[opensuse] switching to 64 bit

Hello: I have purchased a new computer with more RAM (8 GB) and newer processor (AMD phenom II x6). So far all my computers used 32 bit linux (opensuse). Windows users say that windows requires 64 bit system to recognize and use memory that is larger than 4 GB (>3.xx). 1. It is necessary to switch 64 bit opensuse to use 8 GB RAM? My 32 bit system sees 8 GB RAM (in kinfocenter); kernel 2.6.31.14-0.8-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-16 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux. 2. If not necessary, what are the advantages of 64 bit? 3. What are the caveats? I guess there might be programs that can run on 32 bit system only. Can I run these in a 64 bit OS? Is there some compatibility program? I never installed and used a 64 bit system before. [opensuse] why i586 packages are shown is YAST in 64 bit system

Hello: The subject line says it. In YAST software manager not only the x86_64 but the i586 packages are listed as well. Is this normal? In 32 bit system only i586 packages are shown. Hi!, I'm using mod_auth_kerb v5.4 to authenticate users from AD, the issue is that some users where created with uppercase and others with lowercase, anybody knows how to force this to lowercase before it reaches the application?. [opensuse] 12.1 install: activated swap needed for installation

Hello: I started to install openSUSE 12.1 from a gnome live CD. The installation started as usual but when I tied to make the partitions and set mount points (in expert partitioning mode as I usually do) I could not change one of the swap mounting. The following message was shown when I tried to edit the given partition: "Device /dev/sda5 cannot be modified because it contains activated swap that is needed to run the installation." I had to abort installation as I don't want the installer to touch that hard disk at all. I find it very strange that the installer tries to modify any part of any disks without the permission of the user. 1. How can I prevent using that swap by the installer? 2. Hi Let's say the nfs server has crashed. I have a backup on another machine in the same Kerberos realm. What's the quickest way I can get the LAN back up? Anyone done it by substituting another box? Are we talking minutes, hours. . .? I'm not sure, but to have redundant kerberized nfs servers: is that what a cluster does? Hi I have just installed PA from balsam distro (which is based on openSUSE) on my ExoPC tablet: http://community.kde.org/Plasma/Active/Installation#Balsam_Professional_liv… I am very happy to see that I can have my favorite distro on a tablet and PA seems to be mature enough to be used on tablets. I am wondering when openSUSE will support PA ?
