I've got a number of Windows XP boxes that want X11 access to a Suse host.
I've performed the following steps:
Install vnc on Suse
create /etc/xinetd.d/Xvnc containing:
Service Xvnc
{
type = UNLISTED
disable = no
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/local/bin/Xvnc
server_args = -inetd :10 -query localhost -once -geometry
1024x768 -depth 16
port = 5901
}
under /etc/sysconfig/displaymanger, I have the following set:
DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes"
DISPLAYMANAGER_START_XSERVER=yes
DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN=yes
Firewall is off
Xaccess allows broadcast, and to any host
kdmrc has the xdmcp stanza enable=true and port=177
restart xinetd and X11 but can't remotely connect.
Get Connection refused.
Same results with locally running vncviewer localhost:10
Sadly, same message is mimicked in syslog; nothing else.
What steps am I missing?
TIA

I'm trying to get Amarok 1.4 to use the MySQL database, and I think I've
messed things up. I'm using KDE 3.5.10 running on opensuse 11.1.
Under MySQL Configuration, I've got
Hostname: localhost
Port: 3306
Database: amarok
Questions:
1. What is the correct Username?
2. What is the correct password?
Do I need to make any magic incantations to the MySQL god (or daemon)?
I've setup mysqld to start at bootup.
I keep getting 'Access Denied' error messages, whatever I enter for 1 and
2 above.

Hi,
For the past few months, I've been using Rsnapshot to to do backups
of /home and /etc to an external hard drive. It's worked well.
However, this week, it's started thrashing the hard drive, and appears to
be making a 50GB backup (that's the size of the source, so an incremental
backup will be much less) go on and on. When the 500GB target drive is
half full, I intervene and kill the rsync process.
Below is part of the logfile from this evening, but it's not very
informative.
Can anyone suggest where I should look, please?

In the preious version of SuSE I was using (10.3), I could set different
wallpapers on each desktop. I can't find that option in SuSE 11.1 -
Where did they move it to? ( I am running KDE 4.1, I think? )

Listmates,
Prior to six months ago, if a package update or install threw an error because
of a mirror time-out or other malady with the mirror system, it was a rare
once-a-year occurrence. Lately, I can't even do a simple update without the
mirror system blowing up 20 times. Something has got to get fixed. What was a
bullet-proof SuSE system of package installs and updates has become so
undependable you literally have to baby-sit each and every update.
That's ridiculous. That's unacceptable.
I used to kick-off remote updates with ssh host.domain.com 'sudo zypper up -t
package' without hesitation, now it looks like the system has gone back to beta
status. What is up with the mirror system? If I set up automatic updates in
yast to run ... 'automatically'..., I end up with logs full of errors. That
never used to happen.
Is there something that can be done to fix this? Moreover, is this something
that can be reported to bugzilla? Or, is this just something else that would
receive the seemingly obligatory 'CLOSED INVA' response from Novell?
No matter how you look at it something has gone dramatically downhill in the
past 6 months to a year that we need to elevate to the proper people so it can
get fixed. Christian, Stefan other opensuse guys, what is the proper direction
to approach this one? Who is responsible for making sure the mirror system
works in a reliable way?
The most recent time-out calamity follows the signature. It is an update I
started 7 hours ago that I am still trying to finish. For single repos, I can
see just choosing a mirror and adding that as a source if, for example, the
update mirrors are having problems, but I shouldn't have to do that for every
repository just to be able to perform update. Let me know who to contact or
where to file this so it will get the attention it needs. Thanks.

Openoffice does not have the connector to be able to use the evolution
address database. It has for kmail
iirc similar situation happens with 11 and then when I received the box
version it was there. I ordered the box version last week so hope
evolution connector is there.
Does any of you have it? Just openoffice/File/wizards/Address data
source and it should be there.
Thanks for your help.

Hello everybody,
a couple of weeks ago I already told my woes regarding the same topic.
The only difference: I used OpenSUSE 11.0 instead of 11.1. I hoped
that my sound problems (I didn't have sound) just "go away" by
upgrading to the newest OpenSUSE version - unfortunately this was not
the case.
I have the following problem: I do not have sound at all :-( there is
nothing but silence ...
My Laptop:
Dell Latitude E4300
Chipset: Intel G45S
Sound: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
I already tried the following things
- I played with the sliders
- I played with alsaconfig as root
- I configured the sound device several times
I also tried to uninstall pulseaudio completely, many KDE 4.2
packages, however, apparently depend on libpulse0, so a I can't
uninstall that lib as I am using KDE 4.2 and I don't want to change
this, as I like KDE 4.2.
nothing ...
The thing I am really curious about: (as with OpenSUSE 11.0) I
compiled and installed a vanilla kernel (2.6.27.{10,11,12,13}) that I
configured via 'make oldconfig' - with the kernel I compiled myself
sound just works ... When I install a 2.6.28.{0,1,2} vanilla kernel I
do not have sound, too. Is there something that breaks sound in the
2.6.28 kernel that has been backported to the OpenSUSE-kernel? I don't
know what impact that libpulse0-package has, but I don't think it is
the source of my problem, as sound shouldn't work with the vanilla
kernel in that case.
Has anybody observed similar problems in the meantime? I would really
prefer to use the kernel that is shipped with OpenSUSE because of
security fixes etc ... Where can I dig further?
Any comment is appreciated!
Ciao, Fabian

Hello:
I would like to use my openoffice 2.x user settings in openoffice 3. I installed openoffice latest stable version OpenOffice_org-3.0.0.3.6-1.1 on openSUSE 10.3. This created a .ooo3 for user settings. Previous openoffice stored the preferences in .ooo-2.0. I am not sure that I can simply copy/rename .ooo-2.0 to ooo3.
What is the correct way to import previous user defined settings (templates, toolbars etc)into openoffice 3?
TIA,
IG

In the latest stable openoffice 3 repository under noarch there are several language related packages, like:

What are these file for? What are the differences between these and packages, like:
OpenOffice_org-l10n-hu-3.0.0.3.6-2.1.noarch.rpm?
