[opensuse] I don't want an openSuSE supported MTA!

Can I ask the powers that be, why I am being somewhat forced to use an openSuSE supported MTA? I am running openSuSE 13.1 x64 and using YaST I cannot get it to NOT install an MTA. I am using the Apache James email server as my MTA and I want to use the mini-sendmail version of sendmail. So I go to YaST and tell it to uninstall Postfix. It happily does so, but then it installs Exim on me, and a different kernel. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) I DON'T want Exim so I tell YaST to uninstall Exim which it happily does, but then it installs MSMTP-MTA on me, and a different kernel. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) I DON'T want MSMTP-MTA so I tell YaST to uninstall MSMTP-MTA which it happily does, but then it installs BSD sendmail. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) I DON'T want BSD sendmail so I tell YaST to uninstall BSD sendmail which it happily does, but then it goes back and installs MSMTP-MTA on me. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) And now I am going in circles. I DON'T want one of these MTA's, why am I being forced into having to have one? They will conflict with using the Apache James email server and mini-sendmail which as I said, they are the ones I WANT to use! It also seems to me that if I don't want ANY MTA on my system I ought to have that option. I may not want it to ever send email to anyone! PERIOD! Is there a different route I should take to get these MTA's off my system and let whatever programs need one, to use the one I want to provide instead? I just saw Henne's post, as I wasn't part of this discussion, but wanted to comment on a few major sources of grief on this list. In fact, they can't even drown us out without our permission. It's not like real life where the loudest, most aggressive voice wins. Interrupts? Most email readers these days have some way of threading. You can choose to ignore any responses coming from someone other than your "chosen" speaking partner. In the extreme cases, you can filter out someone by subject and source -- or just source. Is this extremely rude? I find this is not only quite rude but highly insulting. ---- Um...let's see... having conversation at group event where everyone hears everything you say, and you want to shut people out of your conversation and make it private. That someone doesn't buy into you "owning the space" at a group event, you consider "rude". Doesn't that sound just a little bit odd? > > So how about we leave the personal-side be for a while? ---- It is rarely, or, it rarely _starts_ personally. It starts by someone taking it upon themselves to tell the other person that their behavior is unacceptable on this list. That's almost never going to end well when talking to a group of engineering-oriented techies who most often than not are used to getting things done by going and operating outside of the box (not within someone else's rules -- especially when those rules are brought up in the middle of trying to solve some technical issue. THAT's extremely annoying. It's minorly annoying when it happens to me, but I find it even more offensive when I have to suffer through someone else calling someone else out. ***IF*** by some rational, one feels they need to play vigilante, TAKE THE CORRECTION OFF LIST. I would totally agree, but if this list needs such verbally violent vigilante's to enforce list rules, then maybe it's time to rethink what rules are causing problems (as measured by number of vigilante actions) and regardless of their *argued* merit, lose them, so people won't have them to argue over. I can think of one other area that causes problems -- and I won't go into it in depth as this is already too long for many. But that is ignoring other people's input -- as it pertains to the OpenSuse software the are using. For many their interface is their *comfort food*. Mess with it, and one stirs a hornet's nest. Messing up people's personal systems for no good reason other than expediency is what Dictators do -- and those who maintain the ends justify the means. That the other source of upset. anyway... too long didn't read this...(just wrote this... ;-) )... Sorry for the late reply, but I didn't want to argue against the "spirit" of what you were saying, but did want to give some concrete problem issues that aren't really personal -- but are a result of the venue where these discussions takes place and its idiosyncrasies and those who take the vigilante role in enforcement. Anyone know the arrival estimate for Plasma 5 in the OpenSuse KDE repositories? (I'm picking your brains because I don't want to join another list, and wouldn't be sure which to join anyway). [opensuse] 13.1 - screen brightness stuck on high - unresponsive to fn keys - how to fix?

All, One new issue I have with 13.1 is my Toshiba laptop brightness is stuck on high (really high) and I cannot adjust it with the normal function keys. The normal method for increase/decrease is: fn + F6 - lower (8 steps) fn + F7 - raise (8 steps) What is strange is that this hardware brightness control has always worked, regardless of the OS (XP/DOS, openSuSE 11.0, 11.4, Archlinux) and regardless of the driver (radeon, radeonHD, etc..) Now it is just stuck. I can pop the 11.4 drive back in and it works fine. What could be causing this? Moreover, what could be the fix? -- David C. [opensuse] Web server configuration questions

I am reading from the official openSuse 13.1 reference guide, and hit at least one error. You see, I had installed Apache2 when I first installed OpenSuse 13.1; letting yast do the default configuration and start Apache. All was fine, except I had no SSL. Today, I edited the relevant conf files to enable SSL, and I generated my own CA, and created a server CRT; and put all the rquired key and certificate files in the right places. Now I want to TEST the configuration files as they are now, and reading from the official guide (but my main source of info was http://doc.opensuse.org/products/draft/SLES/SLES-admin_sd_draft/cha.apache2…) I see that I can do that using" rcapache2 configtest Alas, that fails with the message that /etc/init.d/apache2 does not exist. I looked, and it is right. There is no apache2 file in /etc/init.d. I don't know if that is a defect in the documentation or a bug in rcapache2, and I do not care. All I want is to know how I can check the new configuration before risking stopping and trying to restart apache. How do I do this? One other question. I have recently become aware of nginx, and have been reading that it performs much better that apache on limited hardware under heavy load. Can anyone confirm this? Further, will if work with the same document root and cgi-bin directories that apache uses, or does it want it's own? I would like to download the latest nginx (version 1.6 I believe), and install it, but do I have to stop apache before I do so? Ideally, I'd like to be able to switch back and forth between apache2 and nginx, so I can run tests to compare and contrast the two on the same machine. But can I do so without creating major headaches for myself? One of the things I have to check is the behaviour of each in handling optional checking of client side certificates. What I have to investigate is how to have optional checking of client side certificates, for hundreds of pages (and restricting their content if a client side certificate is not present), and making checking of client side certificates mandatory in order for the user to have access to a very small number of pages. I found where/how to make client certificates optional (for Apache2), but not how to make it mandatory for a given page. And I have yet to begin to investigate this for nginx. Any tips would be appreciated. It occurs to me to ask if anyone knows if there is an opensource application server that has the same relation to Tomcat that nginx has to Apache's httpd server (i.e. mature code that performs better on limited hardware under heavy load)? (and no, I am not interested in something imcomplete or only in alpha testing or even beta testing - and I do not have a budget for products that are not open source). [opensuse] wsjt-x for SuSE 13.1

Since I have just installed 13.1 this morning, I got the hamradio repository added and have installed a few ham related programs already. One program that I have is wsjt. I was hoping to find a related program called wsjt-x but I don't find that one. Has anyone used wsjt-x with SuSE 13.1? Is there a SuSE package or will I have to build from source?
