What's on vt10?

I've tried starting several desktops (some remote) and noticed something curious. The desktops start on vt7, then vt8 & vt9. But then for some reason, vt10 is skipped and the next desktop appears on vt11. When I switch to vt10, it appears as though it's being used for some status or error messages. Why is it here, instead of perhaps on vt6? tnx jk

Hi all, I hope that this is the right list for my purpose, if it?s not, it would be very kind if you could give me a hint which list my topic could belong to. System: Notebook: Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V max. screen resolution 1400 x 1050 graphic ?card?: intel 915 chipset Operating Systems: Suse Linux 10.0 Professional Windows XP Home Problem description: Not possible to run 1400 x 1050 resolution using Suse Linux (but working very well in WinXP). Maximum possible resolution using Suse 10.0: 1280 x 1024 Most likely method of resolution: A tool called 915Resolution to perform an Intel Video BIOS Hack. A HOWTO can be found at http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/ for Samsung X20 it can be found here http://www.nothingisreal.com/samsung_x20 (very similar laptop to mine, but not exactly the same). Up to now attempts: I already downloaded and installed the 915resolution tool and pasted the line ?915resolution 5c 1400 1050? to /etc/init.d/boot.local (as the second link suggests for automated calling the tool on startup). Till this point everything seems to be okay because after rebooting and testing the automation of setting the configuration parameters in line 5c (of 915resolution) via typing ?915resolution ?l? it returns 1400 x 1050 which is right for my display. The xorg.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf was also already modified like described in the second link by myself. Problem: The problem I?m facing at the moment is that whether I got something wrong with my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file changes or I missed something in the whole HOWTO because if I follow the instructions ?resolution ?l? outputs 1400 x 1050 but the actual resolution of the screen it still 1280 x 1024. If I try to change something in the xorg.conf file then sometimes the Xserver cannot be started up at all or it starts up with the 1280 x 1024 resolution. Question: Does someone have a detailed HOWTO for E X A C T L Y my laptop series (Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V)? Or did someone already solve the problem on a Samsung X20 and could send me his xorg.conf file ? not matter which Samsung X20 it is exactly that the file comes from as long as it runs with the same intel chipset I think. I would for sure try all files I?d receive as well as any other suggestions to solve the problem, because I am really sick of this 1280 x 1024 resolution compared to the one I achieve in WinXP at the moment? strange permissions mounting USB NTFS drive

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list. I installed SuSE 10.0 about a week ago. First of all I just want to say how much I like this distro so far. I've mostly used Slackware and Caldera in the past. It's been about 2 years since I've done an install and I'm really impressed with how far things have come along. YsSt is a nice config tool. Made it really easy to get networking, sound, and even printing set up (my Alps printer has always been a problem for Linux in the past, no trouble at all now). I do have one strange trouble though, which I have not been able to figure out. This machine is dual boot. I have 3 hard drives. One IDE drive is Windows 2k, formatted NTFS. One IDE drive is Linux. One USB drive is NTFS, and has music files and such on it. In windows the permissions for both NTFS file systems are set to EVERYONE:Full Control. I mount the two NTFS drives with similar fstab entries: /dev/hda1 /windows/C ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/sda1 /windows/D ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 For some reason the IDE drive is accessible from my user account, but the USB drive is only accessible from the root account. It seems to me they should mount with the same permissions and ownership, but instead I see this: dr-xr-xr-x 1 root users 8192 2006-04-29 22:07 C dr-x------ 1 root root 12288 2006-04-29 22:07 D The strange thing is if I unmount /windows/D the permissions return to what I'd expect: dr-xr-xr-x 2 root users 48 2006-04-25 23:23 D When I re-mount the file system it returns to: dr-x------ 1 root root 12288 2006-04-29 22:07 D Notice that both permissions and group change? I can access the drive as root, so I know the file system is actually mounting, just with the wrong permissions. I'm out of ideas as to how to fix this. Any thoughts what's going on here? file list in konqueror or krusader file managers

Hello all: Is there a way to display file names absolutely in alphabetical order in krusader or konqueror so that files and folders would not be separated in two different groups? I looked in the setups but could not find such an option. long boot-up times

hi folks, I have been living with a little irritation for some time now, and it finally dawned on me to ask someone about it. duh. Since upgrading my machines to the suse 9.2 professional boxed set, all of the machines began taking 5 minutes to boot-up... hanging around for a very long time "creating devices" and "setting up kernel module dependencies (if required)". What is the system waiting for? What is the trick to get the boot-up process to fly by like before? This is very consistent from machine to machine; however, once they are booted everything runs great and performance is good. Please help me understand. Thanks. -- Kind regards, Mark H. Harris <><

Desktop Icons

I'm just finishing one of Donald Normans books on computer usability and was wondering if it's possible to control the desktop icons on a per desktop basis like we can with applications. My thought was that the desktops could be set up for different functions. So that each could behave like an information appliance. The Dev desktop I would have a few terms and maybe eclipse, with the work folders. Firefox would open go google. The entertainment desktop would have the music player, movie player and music files. Firefox would open to an entertainment page. The communication Desktop would have irc, messengers and mail The Finance page would open gnucash and my spreadsheet with tax and banking files. I had used acucobol without any difficulty from SuSE 7.3 until SuSE 9.0 and I want to move my aplication to SuSE 10.0. problems with ncurses in SuSE 10.0

Hi everyone: I'm having problems with ncurses and the encoding of SuSE 10.0. When I compile any program using ncurses it mess up all the screen and I can't see the right characters are supposed to be shown when I run the program as it used to be in SuSE 9.0. I tried "export LANG=us_US" and some other possible solutions to this issue but none of them worked out.
