Hello SuSE people. Running 1`2.1 with KDE3 Last night I did a zypper 'up' zypper downloaded TWO kernels. kernel-default and kernel-desktop. Now I;m havinf trouble with my nvidia drivers. [opensuse] How let users change their Samba password?

Hi, I installed 12.1 and let a user login by ssh. Now he should be able to change his password for Samba with smbpasswd. smbpasswd asks for the old and 2 times for a new pw and then comlaines that there cant be a server reached on 127.0.0.1 which is more or less expected since Samba's interface is eth0. With root the command "smbpasswd someusername" works as expected, though. The docu states that the loop-back 127.0.0.1 shouldn't be entered in the interface list. [opensuse] Different TERM for ssh and xterm?

Hi, can I have a different TERM setting for ssh and xterm? For ssh (putty) I need TERM = linux to have all the linedraw signes and F-keys working right. In local xterms I need TERM = xterm. Hello, Trying to install sphpblog on my own server (11.4, 64 bits) I have problem I never had before with the many php application I have on this server. [opensuse] Cautionary tale re encrypted HOME directory

When I installed 12.1 I encrypted (for the first time) my HOME directory. Last night, in anticipation of installing KDE 4.8, I did a backup of my /home to an external HDD. Then the thought occurred to me - which is as a result of a court case in USA where the judge ruled that the Fifth Amendment did not apply where the woman refused to divulge the passphrase to her encrypted system and she had to type in the passphrase to make the contents of the HDD available to the DoJ - is my encrypted data now readable on the external HDD? The answer is YES. I attached the external to another computer and am able to read all the files in that backup. FYI. BC -- The wise man does at once what a fool does finally. [opensuse] Now cannot print

Anybody else having the same problem or has heard of this happening? I just installed KDE4.8 to replace v4.7. I use Dolphin and it uses Kwrite to write/edit text files. I also have an HP 8450 Photosmart printer which happily printed anything in Kwrite - until now. The printer will print a perfect test print (using Yast) but just sits there like a stunned mullet when I go to print a Kwrite document - AND the HPLIP Service Status (sitting on my taskbar) shows that the darn thing has successfully printed the Kwrite file! Anybody throw some light on this sudden and unexpected behaviour by my HP printer, thanks? BC -- A three-year-old boy was examining his testicles while taking a bath. [opensuse] network configuration in post scripts?

Hello everyone, In version 11 (both opensuse and sles) I was configuring various system parameters in the <chroot-scripts> section, which had the filesystem mounted and network (dhcp) up. In 12 though, my changes (ifcfg, hostname, routes, udev) are overwritten by the last autoyast step after reboot. I've also tried post-scripts and init-scripts, same problem. Please, try to imagine what the OP wanted and how we can help to achieve that. Pay attention to the posting history of the involved persons, if possible. If you start to contemplate differentiating kernels according to their optimization for throughput aganist their latency, you're in the 0.05 promille percentile who knows how to choose their kernels in specific ways. The other 99.9995% (rounded, of course) wants to have less hassle and don't want to care about these fine differences. And that's especially valid for Bob who should be well known to you as a person with eye-sight disabilities. I know both Bob and you from postings to this list, so, you will have realized Bob's context by yourself, too, surely, don't you? Concerning your contribution to this thread, I doubt that the difference between stock kernel-desktop and stock kernel-default gains a lot. If you're really down to this fine-grained differences, you need to analyze your workload and configure the kernel's scheduler and IO subsystems accordingly; individually, as your measurements will point out. Just choosing a kernel is cargo-cult sysadmin work and not professional. It lacks data from profiling and past change/problem/incident management, which you, as a professional sysadmin, surely took before engaging in your kernel configuratiuon selection; like we do at our customer's sites. But this is way beyond the discussion of this thread here. >From your posting history I judge that you and I are in the same situation as having to plan data center rollouts for large amounts of systems where such individual performance analysis brings large gains. But we should never forget that usage of Linux on the desktop has not quite the same amount of need for optimization. It runs good there as it is. Let's stop to tell the problems of kernel selections when you have 100,000 systems to roll out; for almost all basic installations it just works. So, I would risk the notion of telling you: In the context of Bob's situtiation and his original question, your telling of kernel-choosing according to selection of throughput vs. latency is not helpful, not at all. [opensuse] Configuring Kmail accounts in KDE 4.7

I have recently installed OS 12.1 in a clean partition. in configuring Accounts in Kmail, I have copied the settings from my OS 11.4 installation, which works successfully. The result is that the POP account receives incoming messages as it should, except that the Password field is greyed out, so that I have to enter the receiving server's password manually at the beginning of each session (i.e., once in the morning). I cannot account for this, and would be grateful for any clue about why the Password field is not available to me. The SMTP account does not work, and I am unable to send messages through Kmail, Thunderbird works, and both were configured by copying from the v11.4 installation. An attempt to access the SMTP server yields an error message which contains the following: "...The server responded "sorry, your envelope sender domain must exist (#57.1)" I do not know what is meant by "envelope sender domain", as this terminology doesn't appear in any documentation that I have found. [opensuse] How to update PHP to 5.3.10?

Hi, I installed Opensuse 12.1 with PHP and added Suse's PHP repository. Currently PHP is version 5.3.8. Yesterday I searched for php-mbstring and clicked install. The installer refused because mbstring were version 5.3.10 and thus incompatible with my 5.3.8. Then I searched for php5 and yast found everything on v 5.3.8 even mbstring.
