What the Google Summer of Code showed me, is that a relatively small amount of money has caused a great deal of stimulation on getting everyone discussing new ideas that other requests for new ideas seem to have failed to do. It follows on that maybe Novell could a couple of times a year offer a bounty for SUSE Linux projects, and instead of just students leave it open to all developers. We would all discuss and create a list of projects and developers sign up for the bounty. Probably with partial payment on certain project milestones. Ubuntu has a bounty system and indeed last year's Google Summer of Code projects were just included in the existing system of bounties https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BreezyBounties see the table at the bottom for a list of bounty projects. Sound in 10.1 RC3

Hi, Just been playing around in the RC3 beta. I put it on a running 9.3 system that had a working sound system, but under rc3 it is not working. Going thru the YAST sections seems to show a working system but no sound. I have gone to the mixers to check the volume settings. Any hints? this is a AC97 onboard sound sys. PeterB

SUSE legacy - supporting SUSE 10.0

Hi all ! As SUSE 10.1 comes near - SUSE 10.0 will not be supported anymore. At least that's my fear. I do *not* want to change my Desktop OS every half year - that's too frequent for production environment. The problem is - with every OS release I get old bugs fixed - but new ones appearing (regressions) - so even if I switch to 10.1 - it *will* be newer, but I'm not sure if it will be more stable. What I do want is to have my OS - SUSE Linux 10.0 - more stable. Unfortunately, SUSE Linux 10.0 turned out to be poorly tested - even considering the fact that I have filled over 40 bugs in openSUSE Bugzilla during the two-month testing period. Just half year passed since release - but bugfixes are scarse - and support is poor. I would like to change that. First build a community - wiki page on openSUSE that document the bugs & other usability/configuration problems in SUSE Linux 10.0 - and provide solutions for them - described in plain text. If this proves to be successful - next target would be releasing unofficial, community-made "Service Packs" that solves many problems all-at-once.

Firefox image messed up on some websites

On some websites (www.amtrak.com is an example), the dimensions of the displayed entities seem to be wrong or distorted. The result is that one part of the image overwrites another. In the case of Amtrak, it makes the Next button inaccessible because there's something else on top of it. I don't have this problem with the Windows version of Firefox. I'm sure that if the site builders had done things differently I wouldn't have this problem, but alas, I can't remake the world. Wherein lies the remedy? Paul

has anyone had any success with the Atheros wireless in an IBM Thinkpad R51e?

I've just installed 10.1RC3 on a new IBM Thinkpad R51e - the Atheros built-in wireless device is listed by "lspci", but SUSE does not otherwise seem to touch it. I've checked with Lenovo/IBM regarding drivers, but they have not yet come back to me. /Per Jessen, Zürich

Can't open Transcode tarball or it doesn't exist

Hi Folks, I have been trying to get a tarball of transcode to compile on my SUSE 9.2 system. Every pkg I have d/l'd from the sites listed on the Transcode Wiki page: http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode are unopenable. Every one, including the beta versions. Have I made one of those embarrassing newby errors? Konqi Filemgr says : "The file does not exist" even tho it lists it. Is there a location for a transcode I can open and compile? PeterB p.s. WMA to OGG?

What tool can I use in SUSE10 to convert WMA files to OGG format? My kid ripped a ton of cds for me, a couple years ago, to WMA format. I'd like to convert all of those to OGG so that I can play them in Amarok. Is there a preferred tool for doing this? Or is there anyway to play WMA files in Amarok? P
