[opensuse] Realtek 8152 USB 4-port Ethernet

We have a new computer system with a RealTek USB-based Ethernet chip. There are 4 physical ports, each with PoE. Mysteriously, only one port seems to show up. No idea why. We have tried the original openSUSE r8152 driver, the one that came with the computer (2.00.0) and the latest from RealTek (2.08.0). It makes no difference. This is on an openSUSE 13.1 system (kernel 3.11.6-4-desktop). Which is what we want to run here. Mysteriously, lsusb only lists one MAC address: Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0bda:8152 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. CDC Ethernet: iMacAddress 3 00073240415B That is the MAC address we see. But there should be 3 more! What we do see is: 4: enp0s20u10: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 link/ether 00:07:32:40:41:5b brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet6 fe80::207:32ff:fe40:415b/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever The BIOS is minimal. We do not see anything that seems to control this. I'm not a fan of this type of Ethernet interface. It is part of a fanless computer specially designed to run in cars and trains... [opensuse] DVD Region Codes

Hi, I have successfully been able to use regionset to set my DVD / blu-ray drive to region 2 so that libdvdcss2 can de-crypt my DVDs. (Blu-ray discs work regardless of this). Originally the drive was set to 0 and would not play any of my region 1 or 2 dvds (played un-encrypted discs fine. Now the code is set, it plays region 2 (and un-encrypted discs) but not region 1 and regionset says I can only change it 3 times (2 left now). So my question is, how can I set the drive to be region free so I can play my DVDs from region 1 and other regions? I really do not want to have to rip all my discs or make duplicates with the protection removed because this would take a lot of time and is probably technically not legal. It must be possible seeing as when I used to have windows 7 on this PC (with the exact same drive) and used VLC with libdvdcss2 installed it played any disc even if it is not in the region the drive is set to, so it seems like windows or VLC or libdvdcss2 was just by-passing the region check. I have connected an IDE drive from an old DVD player which is region free and regionset could not detect any region (even 0) set on the drive. Maybe a clue? Has anyone managed to achieve this before? [opensuse] IEEE 1588 PTP Grandmaster Clock

Has anyone set up an openSUSE system to be a IEEE 1588 PTP Grandmaster Clock? A nice description of why one might want this can be found here: https://eu.ptgrey.com/1588 We have our in-vehicle systems set up to be Stratum 1 NTP servers (a high-end GPS with a serial port PPS is our Stratum 0 time source) for syncing time with cooperating devices. Unfortunately, all devices do not speak NTP. Some use PTP (IEEE 1588). There is an openSUSE package for this type of thing: https://software.opensuse.org/package/ptpd But details are sketchy. For some reason, I'm seeing no lvm devices, though when I do an "lvs", I see them: (have to type them right now, as setup didn't ask me for network settings). LV VG Attr LSize Pool Home Data Vwi---tz-- 512.00g HomePool HomePool Data twi---tz-- 750.00g Any ideas how to turn them on? (partly solved -- on for now, but kernel mods didn't autoload, so not sure if things are fixed). --- Issue#2: where / how do I change network settings? I can configure it manually w/ip(link,addr) and can ping my host system, but don't know where to add changes to make that permanent. --- Issue#3 -- I don't seem to be able to see any packages to install from the CD. I can enter yast and it gave errors trying to refresh the online packages, but no packages from the DVD. On boot, I see [FAILED] Failed to start LVM2 PV scan on device 8:4. See 'systemctl status lvm2-pvscan@8:4.service' for details. ... [..] A start job is running for dev-Data-Home.device (90 secs...) ----- How do I terminate a wait? Stupid timeout... a local device should never take 90 seconds. *sigh*... Oh.. the info shows that none of the modules are loaded. ... fixed that... hmmm...(this is one reason why I generally use my own kernel ended up having to recreate the LVM stuff... (or maybe I didn't, but couldn't get the volumes recognized until I did that and started 'udevd' (as udevd --daemon --debug -resolve-names=early), using the --debug option probably should have gone to a disk, way too much output to track when I did things... (like lvm operations & mkfs stuff). I'm running low on energy ... This is supposed to be the stable release? Oi! [opensuse] Can't update nfs

There are recommended updates for nfs-client & kernel server. However, the updates fail with "nothing provides librirpc.so.1()(64bit) needed by nfs-kernel-server-1.3.0-26.x" Anyone else having this problem? [opensuse] Leap 42.2 and Epson 1640SU scanner?

[opensuse] total system failure

This is a first for me. I am running a dual boot machine. Leap 42.2 and Windows 10 Pro, each on their own SSD. I have been using Leap 42.2 for a few months now and have had no issues with anything. Today I did an update and after the update everything seemed normal. I came back to the computer several hours later and everything had a serious time lag (30 seconds or more), such as opening apps, input from the keyboard, changing desktops, closing apps, etc. There were 14 updates but I did not pay much attention to what they were. I know one was Google Chrome but I cannot remember the rest. I decided to do a reboot to make sure there were no conflicts with the updates and libraries that might still be in ram. That is the last time I have been able to see my linux desktop. I can get to grub but every time I try to boot into Leap 42.2 I end up in emergency mode. The screen is totally blank prior to the emergency screen and my keyboard does not work in the emergency mode screen. I end up having to use the reset button to reboot out of the emergency mode screen. I have used both kernels both in default and recovery and every time end up in emergency mode. With the recovery kernels I do see output to the screen prior to emergency mode but I am not seeing anything that would suggest this failure. This is a basic install, I have done nothing fancy and update regularly when prompted. The only thing that is a bit different is my drive configuration. Besides a separate 500G SSD for Windows and Leap. There is a shared 4T drive that is formatted in NTFS. There is also a NAS Server. Users can access files on the NAS and shared drive from either Windows or Leap. I am typing this from Windows. In Windows I can access files on the NAS server and the shared drive so they are both up and working properly. I am totally stumped what could be wrong. [Please stop messaging me in private, the list is supposed to know this.TY.] it is not about some file not propagating, it is about the whole update mechanism coming to halt because the metadata blocks the whole zypper ref bytes/sec or even bits/sec trickling in and seemingly blocking and never completing the task. also the binaries of much larger stuff did propagate to mirrors. this update process is really bad if there cant be atomicity of some simple index file or softlink or similar which switches over the outdated metadata to the current metadata once all the mirrors have fetched it and meanwhile not hogging down and stalling everones update experience i am really annoyed by these eternal waits on zypper ref if it could still work and use the stuff already mirrored and already propagated in the mean time. also often there were reports on the infrastructure when the mirrorbrain and responsible scripts hosts or services were crashed or faulty that they needed manual intervention or versight and people only here reported them to the list or even the bug tracker before anyone took care of it. you never know what or if these things need attention or public display on this list or elsewhere before people might need to do something about them or if its a normal slow state until the mirrors fetch even these metadata so if you know of a better check or if anyone has some state display of these opensuse infrastructure if everything is considered to be okay or not, until then i might come forward and ask about them here on the list if i come across such situations. thank you. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner(a)opensuse.org
