[opensuse] Ontological Relevance

We've argued about Akonadi/Nepomuk/Strigi a few times. I have friend who was loudly about "Ontological Systems" and claim that this represents one, but I have my doubts. I regularly kill off the akonadi process tree after booting. I'd like to 'zypper remove' it, but it seems to bound in to other things. But I use Thunderbird and Firefox and Lightening so the PIM side of it is no use to me. I use thunderbird via an IMAP link to my mail hub on a separate machine. I have no use for KDE PIM and don't foresee every having any. The closest use I can see is my directory of PDFs. I save interesting web pages as PDFs (firefox is nice about that) Right now I use mindmaps with short descriptions and links to navigate that. A Wiki might be nicer but I'd still want graphical support. But I have an ordered filing system and I remember where I put stuff! Its just that with so much of it the question arises: which has the most relevant content? I've seen many mention that Kfind (or find or grep-R) does a better job (though not for PDFs) and that is so for me for everything else. I've seen mention that the KDE development is drifting from user needs. I'm not sure it is; what I do and what I see in other parts of the system, is that things are getting too heavily linked. The architecture is bound rather than pluggable. Many packages drag in other packages that you don't want, aren't going to use, even when the low level code bindings aren't there. I realise that the semantic desktop is only a small part of KDE. I like the rest: plasma, the multitudes of improvements and new features made to the various individual applications. I like being able to show multiple folders on my desktop, and I like the changes to the widget framework. Is there no way I can decouple this? Why do I have to have all this stuff I'm not going to use? What has happened to my ability to pick and choose? {ATTENTION} Please pass this a long to your friends that this might effect/ Sorry for the cross post but I want to make sure everyone knows that we will be updating the Facebook following openSUSE Group. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=762429462#!/group.php?gid=2256834487 Once we update to the new group format, all currently a member will need to rejoin. We currently have over 5,500 members, and there is no away I can re-add all. I want to make sure all know, that the group, isn't going away, but is being upgrade to the new format. This was not our choice, Facebook is archive all the old groups and forcing us to the new format. . While I know many may not be a member of Facebooks or this group. [opensuse] Risky ssh + sudo behaviour?

I wonder if this behaviour is a kind of security bug or something like that. In the LOCAL MACHINE (openSUSE 11.4) 1. ~> ssh remote_user@remote_host (password) 2. remote_user@remote_host:/> sudo ls / (root password) 3. remote_user@remote_host:/> exit Then, in the REMOTE MACHINE (also openSUSE 11.4): 4. open a new (gnome) terminal 5. ~> sudo ls / _(The sudo command in the remote machine doesn't ask for root password)_ bin boot dev etc home lib ... I think this is a security issue. An unprivileged user that knows that the system is maintained remotely using ssh and, perhaps, sudo, could keep attempting to use sudo until they gets it. PS. [opensuse] openSuSE 11.4 - Printing bug

Hello, im really helpless how to fix a printing bug in openSuSE 11.4. I wrote an email to this mailing list, by the beginning of last week, but sadly nobody answered. While waiting for answers I was filling the bug to KDE bugzilla, but they told me, that the printing dialog comes from QT, so wrote to their bugtracker: http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-19233 I'm wondering, that nobody else has this problem. We can't print to an additional paper tray, if the tray 1 (manual) is also filled. In the days of kprinter, everything worked. There must be something wrong in the printer command sent to cups/printer. My problem is, that I have 60 desktops, and nobody can print from KDE directly to A4 default paper (Tray 3). Hey guys, I was used to manage different audio and video formats on my older Windows PC using Format Factory. This worked out quite well in high quality. Does anyone of you know an alternative to Format Factory which is available under Linux? The program should especially be able to cope with .wav, .mp3, .mp4, ... Hello list readers: According to man zypper: -p, --priority <positive-integer> Set priority of the repository. Priority of 1 is the highest, the higher the number the lower the priority. Default prior- ity is 99. Packages from repositories with higher priority will be preferred even in case there is a higher installable version available in the repository with a lower priority. But in yast software manager when I click update for a package the selected repo has the highest number (ie the lowest priority according to the above.) Is this a bug or is it on purpose (that the gui interprets priority in the opposite manner)? [opensuse] dbus on OS 11.4

After a few days running I'm seeing dbus taking 95% + cpu resources. When this occurs, launching programs won't open, but running ones work somewhat but slow. Has anyone else seen this? This happens on 2 different boxes, both with OS 11.4 64 bit installed, KDE default. This seems to happen sooner with Firefox left open, but it also happens with no programs running other than system startup. Thanks for any heads up.
