[opensuse] Installing driver for AMD Radeon HD 6470M

hi, i have installed openSUSE 12.1. am looking for a working way to install the proprietary driver for AMD Radeon HD 6470m. currently, its working on intel sandybridge mobile graphics. it causes intense heating. all methods to install the driver so far have resulted in loss of GUI and have made me to remove the driver. for other distros like ubuntu, it made me reinstall the OS itself. till date, all methods i found on the net have failed. awaiting help Gaurav Sood -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] I/O-controller (Netmos) doesn't work after Update to opensuse 12.1

Hallo list, it seems really strange. I was glad upgrade from opensuse 11.3 to 12.1 worked fine. But after a reboot (without kernel change) my I/O card (1 parallel, 2 serial ports, NetMos) did not work anymore. Urgently needed for dialin and fax. I have a new 12.1 install. We have not migrated away from sysvinit yet. That is a work in progress. Anyway, I get a funny message when I try to run any 'insserv' command. Even the command without options: insserv: Service portmap is missed in the runlevels 5 to use service nfsserver So, I thought rpcbind (which provides portmap) was not enabled. I can see that there is no reference to in in the rc5.d directory. So, I tried to enable it: # insserv rpcbind insserv: warning: current start runlevel(s) (3) of script `rpcbind' overwrites defaults (3 5). insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (3) of script `rpcbind' overwrites defaults (3 5). insserv: warning: current start runlevel(s) (3) of script `rpcbind' overwrites defaults (3 5). insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (3) of script `rpcbind' overwrites defaults (3 5). insserv: Service portmap is missed in the runlevels 5 to use service nfsserver Still no reference to it in rc5.d. The sysvinit rpcbind script contains: # Default-Start: 3 5 which should place a reference in rc5.d. Since that does not happen, rpcbind is not available for nfsserver. Seems that the new systemd startup system has a different idea about when rpcbind needs to run. # chkconfig -f rpcbind rpcbind 3 Since no one else has reported this (checked Bugzilla and googled), I am guessing my system is confused. As a start, what do people successfully running 'nfsserver' get for the 'chkconfig -f rpcbind' command? More than just '3', I would imagine. Where is this defined for the new systemd startup? My computer is a ThinkCenter M51 tower. I have installed suse 12.1 on my 2nd hd which is a SATA drive, sda8. Grub is installed in the MBR on my 1st PATA drive, hda6. The reason I want to boot from the 2nd drive is that I plan to purchase a new ThinkCenter M91 tower with 2 SATA hd's. The new tower comes with windows 7 and I don't want to mess up the new comp and install grub in the MBR. This may invalidate the warentee. I will install suse12.1 on the 2nd hd in the new tower, using the old tower as a test. [opensuse] How to recover from kernel panic ?

Hi, last night I did an online-update of my OpenSuse 11.4. Now it runs into kernel panic so I can't get the system up anymore. The failover entry of grub doesn't help either. It's a rather unspectacular AMD 5200 that worked w/o issues until now. Hello: I am searching for a program with graphical interface to open unix mailbox files directly, for example mailbox files archived on CDs. Mutt has such an option, mutt -f mailboxfile opens the mailbox file, list the e-mails in the file, and e-mails in the list can be selected and read. Is there something similar with a graphical interface? I tried thunderbird with -file option but it did not open the mailbox file.
