[opensuse] "no battery available" in Leap 42.2, question, laptop, plasma5 related

I had this case on a travel lately. I had 3 users open simultaneously and inadvertently I did detach the power plug. Now the user I was in (I found out after) claimed: no battery available, while the other two did indicate correctly "on battery" and the respective power left. I thought it was a bug, but I don't think so anymore. After a complete shutdown and restart all was O.K. the next day. Does anybody know which part of the desktop may have crashed and if in case it is possible to restart it manually (or by log out / in) in case it happens. Must be some program that only touches the specific userspace. Other users where not touched by this. Not a big deal, but I was left nearly without battery (needlessly) because I was not warned. Dear all, I have a question about security:/netfilter/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/noarch/xtables-geoip-2016.09-71.2.noarch.rpm In my firewall I examine all unexpected traffic, there for I end added lines for all existing countries, like: iptables -A CC -m geoip --src-cc AD -j LOG --log-prefix " CC=Andorra " iptables -A CC -m geoip --src-cc AD -j DROP I have likewise 250 lines, but still I've got some uncaught lines. Does that mean there are "other countries", or that there are subnets not defined within the package xtables-geoip-2016.09-71.2.noarch.rpm In twelve hours, I got 232 different IPv4 adresses, that xtables-geoip does not recognize. [opensuse] Badblock scanning of Terabyte drive

My desktop's 1T drive is approaching it's supposed EOL. I realise that time was, the bathtub curve meant that if a drive worked it probably would keep on working, but modern economics seems to mean that a component dies the day after its warranty expires. So I'm apprehensive. I see 2T and 3T drives no on sale for less than I paid for my 1T drive. Why I should consider them when I haven't filled my 1T drive I'm not clear. having a set of mirrored 1T makes more sense then a 2T on a single spindle. I'm using LVM so migrating LVs from oe drive to another is not a problem. HOWEVER .... What I am concerned about is initial reliability. My experience with new drives has never been good. It is one reason why I adopted LVM. The 1T drive I'm using is a replacement under warranty for a drive that threw an enormous amount of uncorrected bad blocks about a week into use. I still had the LVs on the older drive and had simply been mirroring. Upgrading from a 750G to a 1T meant that such problems showed up quickly. But a step from the 1T to a 3T might leave a lot of space never considered. Yes I know about the 'badblock' program. There are a few variants. But that isn't fast. I've used it on a 8G USB and it took a couple of days. OK that's USB not SATA speeds. But how long would it take to scan a 3T drive using the 'badblock' program? TOO-OO-OO-OO-OO long! A drives SMART capability should include some kind of scanning but I'm unclear as to how comprehensive it is. Can anyone fill me in on that? Googling I see a few suggested ideas but they don't seem to reassure me about this question of a 'new drive'. 'smartctl -h /dev/sda' just says "PASSED" which is nice but not detailed. 'smartctl --all /dev/sda' tells me a lot but doesn't seem to tell me what I'm looking for. I'm reluctant to try forcing a scan/test on my live drive. My experience has been the opposite: I've been using Windows since 3.1, Mac OS since X and KDE since 3.3 (IIRC) and I've always preferred KDE (3, then 4, now 5) as my default desktop, both at work and for personal use. I've tried Gnome and several other desktop environments on Linux, yet KDE suits me best. Regarding code and quality in general, dolphin, okular, gwenview, digikam, marble, konsole, kate, plasma, kwin, kwallet, filelight, okteta, ktorrent, in my opinion, rate higher than or at the same level as the best corresponding applications on other platforms. Functionality wise, I prefer amarok, too, but it is getting buggy and development has almost stalled. Some KDE applications that have proved buggy indeed are kontact, kmail, akonadi, k3b. I still use kontact, although it is quite buggy; the closest to an alternative for it is Outlook, which is unfortunately also buggy, slow and runs only on Windows. I would also expect XFS to do a good job, I just don't have any reason to experiment. For hosted email, I think we have some 500Gb for mail storage, each user has a quota of up to 5Gb. We use maildirs on JFS in other contexts too - email quarantine and archiving, both with a lot more storage. [opensuse] Cinnamon on Leap 42.2

Hi All, You may recall this lively, lengthy and informative discussion here in mid-January: "Re: [opensuse] Most stable openSUSE version for 64bit computer" https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-01/msg00854.html This post is sort of a continuation and 'fork' of that discussion. For far too many reasons to detail here, I have been unable to sufficiently tame KDE Plasma Desktop (on Tumbleweed or Leap 42.2) on my new laptop. This unfortunate realization prompted me to investigate alternative DEs for Leap 42.2. You may already be aware of the 'GeckoLinux' projects available here: https://geckolinux.github.io/ Of particular interest in my case are the Cinnamon 'flavors' of GeckoLinux. You may also be aware of Portal:Cinnamon: https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Cinnamon (As of this afternoon, btw, that page has apparently been visited over 88,000 times.) Over the weekend, I followed the detailed 'zypper' installation instructions on the Portal:Cinnamon page. Cinnamon on Leap 42.2 is running beautifully on my new laptop. Moreover -- after just a few extra hours spent fine-tuning a few things -- I have successfully and completely (100%) replicated the entire functionality of my now retired "production grade, highly tailored" 13.2 KDE4 laptop. Although I'm ecstatic, I'm also a little bit concerned. Does anyone know what the future holds for Portal:Cinnamon? I've e-mailed the apparent maintainer and not heard back (yet.) Alternatively, does anyone have any experience or thoughts to share regarding the GeckoLinux option ... the Cinnamon 'flavors' in particular?
