Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] No sound in Minecraft

I've asked on the minecraft forums without a response so I'm trying here in case that it might be a SuSE configuration issue. I do not have sound in the game. This has been a problem for several versions nowCurently running 1.7.5. I've also tried the last 2 snapshots. I can play music fine and was able to play the sound files in .mineraft/assets/objects/* via Amarok. I have deleted the assets folder and had re-downloaded everything. I looked in the bug list and I found a few sound related issues, but they suggested that there was some sounds. The log only mentions minecraft:mob.witch.idle, but there are no sounds at all in game, but in options everything is set to 100%. I tried to force an older version in profile editor but still no sound going back to 1.4.2. I see a java Playback Stream in the mixer and volume is 100% there too. Any ideas? [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. [opensuse] running a program before shutdown

Hi everyone! I do have a small problem: I want to run unison before i log out of kde, so that my files are synchronized automatically. I created a .desktop file and placed it in /.kde4/shutdown/. The .desktop file is specified by the command: unison myprofile -batch I tried it, but it seems, that this doesn´t work, because nothing was synchronized after login in again. Although in the systemsettings in the category autostart, my .desktop is listed and set to logout. Any suggestions. Best Benjamin! ps.: I already tried it with a shell-scrpit, which i also placed in the shutdown folder, but this also didn´t work…

[opensuse] XFS filesystem total failure on return from hibernation.

XFS fails completely, lots of kernel messages. System has to be restarted, recovery is impossible otherwise. It seems to affect one partition only (?), the one that has my home, on xfs. I booted the 13.1 XFCE rescue image, tried to xfs-repair that one. It complained that there was a log, that I should attempt to mount it first. Mount hung. It is unkillable. Reboot of system hung. smartctl -a gives no hint of problem. The hard disk is new (190 hours). I run "xfs_repair -L" on that disk, which succeeds with no error report. I'm at the moment running the long SMART test on that disk. It will take 226 minutes. Hi Does anyone know why i always get "curl" errors using "zypper" or Yast to refresh/ update the repos? Its random as to which repos fails. see example below I don't ever recall this happening prior to opensuse 12. I have an obvious error in the menu of Evince: http://img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/evincebugqx3fjckpil.jpg Any pointers what that could be? Any changed icon directories in OpenSuSE 13.1 ? Mouse over of course works. On SuSE 12.1 evince was working without problems. As per the subject, IMHO this is the list: 1) BLUETOOTH doesn't works completely 2) Power Management "sucks" with laptops 3) Totem warnings the user to download plug-ins which are not necessary or which cannot get downloaded and installed I consider all the above as limitations in a modern O.S. [opensuse] LibreOffice User Interface does not see gtk theme - howto fix?

All, I got LO installed by default, but also installed OO to make sure there was continuity in the office templates between the 3x versions and the current 4x. To may my great chagrin, the UI colors of OO and LO are completely different: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/suse/oo_lo-ui_differences.jpg Obviously OO is picking up the gtk theme and LO isn't. [opensuse] Libreoffice NFS

I have tried opening several libreoffice documents today from my NFS share on my NAS and every file asks to open in read only. Copied to the local HDD, the file opens fine. I have tried turning off file locking inlibre office and it makes no difference. This was working a couple of days ago and the issue has appear on my opensuse 13.1 laptop and desktop and on a few ubuntu machines at work. [opensuse] Page break in office suites

Hi all, In every month I get a kind of form, an Excel sheet which should be filled and undersigned in the last row and then printed. The original document is created in MS Office 2010 AFAIK, but is saved in *.xls, not xlsx format. When I open it in LibreOffice, it looks just fine, but when it comes to printing, the last row, the undersign, slips to a new page. I was advised to use Kingsoft Office. This originally Chinese package was praised to the heavens in terms of MS compatibility and usability, so I gave it a try. Hmmm. My sheet fell apart, and while it recognized that it was edited with Arial Narrow font, the typography was simply ugly. The letters was in different distances from each other. I read a lot, including forums, so I met Softmakers Freeoffice. I installed it. The outlook is a bit vintage, but that should not be a problem. Opened my document, looked fine, but as for LO, the last row slipped to a new page ( the original document fits on a single A4 page). So is there a workaround? I would cling to LO, if possible. What is the reason that is still cannot render a not too complicated MS document correctly. What about Calligra suite (though it does not accept Okular's latest version, so I did not installed yet)? Any hints and opinions are welcome. [opensuse] Wayland?

I've seen 'libwayland' come up a few times recently when running 'zypper up'. What is the status of the Wayland project wrt openSuse? I'm thinking that it would be nice to have a graphics server that supported Qt or GTK directly rather than the deep layers of X. I'm not convince Wayland is that, but lets face it, X was a solution to a problem of the 1980s, long before Pcs, long before the powerful GPUs we have today, long before the powerful CPUs and their advanced instruction sets. -- Warning: Klein Bottle.
