it. How do I fix this? May be you know this already, but Leap 15 is also available as a wonderful live: https://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.0/live/ wonderful, because it's taking all the available room on a usb device. I am running Thunderbird 52.7, X86_64, under leap 42.3. I am trying to get Netflix running under opensuse. I searched the "Unofficial guide to openSuse Leap 42.3" and found no mention of Netflix. With a Google search I found many proposed solutions, but many earlier solutions via Windows were obsoleted by time. I can not find a Netflix app under Mozilla extensions, though there are a few other apps that enhance Netflix, with the assumption that it is running. I found one page that stated that, after a long period of time, "Linux Users Can Easily Watch Netflix On Firefox". Basically the addition of HTML5 allowed the breakthrough. Can anybody shed light on the steps required to bring up Netflix on Leap 42.3? One thing I do frequently is paste images I might find on a web site into an email. However, recently this no longer works. When I paste, instead of the image, I get a little square, containing what looks like the outline of a computer & keyboard. This happens with both Seamonkey and Firefox/Thunderbird. I can paste an image into Thunderbird on Windows. Has there been a change recently that causes this problem? Hello, I need some hints around the rsync use. I'm very concerned by backup/archives. I already have viable archive system for important data (redundant) and clonezilla o my main disk. But all this needs manual work, and takes some time (max one hour), where the computer is either offline or not really usable. So it's done randomly at too long intervals in my feeling. I also have a very cheap unused online server with 2Tb data, to be related with the 500Gb size of my main disk. So I want to use this server as backup. This M.2 device I just bought turned out to be used instead of new as expected. So, I wanted to see what's on it. Booted normally to a /dev/sda filesystem, trying to mount -t vfat or -t auto just gives a generic error "wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock, blah blah". -t auto worked just fine for NTFS sdb3. What's the secret to examining an EFI System partition when the one used for booting is already on /boot/efi/? Hello guys. I'm trying to install OpenSuSE on an old Dell PowerEdge 1900 server with SAS1068 controller and 4 disks of 285GB each. The installation runs normally, however after the reboot, the operating system is not found (does not recognize the boot partition) At first I tried to create two mirror type arrays (2 disks per array). As it did not work, I then created two stripping arrays and lastly I tried to install it with no defined array, but none of the alternatives worked (no booting after OS installation). Hello, I'm new to the list and have just installed Leap 42.3 64bit with GNOME 3.20.2 on a Lenovo laptop. The laptop is intended for use in remote areas with low internet bandwidth. In order to reduce internet traffic as much as possible, I would like to prevent the system from checking for updates altogether when it's online in low-bandwidth areas. However, - I can't find the option to never check for updates in YaST2 > Online Update Configuration. - GNOME Software Updater configuration as described in Start-Up Guide, par. 9.4.3 Configuring the GNOME Software Updater... https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/startup/single-html/book.opensu… ...is not available on my system ("Software Settings" in the Settings app > All Settings isn't present.) [opensuse] Thunderbird: 'autocrypt' and 'openpgp' appearing in HEADER

Some may have noticed that over the past couple of weeks or so that the 'Normal' header[1] in _some_ posts has suddenly been displaying new entries called 'autocrypt' and 'openpgp' with the former containing many lines of alpha-numeric characters. See here: http://susepaste.org/48357201 Having the Header filled with these alpha-numeric characters is a PITA, but this can be easily remedied by doing a minor edit in the about:config file. To do this go to: Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Config Editor Do a search for 'autocrypt' and _delete_ 'autocrypt openpgp' in the 'Value' field. No need to restart Thunderbird. Hi list, I'm playing with VDR on my TW system. It is started via systemd, and is running as another user (vdr). So the program is not allowed to open a window on my desktop :( I can overcome this using xhost si:localuser:vdr So following the xhost manpage, I put this in /etc/X0.host: si:localuser:vdr local: the second line is for testing. Because if I start the machine and type xhost, what I get is access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect LOCAL: So the si entry is ignored :(( Why isn't that working? I tried both capital and normal si, no way. All other settings do work, just not the si: one. Does anyone know the proper way to get this setting done permanently? Hi, all -- I hate printers, but ... you just can't get away from them, and it would be helpful to be able to print from my laptop instead of needing to go and borrow another. Ugh. I tried the YaST "Add New Printer" config and I can talk to it but cannot find any drivers when I search for "photosmart". Does anyone have any pointers to the simplest way to set up this sucker? Note that this is a older multi-function inkjet that probably relies on the PC to do the composition work, so my laptop will likely need a driver that will lay out the page and then send the rendered finished version for printing. Oh for the simple days of a LaserJet III that handled whatever you threw at it! :-) Anyway, I'd love any tips. Is there any way of finding out what prevents a (supposedly idle) automount from expiring? [opensuse] enable 'ftp' on download servers?

Is it possible to enable ftp downloads on the distro servers? I was trying to be more finicky about what I downloaded short of writing a specialized script, and saw some might be done using wildcards ('*-xyz.rpm', etc), but it seems that only ftp supports wildcards due to it having a common looking display for listing files in a directory vs. http having no standard when it comes to displaying a directory. The alternative simplest way might be to download everything in the directory and throw files that don't match keep-patterns or keep those that do match them. Ideally, though, it would be preferable to avoid downloading anything not wanted/needed rather than filter after the fact. Trying to have a script that downloads only the files from relevant or wanted archs, that adapts to different types (binary, src, debug, update) for different distro types (static v. rolling), is more than a bit messy...ick. Anyway .. not a requirement, as for the dirs I want to use wildcards in are the ones most likely to benefit from a more intelligent download script -- but one that I don't have written right now when I was already needing to update some rpms with newer ones...erk... Has anyone ever used the "Export" and then "Import" functions in Yast's "Software Management" section? If so, did it work? Hello, I think I already asked for that, but I now can't find an answer: present libreoffice theme is black. For my eyes it's totally unreadable, I can't see white letters on black paper. I speak of the frame color, not icons of user text. This was not the case some (month?) ago... how can I find a white (or simply clear) theme on 42.3/plasma usual theme for kde is ok elsewhere?
