Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. Now I have a bootable kernel I have worked though matters with 11.4 All the personal config came though intact :-) A lot of the system config has been altered and I'm not sure if that is just 11.3/11.4 differences or what. These are the problems I see now 1. KDM does not work. The greeter fails. Please fix your file. 3. Latency on menubar Just about every application, thunderbird & firefox in particular, but all the KDE applications as well, have a delay when top menubar items are clicked. I am used to this on LiveCD where the system has to drag in the relevant stuff from the CD but not on a real system. The KDE applications seem to cache items, the GTK applications don't seem to. 4. No sound. Sound has stopped working. Testing with LiveCD tells me its not a hardware problem The mixer icon doesn't appear in the system tray on starting KDE4 and when it is started everything is set to zero. Even then sound isn't working. The system is desktop v11.3, KDE v4.4 Because of the behavior, I do not see how I could approach diagnosis, even if I had a clue what to do. Sometime, wiggling the mouse cursor a bit makes the mouse responsive for a few seconds. When that doesn't work, sometimes letting it sit for a half hour or so frees it. The client is on a v11.4 laptop. I have two main boxes running, 11.2 which I replaced and relegated to server status for email and http, and 11.4 as main box. I ssh into the 11.2 box to read mail and administer ... I can access 11.2 from 11.4 and my wife's win7 (cygwin w/X and/or putty) box via ssh -X w/o any problem. Can run X apps w/o a problem. But with identical /etc/ssh/ssh{d}_config files I cannot forward X from 11.4 to the win7 box. [opensuse] Ontological Relevance

We've argued about Akonadi/Nepomuk/Strigi a few times. I have friend who was loudly about "Ontological Systems" and claim that this represents one, but I have my doubts. I regularly kill off the akonadi process tree after booting. I'd like to 'zypper remove' it, but it seems to bound in to other things. But I use Thunderbird and Firefox and Lightening so the PIM side of it is no use to me. I use thunderbird via an IMAP link to my mail hub on a separate machine. I have no use for KDE PIM and don't foresee every having any. The closest use I can see is my directory of PDFs. I save interesting web pages as PDFs (firefox is nice about that) Right now I use mindmaps with short descriptions and links to navigate that. A Wiki might be nicer but I'd still want graphical support. But I have an ordered filing system and I remember where I put stuff! Its just that with so much of it the question arises: which has the most relevant content? I've seen many mention that Kfind (or find or grep-R) does a better job (though not for PDFs) and that is so for me for everything else. I've seen mention that the KDE development is drifting from user needs. I'm not sure it is; what I do and what I see in other parts of the system, is that things are getting too heavily linked. The architecture is bound rather than pluggable. Many packages drag in other packages that you don't want, aren't going to use, even when the low level code bindings aren't there. I realise that the semantic desktop is only a small part of KDE. I like the rest: plasma, the multitudes of improvements and new features made to the various individual applications. I like being able to show multiple folders on my desktop, and I like the changes to the widget framework. Is there no way I can decouple this? Why do I have to have all this stuff I'm not going to use? What has happened to my ability to pick and choose? I wonder if this behaviour is a kind of security bug or something like that. In the LOCAL MACHINE (openSUSE 11.4) 1. ~> ssh remote_user@remote_host (password) 2. remote_user@remote_host:/> sudo ls / (root password) 3. remote_user@remote_host:/> exit Then, in the REMOTE MACHINE (also openSUSE 11.4): 4. open a new (gnome) terminal 5. ~> sudo ls / _(The sudo command in the remote machine doesn't ask for root password)_ bin boot dev etc home lib ... I think this is a security issue. An unprivileged user that knows that the system is maintained remotely using ssh and, perhaps, sudo, could keep attempting to use sudo until they gets it. PS. Hello, im really helpless how to fix a printing bug in openSuSE 11.4. I wrote an email to this mailing list, by the beginning of last week, but sadly nobody answered. While waiting for answers I was filling the bug to KDE bugzilla, but they told me, that the printing dialog comes from QT, so wrote to their bugtracker: http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-19233 I'm wondering, that nobody else has this problem. We can't print to an additional paper tray, if the tray 1 (manual) is also filled. In the days of kprinter, everything worked. There must be something wrong in the printer command sent to cups/printer. My problem is, that I have 60 desktops, and nobody can print from KDE directly to A4 default paper (Tray 3). Does anyone of you know an alternative to Format Factory which is available under Linux? The program should especially be able to cope with .wav, .mp3, .mp4, ... Hello list readers: According to man zypper: -p, --priority <positive-integer> Set priority of the repository. Priority of 1 is the highest, the higher the number the lower the priority. Default prior- ity is 99. Packages from repositories with higher priority will be preferred even in case there is a higher installable version available in the repository with a lower priority. But in yast software manager when I click update for a package the selected repo has the highest number (ie the lowest priority according to the above.) Is this a bug or is it on purpose (that the gui interprets priority in the opposite manner)? [opensuse] dbus on OS 11.4

After a few days running I'm seeing dbus taking 95% + cpu resources. When this occurs, launching programs won't open, but running ones work somewhat but slow. Has anyone else seen this? This happens on 2 different boxes, both with OS 11.4 64 bit installed, KDE default. This seems to happen sooner with Firefox left open, but it also happens with no programs running other than system startup. Thanks for any heads up. [opensuse] Wants root password to reset brightness upon resume?

Lately my 11.4/kde 4.6.3 machine will pop up a request for root's password when I wake it from suspend to ram. Often when I'm finished with the laptop, I will simply close the lid because suspend to ram is set up and works very well. Often I will close the lid when the screen is already dark, because powersave has kicked in due to sitting there unused for a while, and the powersave profile says to dim the screen. Then when I resume the machine by simply opening the lid again, it will be rather dim, at some point in the process it will ask for root's password to adjust brightness. Since I have keyboard key combinations for brightness, I simply ignore this and brighten it up manually and the message usually goes away. [opensuse] Using a USB-to-VGA (displaylink) adapter with 11.4

Howdy folks, I'm having trouble getting this adapter <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038P1TP4> set up properly. THe kernel (2.6.38.6-29-desktop, tumbleweedin' here) properly recognizes the device but I cannot quite figure out how to properly configure X.org to use it. I'm a heavy user of xrandr since I regularly use an external monitor with my laptop, and it doesn't show up in the `xrandr -q` output either. [opensuse] Update on LiveUSB 11.4 killed the Network

I have been using and promoting openSUSE 11.4 on LiveUSB. Last week I was updating the USB drive when the system rebooted the network was dead, I did had the time to re-try the operation installing updates one at a time to see what really killed the network. Maybe the kernel update, maybe some update on KDE. This happened both in 32 and 64 bits, does anybody had a similar problem on a 11.4 box (not necessarly a USB drive problem I think)? [opensuse] WLAN on Thinkpad T61 (with PRO/Wireless 4965 AG) stopped working after upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4

Hi all. After upgrading from openSUSE 11.3 to openSUSE 11.4, I cannot turn on any wireless connection. For example in KDE, the element in the NetworkManager is always ghosted.
