large tar.gz job crashes - /tmp too small?

Hi everybody In one directory I have approx. 11 GB uncompressed TIFF-files (~800 files). I wanted so save them in a compressed archive using konqueror -> compress -> compress as direcoryname.tar.gz. The job started and run for some minutes, then a message appeared with something like "error while compressing file xy" and the job aborted. A tar.gz files of 4 GB was written, containing many but not all files of the directory I wanted to archive. While checking my disk space I noticed that my 5 GB /tmp partition was filled up to more than 90%. A copy of the 4 GB tar.gz file was in there, too. Is the making of tar.gz-files limited to the size of the /tmp directory, are there any other limits or is there an error in my system or way of making an archive? thanks for hints. motherboard recommendation - slightly off topic :-)

Hi, I wonder if anyone has any experience with MSI motherboards? In particular, the MSI K8N SLI-FI for AMD64 chips (nforce4, socket 939). What pecking order do you put for motherboard manufacturers? Asus Abit Gigabyte Epox MSI ECS Foxconn ????????? Cheers, Jon. --

Intel 536EP modem driver for SuSe 10?

Hi. The subject says it all. I've installed SuSe 10, and it doesn't seem to come with a driver for my modem & all I can find online are drivers for earlier versions. Will any of those work? Is there a current one? Thanks, Bruce Duncan hatter(a)calweb.com

[OT] Linux-based phone

Since SuSE is based in Berlin, Germany. I thought that some users on the SLE list would be German. Anybody from Berlin on the list? I would like to get the US price of a Linux-based cellular GSM phone that a Berlin company called ROAD makes. The phones are the S101/S101K. I forgot what the "K" stands for. Laptop recommendation

I gave my old Compaq Presario laptop to my wife, and I need a new laptop to use for my teaching (I teach Unix, Linux, C, and C++ at a local university) as well as for BLU meetings. My presonal requirements are: Brand: must be HP (or HP/Compaq) OS: SuSE Linux 10.0 or possibly VMWare with SuSE running as the primary OS. Chip: AMD-64 (While I work directly with some Intel people, I want 64-bits on the laptop). Screen size: I prefer 15in or better, but 14in would be ok. Memory - would prefer 1 or 2 GB because I want to be able to run a couple of different distros simultaneously for the courses. I've looked at the following models: L2000, DV8110US, DV5120 and dv5140. I've found Linux reviews of the L2000, but not the DV8* or DV5* models, though the DV8110US from eCost seems to have some very good features. I'm not concerned about installing ndiswrapper for the Broadcom wireless. Just curious - what type of music are you referring to? Are you playinga CD or some digital form - MP3/AAC/OOG? In either case, you want to make sure your mixer (kmix) is set to play those files. I noticed when I setup my laptop in October that the CD channel was muted at first. Don't have a clue why. Can't help with the second question. eth1 vs. eth2

I am encountering something kinda odd and thought perhaps someone on this list could assist me. The problem is in the static IP assigned to an add-in card keeps flip flopping on restarts to either eth1 or eth2. I am running SuSE 9.3 fully patched.
