[opensuse] Update server (download.opensuse.org) slow or crowded like mad - again

Once every few days or weeks, we see nonpropagating files especially in the updates directories that somehow only reside on the main primary source for downloads. <http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/?C=M;O=D> e.g. <http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/f150d00a0c4e5e10…> only lives on the one and only primary source, no mirrors fetched this and other files, although some others in this directory from todays date and current timestamp propagated just fine. download.opensuse.org or mirrorbrain or the whole deal seems to be often crowded or crashed or not very robust. Is this gonna improve somewhen in the foreseeable future? In the near future? In the past, I have seen lot of bugreports or bickering on lists or forums on these kind of issues with the download server. [opensuse] zypper dup Question

Running Leap 42.2 on my pi and out of curiosity I ran zypper dup to see what would show up. It looks like it wants to install a bunch of graphical applications and I'm not sure why, could someone explain this to me? This is a minimal install from the JeOS image. [opensuse] total system failure update

I was finally able to log into emergency mode today, keyboard could not type in password last night. I ran journalctl and discovered that the kernel is not able to mount any partitions. This is happening on the Samsung 850 EVO (system drive) and the HGST 4T (shared storage drive). On the system drive /home and swap mounts are failing, /home uses the XFS filesystem. On the shared storage drive the NTFS filesystem is used. I ran the manufacturers diagnostic tools from Windows and both drives are reporting no errors. Windows is able to mount the shared storage drive and I have full access to my files on this drive. Any idea what is going on and how to fix it? This system went from working great to total failure from one use to the next. I see a "remote control" section, but not a keyboard one. Ah, glancing at the text menu of the wiki there are more entries, one "basic controls". It is outdated, though, the default skin in version 17 has changed dramatically. No keyboard list, though. Just mention two keys, 'c' which I had already found out (context menu), and 'S', shutdown. [opensuse] ARG: Running Tumbleweed setup DVD - how setup disk as gpt (or run parted?)

Running openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20170414-Media.iso... First, I chose to "install", not upgrade. I got to an 'expert' paritioner, but it seems to want to limit partition sizes to 2TB or less and seems to be defaulting to using /dev/sd{a-c}+extended. That doesn't sound like gpt, but a standard PC-compat partition setup. I tried to start the text startup, but still ended up in GUI, which is driving me insane due to the physical mouse cursor not lining up with the virtual one. So... 1) how do I boot in text mode so I won't have to deal w/a broken mouse? (if I solve the above, I might be able to run parted from installer CD, but not sure....if not...) 2) how do I setup the partition table to use gpt? or, how do I run parted? Maybe I should boot the rescue disk and try initializing the disk w/gpt first? ....booting rescue.. why does sysd complain about missing groups: tty, kmem, video, audio, disk, cdrom then fail to generate issue-generator fail issue-generator network add enp0s17 -- no such file or directory fail issue-generator network dd enp0s8 -- no such file or directory --- seems sysd doesn't know how to start a rescue system -- though since a rescue system is supposed to start from a shell, how do I boot to a shell? adding init=/bin/sh (or init=/bin/bash) seems to be ignored. It starts a gui desktop. Why can't I get to a terminal from here? I try pressing ALT-F1 to get to the 1st console, but its ignored, and alt-f2 gets brings up an application finder. Also, no mouse cursor at all in this GUI. How do I run the GUI w/no mouse -- tab does some switching, but nothing to bring up a rescue menu. Why no ability to boot to a shell? [opensuse] Tumbleweed setup...Not enough room on 500GB HD? I don't think so...ignore?

I setup: /dev/sda1: boot@64MB /dev/sda2: swap (8G) /dev/sda3: / (root) 512GB /dev/sd4: LVM (1.5TB) /home-pool (thin pool; 750GB) /home (thin disk 500GB) --- Then it told me insufficent space for a server (text mode) setup. ??? Went to go back to partition table -- apparently went 1 too far... it then wiped all my changes. Back to drawing board... Um... so when it comes up and says not enough space, everyone knows that it full of doodoo....right? :~! [opensuse] pkcs11, Java, and browsers?

Hi Folks, This looks bad. We have a requirement to use smartcards to authenticate to a webvpn system. The webvpn product requires Java support to open a ssh terminal. Alas, this all stopped working when Chrome and Firefox dropped support for NPAPI. In other words, no Java now with Chrome and Firefox. It doesn't look like opera will ever support pkcs11, and I don't think Konqueror does either. Alternatives? Oracle's Java web site recommends using MS Windows or Apples. I'm truly loathe to do this, but we could run Windows in Virtualbox just to get Java compatibility. Tell me this isn't so! [opensuse] 2nd monitor "720p" resolution - 42.2 & KDE4

One thing I've noticed is I cannot configure a 2nd monitor connected to my laptop to 1366 x 768 resolution, to match the built in display. This means it's not possible to unify the displays, without significantly dropping resolution. On Windows, I can have both displays show the same content, regardless of whether the 2nd display is a 720p or 1080p. It just works. Extending the display works OK though, with the different screen resolution. Is there any way to fix this?
