[opensuse] Skype wit video

In order to get Skype started with a functioning video I have to use: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype I give this command in a konsole and it works. I would like to intergrate it in my Skype button. How could I do that? [opensuse] desktop comes up, xen doesn't

Still working with my wife's new computer. I downloaded and installed the nvidia drivers a couple of days ago (it has a geforce 210 video card). Now, the desktop system (opensuse 11.3, kept up to date with zypper) boots right up into kde, but the xen system doesn't. It complains that it can't find module nvidia. [opensuse] [OT] a regular expression book for text worker?

I am trying to help a writer friend (or more preciously text worker, like copy-editing) to manage regular expression in editing work. This post try to get recommendation what book might do the work. I believe most of the knowledge he needs can be explained in a booklet of less than 64 pages with graphical illustration. A search on local book store and online book-store disappointed me a lot. There are only 3 types of regular expression book on the market: 1. The books that consider regular expression a science or an engineering method. Such books would emphasize precision over intuitiveness, prefer abstraction over examples. Typically, they would assume readers know what an Operating System is, what is a "string terminator" and so like. Such book I cannot give to my friends as training material as would triple my training hours compare to if I don't use a book at all. I have to explain a whole lot of concepts before getting him on the track, and he would spend so much energy to learn the concepts (what is an OS? NFA? DEA?) that he may forgot what I try to teach (like how to join lines with RE). 2. The books that consider regular expression a tool for programmers. Such book starts in the first page telling the difference of Perl regular expression, .NET and Java, and use program code to illustrate solutions. They assume you must programmed with a language. 3. VIM books and Emacs books with a focus on regular expression while regular expression is available in almost every editor except Microsoft products. Such books don't fit thanks to their assumption that the users are used to work with VIM/Emacs. The fact is even office workers who uses OpenOffice may well find good uses of regular expression. I think what my "student" need is simple knowledge of: * A short tutorial introducing features one by one, with examples. Better demonstrated with a most simple editor in order to reach most audience. * A reference with short examples. * A case book or scenario book with about 20 scenarios. Typical are: o To join lines that are previously line-wrapped, like that was done by fold(1). o To remove HTML tags. o To get a list of abbreviated terms. o To prettify a price table. o To match delimited text like CSV. o Stripping unwanted white spaces. o Insert formfeed at right places. o match URLs and emails. o ... The perfect book would assume the user only have two things with them: a problem and a text editor. I thankfully appreciate any hint on how to find a good book for the purpose but if your reply is of one of these topics please kindly remain in-top by saying nothing (sorry!): * Question the need of using regular expression when user is actually using "low level" products like OpenOffice. * Emphasize the necessarily of engineering background or engineer's abstracting ability as basis of using regular expression, so that to justify the need of learning abstract concepts (NEA, DFA, concept of "string" ...). * Recommend text workers to learn programming. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] KDE repository problem?

I had problems with the KDE 4.5.2 download the last few days, my automatic update downloading before kdelibs and others were completed, but I think NOW I have it all. I think. However, as I was downloading I got to the point where my pull-down menus went funny. I thought at first that this was a result of not having the kdelibs right. Now, when I think I have a complete download, I still have that problem. What happens is that the pulldown doesn't display the list, its either blank or in some cases just a mass of confusing pixelation Now to be fair, this might not be KDE at all, it might be X. [opensuse] Has dual-boot changed?

So I bought this fancy new motherboard for my wife's machine, She uses Windows xp because she isn't very adept at computers and doesn't want to have to deal with two different systems (the school system uses xp). When I tried to find her copy of xp, I couldn't, so I went ahead and installed 11.3. Later, I found the installation disks and installed xp, expecting to do as I had before, booting into the 11.3 install disks. Tried, failed. I was expecting a vaguely remembered option to "repair installed system", or some such, which isn't on either the net install disk or the complete iso. I'd rather not have to reinstall suse, even if I could be sure that would solve all my problems. So, googling "suse xp dual boot", I find several references to such a feature on ubuntu and some others, but I also hit a scary comment that substituting the xp bootloader is risky, and it's better to modify it to give the option to boot linux (bkpavan.wordpress.com, apcmag.com, www.wellho.net) It's been some months, but I set my laptop up with dual-boot using what really looks like the suse grub bootloader. Has something changed, or am I worrying too much, or...? I found several references to dual-boot on the wiki, but they're all about using or setting up something else after the dual-boot is set up. Where is this "rescue" system referred to in the ubuntu web, and that I clearly remember having before? And is it really so dangerous to simply substitute the xp bootloder with grub? [opensuse] Sound doesn't work after user switch

OpenSuse 11.3 KDE 4.5.1 HDA Intel VT1708S After I switch to another user (also KDE) both doesn't have sound. My player still doesn't pay attention to it and plays music, but I hear nothing. I have to restart alsasound to make it work again. Any suggestions? [opensuse] Changed provider - Yast DNS problems

Hi! I have today changed Internet provider and found that Internet configuration through Yast does not work as expected on 11.3. Previously I had PPPoE connection, now I have a direct connection to Internet. The servicemen who set up the connection obviously saw Linux for the first time so could not help. It seemed that the IP configuration went well but the DNS servers did not work. Any changes in Yast did not affect the problem. After the servicemen left I succeeded to set up the network by manually deleting file resolv.conf and renaming resolv.conf.netconfig to resolv.conf. The same problem I encountered this summer when my provider moved me from PPTP VPN to PPPoE. KDE is v4.4.4. When a USB stick or an optical disk is inserted, Devce Notifier pops up to tell me that this has happened, and then pops down again. As far as I can see, nothing else happens: Nowhere am I asked what I want to do with the thing (eg, mount, ignore, or anything else), nor do I see any difference in the Konqueror file browser. indicating the presence of a new device. I assume that I just don't know where to look, although I spent a bit of time yesterday searching. opensuse 11.3 I do man gpg2 and it advises I use gpg for embedded applications which is what I want. [opensuse] Automatic updates

For the first few days after I installed v11.3, there were momentary popup notifications that new updates were ready. Unlike the drill under kde3, I was not asked to confirm. I have no way to know whether the updates were executed or not, but I doubt it. I am sure (or rather, I hope) that the system s not intentionally keeping me n the dark, so presumably something is wrong. Does this sound like I omitted something I was supposed to do? [opensuse] Ctl+Alt+F2

From time to time while I am in KDE (with various things running) I accidentally hit Ctl+Alt+F2 (stems from confusion from the difference between Gnome and KDE for switching desktops). which brings up a character login. What's the easiest way to get back to KDE? I'm hoping there's something better than logging in at the character prompt, and shutting down the system and starting over. [opensuse] Kde won't accept my password

I was trying to get my cd and dvd drive to work, tried a new cable as set up showed not using 80 connector cable. Changed cable,moved drive, new cable not good, drives did not appear, put back old cable that at least gave an error accept my password then it had trouble starting but finally got to kde login, now won't accept my password. What can I do about that? Hello all, After the installation of OpenSuSE 11.3 64Bit i noticed a strange problem with an HP DL380G6. The system, after Grub, when says "activating udev", freezes completely, with a black screen. To make it work i have got to boot into Safe Mode, and add the parameter "nomodeset". Now my kernel line in grub is this: title Desktop -- openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.3 root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/cciss-3600508b1001037383941424344450300-part1 nomodeset vga=0x317 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop And the system boots normally. But, what is that parameter? I have searched for it but found poor information. And, that parameter can have some negative effects for the stability of the system? [opensuse] multimedia repository chaos

I spent a miserable few hours over the weekend trying to get an 11.2 box play multimedia. After I realized why I couldn't play anything I discovered <http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_formats/11.2> and clicked on the "codecs-gnome.ymp" link. After that some things started working but others didn't, so I looked at the troubleshooting section. I removed totem with no problem but when I asked it to remove gstreamer it removed lots of things including openoffice and evolution for example before I aborted it. I reenabled the other repositories and appear to have successfully reinstalled the things it deleted but of course my multimedia still doesn't work. When I have just packman and libdvdcss enabled, I can see that there are upgrades available for gstreamer but when I try to apply them, many won't because of broken dependencies on packages that I guess are in the standard repositories. But if I reenable the standard repositories, it no longer offers me the upgrades. Is there some way to tell YaST to do the upgrades? Thanks, Dave PS I wanted to add a note to the troubleshooting section of <http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_formats/11.2> warning about the possibility of damaging your system by following those instructions. But apparently I can't do that without creating yet another online persona - my novell persona soesn't seem to be good enough for example. Is there some way around that? I have a RealVNC machine that I can connect to via vncviewer (TightVNC Viewer version 1.3.9) but I can't connect to the same machine with KRDC. Version 4.5.1 (KDE 4.5.1) I have KRDC set with the vnc plugin turned on. Lauched from the command line KRDC says: krdc(13324)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "remote_desktop_dockwidget" with KXMLGUIFactory! krdc(13324): couldn't create slave: "Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'krdc '%u''. It does launch, but never connects. The remote target never shows an inbound connection attempt. I want to run KMyMoney on a remote computer. The files reside on a laptop, and I want to be able to edit them from my desktop. Both are running Opensuse 11.2, and both are on the same local network; both have KMyMoney installed. What is the easiest way of doing this? And do I need to worry about overwriting changes if KMyMoney is open on both machines at the same time? I hope this is an easy answer question. [opensuse] Problems downloading 11.3

Hello SuSE people I have been trying to download theopenSuse 11.3 iso for three days and every time it stops prematurely. I successively tried the SuSE repository, then a french one (much slower) and I am stuck at my secont attempt from http://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/openSUSE-1… -DVD-i586.iso (de, prio 130) Which appears to be the fastest : 14 hours 27' only ! ! in my case. The iso should be 4 Go and I have only 3.7 Go ( 3,961,190,992 Bytes exactly). It is y best success until now, but I suppose it is not complete and cannot be used as is. I am using Firefox 3.6.10 with OpenSuse 11.2. Is there a way of completing the unfinished download ? It would be the best solution considering the time it takes. Or should I download it with another browser such as Konqueror ? Or is there a better repository available from France ? All, I see there is now a repo just for kde 4.5 on OS 11.3 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/45/openSUSE_11.3/ I'm intriguied, but I also read that upgrading can cause problems if you don't also update to a new version of dbus. And that new version of dbus was not in OBS as of a couple weeks ago. Any update on that? I'd like to ask if anyone has run into the following issues using openSUSE 11.3, Vmware 7.1.x, kde 4.4 or kde 4.5 When running openSUSE 11.3 with kde 4.4 as a Virtual Machine, and with openSUSE 11.3 as host, the virtual machine experience numerous lock ups and freezes. Examples of behaviors include mouse stops responding to left clicks, virtual machine will completly stop responding and after several minutes will respond again. The same virtual maching (openSUSE 11.3 with kde 4.4) is run on a with Windows 7 as the host, at it works just fine ? The virtual guest has the opensource vmtools installed, as installed by openSUSE when the virtual machine was installed. Any ideas ??????????????????????? I've seached / google etc, found no hits on this one. I am implementing a one-click install, and have a question: it is the case that the packages in a one-click install get reinstalled even if they are already installed? I have an up-to-date system, and added an existing rpm to a YMP spec, and the rpm was re-installed. I searched on opensuse.org for one-click, and for ymp, and got hits for actual one-clicks installs that exist. But not for the spec for the file. Hi to all, Just a segnalation of 3 bugs i have encountered today with an upgrade of OpenSuSE from 11.0 to 11.3 (32 bit version). - Booting with an USB DVD Rom with an USB keyboard attached produces a system hang at boot (it freezes in bootsplash) - After upgrade, the package postfix-mysql is not anymore present, reinstalled by hand it works. - dbd_module into apache2 and libapr-util1-dbd-mysql not anymore present after update. Reinstalled by hand it works. Hi All, I was just wondering, does no one miss the lack of a shorewall package in a opensuse repo? I can install shorewall but getting the rpm from shorewall.net but ideally it would be great to have it packaged in a opensuse repo. I'm surprised because it is the default firewall on mandriva(and works really well there), and IMHO I find it to be a great firewall program, and better than the default opensuse firewall. Looking to add some new drives and can't seem to find any info about whether my current 11.0 install will properly format the newer advanced format drives. Or read them if I format them with a newer version. Can't find any definate info. And, yes, I know 11.0 is EOL. However, I'm not in a hurry to replace it if I don't have to. [opensuse] wiki software

I use wikis as a kind of personal notebook to provide an index and reference to all my other information. So they're quite important to me. I originally started with kwiki and then moved to mediawiki. I recently moved to opensuse 11.2 and discovered that mediawiki was no longer provided. I'm reluctant to install and maintain from upstream because of the extra hassle. This is just a very important tool to me and I need reliable, low-maintenance tools. I found a copy of mediawiki in home:Michael_Knight/openSUSE_11.2 so I installed that and it appeared to work, until I tried to log in, when I got PHP errors. It looks like they are well-known and fixed in later versions of mediawiki. So that build should be removed from the repository, IMHO. That leaves me with the problem of what to do now. I just used webpin to see what the alternatives are and discovered that there are apparently no wiki systems supported on opensuse! Just add-ons for various systems. This seems like a major functional omission so I'm hoping somebody can tell me that I've missed something. I also know that the opensuse.org wiki is built on mediawiki, so I'm a bit surprised that there isn't a build of the version that is used. I notice that Synaptic shows that Ubuntu supports several wiki systems. I'm hoping to discover that opensuse supports at least one. [opensuse] 'localhost' instead of machine name after reboot

My PC running opensuse 11.1 locked up and I had to hard reset. Upon restart when I open a terminal window my prompt looks like: user-name@localhost:~> instead of: user-name@machine-name:~> I know some updates recently installed, so not sure if that had anything to do with it. My networking is using network-manager. I tried modifying my hosts file, which is where my computer name was set before. It had a line like: 127.0.0.2 machine-name.mydomain.com machine-name Now when I restart, this automatically gets change to: 127.0.0.2 localhost.localdomain localhost The biggest issue is that I had an openoffice document started and would like to recover it. When I try to start calc, it sees the change in the environment and want to ignore the one I want to recover. Any ideas how I can reset my machine name like it was before? Made some changes in fstab and grub, got rid of some of those extraneous files and rebooted intending to follow some more of your suggestions. Now the darn thing loads to a prompt and does not accept the root bor the user passwords. Oh well I guess it is time for a reinstall. [opensuse] Frequent hangs in 11.3 + 4.5 continue

There was some discussion in the past few weeks about frequent freezes of the mouse and keyboard. See thread "This guy _really_ likes kde 4.5". I have tried various changes of kernel, and am now back on 2.6.34.7-0.3. I have also upgraded dbus to 1.4, but the problems continue unchanged. If anyone else who experienced the same problems found a solution, I would be grateful for a pointer. I see a new item in /var/log/messages on openSUSE 11.2: Oct 1 09:49:09 acme kernel: [2605651.384950] rst2vvxml[8055]: segfault at 1d221 ip b7495a5a sp bfddb380 error 6 in libtprofile.so.18.00[b7494000+4000] I don't think this was there before. But that is not question. In this case, a local program has caused a segmentation violation and died. During development, this sort of thing does indeed happen. Knowing the library it was in when this happened is quite a nice thing. My question is: where is the mechanism that controls if I see application program failures like this? And, does anyone know if it is possible to have a backtrace as well? I have added backtrace() in my signal handler for these failures in some apps. But a system-wide enabling would be very useful! It seems that the kernel is reporting the error. So I guess, if fine control exists, it would be a kernel setting.
