I just wonder why the names of files with diacritic marks (acute, grave, tilde, etc.) accents are not recognized by windows. I can read and copy my files, but the file names can't be displayed very (see link above). Is there any way to fix it? a.

Mystery of the missing email attachments

Folks, I'm using Sylpheed, fetchmail, and procmail on SuSE 9.3 to pull email from my ISP. The email runs through spamassassin en route to Sylpheed's inbox. Over the past few weeks, I've noticed that some attachments fail to make it through. It seems to happen at random -- some attachments make it, others don't. And so far I haven't detected any patterns among the winners and losers. I know the attachments get as far as my ISP; I've turned off fetchmail and seen them arrive at my ISP via my web browser. They also show up intact on a redundant account I keep with Yahoo. When I run Sylpheed in POP3 mode, rather than have it pick up mail from /var/spool/mail/, all attachments seem to come down. I've also activated and deactivated Clamav to see if it had any effect on attachments. It doesn't. Any thoughts on where to check? Some *rc file entry? With best regards, Pete

kmix crash after upgrade of 9.2

Hi folks, Yesterday I started upgrading my Suse 9.2 using YOU for the first time. Everything was ok except to some programs are crashing now. SaX problem - NODDC not found

Whenever I load up SaX, I get the following error: sax2 x11/0/6.8.2 unknown monitor monitor (0) with id: undefined option "noddc" not found please setup your monitor manually. do you want to start the configuration dialog to setup the display now? Suse 9.1 crash and wont reboot

Hi I have a bad day. One of the data server is down. First it was not accessible (samba, appletalk, ssh, ftp...) so I plugged in a screen and try to log in directly, thinking of a network problem. There was no kernel panic (no flashng leds on the keyboard). But when I tried to type it started ok then stopped. Complete freeze. I had to hard reboot and then GRUB did not find is way out. I have put the CD1 (Suse 9.1) on and tried to boot from the installed OS... without success : It was a neverending "system analyses". The computer has 2 SATA disks (unknow brand, sold with the DELL box). System was installed on an reiserfs partition (/). home/ is on a software raid 1 partition (dev/md0) formatted reiserfs. I suspect a filesystem corruption. Any ideas ? BTW... I just started Automatic Repair in YaST System repair... It found /dev/sdb and /dev/md0 but failed to find swap partition and dev/sda ... Does that mean that the first harddrive is out of service ? My approach, take the 1 DVD, copy into an FTP directory, run yast remotely on 1_CD installed system. Not ideal but might the get the work done. I ran into problems doing this but I think the answer is either in the "Network Installation Sources" or "Installation Sources" HowTo documents that I just printed and I am reading. I DO like the idea of somehow running some kind of a script on the newly installed 1_CD system to complete the installation via FTP. Missing Icons

Hello, All My install of Beta4 has lots of icons missing. Just some examples: there is no icon for Firefox, Mozilla, OpenOffice, Evolution, Inkscape ... the list goes on. The menus show just a generic program icon instead of one specific to the program. Is this just me or is it general? Regards Alistair

sane/hplip driving me, ur... not working

I have an HP PSC 1600 series printer/scanner. I installed this on my SuSE 9.3 laptop a while back and for the sake of starting hplip it "just worked" scanner and all. Now I'm trying to run this on a desktop machine (SuSE 9.3 also, but this one is 64 bit) and although hplip is running and the printer part works a treat, Xsane reports no sane devices. usb mouse hotplug and X

I'm trying to figure out why my usb wireless mouse has stoped working in X (both hotplug and coldplug). This is on my laptop (Dell D600). The touch pad works fine. This issue started when I was at SuSE 9.3, and I never found the cause. Upgrading to 10b4 did not help. Ideas? Thanks. -Bryan

gFTP works fine under KDE. It's available on the install CD and you just have to install it to make it available on the menus. The exception to that rule is that it isn't on the SLES 9 CD set. nfs mounts

Hi list, I just tried to mount a nfs share via YaST (10.0 beta4). I opened the configuration via nfs client and clicked on "Add", entered the needed data and click ok, but it says: "Fehler Der eingegebene Pfad ist ungueltig. Er muss kuerzer sein als 70 Zeichen und mit einem Schraegstrich (/) beginnen." Translation "Error The entered path is incorrect. It must be shorter than 70 chars and it must start with a slash (/)" That's not correct! in my /etc/fstab I entered: pc03:/home/public mnt/pc03_public nfs user,defaults,noauto,rw 0 0 and do a # cd # mkdir mnt/pc03_public # mount mnt/pc03_public this works fine. The export entry on pc03 is: /home/public 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 (secure,rw,async,nohide,subtree_check,root_squash) -- mdc

SuSE 9.3 Gnome conflicts

Ever since ftp.gwdg.de SuSE/9.3-i386/gnome was provided, I have been using it with apt-get to update the packages on my system. Recently, __some__ packages were upleveled to use a new cairo and placed in that depository. But __other__ packages, which I had already installed on my system, were NOT upleveled at the time. When today I type 'apt-get dist-upgrade', it offers to upgrade a bunch of packages, but would REMOVE 64 PACKAGES from my system, many of which I'd rather keep (e.g., 'gdm' and 'gnome-panel' and 'gnome-themes' and 'totem'). I __WISH__ the 9.3 Gnome component depository on ftp.gwdg.de would provide "compatible" packages to upgrade what is in my system, instead of causing apt-get to threaten to remove so many. [Or else NOT put packages into that depository which cause lots of previously distributed packages to become "not compatible".] mikus

bootloader install failed on ppc

Hi list, I own an old iMac "blueberry" and tried to install beta4. I booted from CD and the YaST came up and worked well, but at the end it wants to install the bootloader...and it failed. The HD was empty, cleaned with a "dd" before. Trying a Debian Sarge install worked out-of-the-box. -- mdc

I am putting together an Opteron system later this week which will function primarily as a Java/database/sw development workstation and secondarily as a photographic/video workstation. The system is based on the Supermicro H8DCE motherboard, Opteron 246(s), 4G RAM, and eVGA 7800GTX. I hope to use the motherboard SATA to run (4) 250G SATA drives in Linux software RAID 10 I plan to install SuSE and/or Debian. Probably SuSE for now and try Debian when the current transitions have calmed down a bit. My question for you folks is: should I install SuSE 9.3 Professional (which I have on other desktops/workstations) or the openSuSE SuSE 10.0? Thanks R.Parr, RHCE Temporal Arts

The /etc/init.d/asterisk is starting /.../asterisk instead of safe_asterisk (the script). "rcasterisk start" somehow runs under user=asterisk. how can I change it to run under user=root (I know the arguments not to do this). safe_asterisk runs under user=root (or whoever was used to start it). When I modified /etc/init.d/asterisk to start safe_asterisk, it fails on authorization to /dev/tty9 and gets into a loop (the script tries to restart when it fails). does anybody have some recommendations? solutions? Problem with net connection - suspect SuSEFirewall

Dear people, I have been consistently having problems with my net connection and suspect that it's not my ISP. I am able to browse, do FTP downloads, ping www.google.com etc, but KGpg, YOU, Gaim etc simply freeze and timeout on me. I have asked my ISP whether they are disabling any ports. They said none except VoIP which I must ask to be enabled (for free). I wonder if it is the SuSE Firewall. I have enabled the firewall, but perhaps it is working overzealously? Back in Windows, ZoneAlarm used to popup a window for each application that wanted to access the net or act as a server, and when I said Allow all was fine and happy. Now I suspect SuSEFirewall is working and disabling access of apps to the net without asking me. Please tell me what to do? Doesn't SuSEFirewall ask the user like ZoneAlarm? I should, no? If I try to update via YOU, it says it was not able to retrieve the mirrors list and asks me if I would like to configure it manually, but I'm not sure what FTP address to provide. Please advise. Help with POP mail please

Hello all. I've now shifted to an ethernet ADSL connection and so am connecting to the net via Linux now. But I have problem configuring KMail to communicate with POP servers. Even though I repeatedly confirm by logging into webmail that the password and username is all right, KMail keeps reporting that there was an authentication failure. Same happens with Mozilla Mail too, so probably this is not a KMail problem. (Mozilla Navigator keeps time-outing on me too.) I was able to access this mail via Windows, so there is not a problem with the account. KMail fails often, BTW. SIGSEGV (or whatever) faults abound. If I try to update via YOU, it says it was not able to retrieve the mirrors list and asks me if I would like to configure it manually, but I'm not sure what FTP address to provide. I'm now using my IMAP account, but I would really prefer to use POP. Thanks all. I copied the bcmwl5.sys & .inf files to /tmp/driver/. did an 'ndiswrapper -i /tmp/driver/bcmwl5.inf and saw that ndiswrapper needed the .sys file. I then tried to remove the file using ndiswrapper -e, which reported the file was not installed, so, I tried again, ndiswrapper -i /tmp/driver/bcmwl5.inf & it say's it is installed. Did a modprobe ndiswrapper, with no message. Looked at 'dmesg', "ndiswrapper:module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag" & "ndiswrapper version 0.10 loaded (preempt=no,smp=no)" The ndiswrapper is the one off of the SuSE 9.2 DVD, the bcmlw5.xxx files are from MS XP home, which came with the Gateway. I do have access via 10baseT but I want wireless. iwconfig doesn't find any wireless extensions. Any help would be appreciated...Thx in advance. Don Don N7NKJ SuSE Linux vs. 9.0

LSI SATA RAID (again)

Hi guys, This is getting weirder. First, I found that one can disable "fast initialization" in the card's firmware. I did this, let the discs initialize properly (which took about a day), tried again - no improvement. I replaced the card with my cheap-o 2-port Sil_3112a card, tested writing to the discs independantly, and in kernel based raid, both raid-0 and raid-1. Single disk and raid-0 both gave me between 25mb/s and 30mb/s, raid-1 gave me about 20mb/s. Then I tested single disc on the LSI card, port by port. Guess what I found? Ports 0, 2 and 4 are dogs, can barely manage 10mb/s. Ports 1, 3, and 5 do around 25mb/s. To confirm this, when I initialized the discs, the ones on ports 0 and 2 (I didn't have any on 4) took about four times as long as the others. Anybody know why this is? Then I decided, OK, let's make a raid5 (in the card's firmware), with only three discs on ports 1, 3 and 5 (the "fast" ports). Again, I struggle to reach 10mb/s. While this copy is in progress, I see my system load shooting to over 8.0.... So, my theory: This card relies on the megaraid driver to do the heavy lifting. The CPU on the board is the older P4 based Celeron 2ghz (128k cache), and absolute dog in it's own right. mounting a sco fs (umsdos or GNU HURD) in Suse 9.3

Greetings, We had a sco server -- really very old +7 years or so. The main board is fried and we need to get the data off the hard drive. I have tried to boot it on oldish but working hard ware but it give a kernel panic, So I am trying to mount the drive under linux to see if I can copy the data off. This is prooving to be a task of considerable difficulty. It seems Suse 9.3 lacks support for umsdos or what fdisk reports to be a GNU HURD file system. Using yast to automount also doesn't work. Has any one any ideas as to how to achieve this task? Major Network & USB Problems after ugrading from 8.1 to 9.2

I just finished upgrading my system to 9.2. I was able to go to the web, do online update, and download and install all of the patches. But now I have major problems, as follows -- *) I can no longer get to the network. When I go into DNS and Host Name, the box where I normally check "Update name servers and search list via DHCP" is grayed out. I don't know how I was able to get to the web to do Online Update and now, all of a sudden, nothing! *) Unless I boot from the installation CD and select "Boot Current System", I have no keyboard or mouse usage. I have a USB keyboard and mouse. I had no problems with this in 8.1. Any help greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

Is it an reasonable guess that this may be the final SuSE on CD? I would not mind if they use an optimised version of YAST that work an order of magnitude faster. Upgrading from 9.2 to 9.3 should not take four hours. Maybe if YasT used self-optimising code for the different Intel/AMD processors. samba works but how to secure it

TIA I can get samba sorta working. I made a directory on 9.3 called /zak and shared it as hard as I could and was able to copy stuff on to it from a WinXP machine without needing to login. This is part of my samba.conf ... [zak] path = /zak/ guest ok = yes read only = no valid users = admin users = case sensitive = yes msdfs proxy = no How do I secure it so it needs a password to gain access? Making it like that (above) was the only way way I could get access. SuSE is in LAN with a Novell 5.0 file server and no Windows domain controller. It isn't critical for me but I want to be able to do it in a Windows LAN without a domain controller for a client because I want to keep him away from Win 2003 SBS if I can. I have already said it would be better to use Linux than install a Windows domain controller. I gotta bigmouth. Mike

Hi list, I tried to download the iso images via torrent, but it is unuseable. It took me two days to get CD1 and CD2, and CD2 was corruppted. Downloading the 5 CDs via browser needs about 20 hours and I have 5 working iso files. But I can reproduce an error, that was posted here before: YaST wants to check the media and it fails (md5sum wrong). I compared the iso files against the MD5SUMS file and it says OK. I tried to burn them with and without "-pad" but it doesn't change anything: still md5sum wrong. But I can install without any errors from these CDs. -- mdc

Major Problems Moving from 9.0 to 9.1

Well, I've been trying to move toward 9.3 in a step by step fashion, starting from 8.1. I had problems with 8.2 so I skipped by it and went to 9.0. Everything was fine there, so I proceeded to migrate to 9.1. That didn't go too well, to say the least. I have two major problems right now (that I know of). 1) Somehow, my boot loader got moved down too far into the partition and my hardware can't branch to it, so I can't boot from the hardware. I can't understand how the hell this could happen since I only have 2 partitions, a 3 gig swap and then my regular partition. Is there some way that you can move the boot partition up to (say) the top of the regular partition? 2) I cannot get my network to work. I have the same settings I have always used. Routing Default Gateway -> 192.168.1.1 Enable IP Forwarding -> Checked DNS and Host Name Host Name -> linux Domain Name -> local Name Server -> 192.168.1.1 Domain Search -> local I have no idea what to do from here. I don't want to go to 9.2 until I can download the 9.1 patches and I can't do that until I can get to the web. Any help greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

network install on PII 400MHZ w/ 256Mb

I'm trying to install beta3 on a PII 400MHz with 256Mb RAM. I boot off CD1. If I specify manual=1, the installation procedure is unable to detect the harddisk, even if doing an "fdisk /dev/hda" in another tty works just fine. If instead I choose just Installation, then abort (to revert to manual install) as soon as I can, it works fine. I'll be trying beta4 in a while. /Per Jessen, Zürich

I get inconsistent results when I build ISO files for b3->b4 opensuse i386. The CLI is: $ applydeltaiso SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta3-CD1.iso SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta3_Beta4-CD1.delta.iso SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta4-CD1.iso Attempt1: md5sum of ISO file != official b4 CD1 iso file. Upon mounting the ISO file and checking out the rpm files, only one rpm file reports error "error: i586/xorg-x11-Xvnc-6.8.2-94.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID 9c800aca" Attempt2: I get error shown below: reading 169027694 bytes from old iso...done indata read 8192 bytes failed Attempt3: md5sum of ISO file == official CD1 iso file !!! The input files are the same in all 3 runs and yet the results are different. The md5sum of the original b3 and delta files checkout against the official md5sums. Hi, I'm trying to get the sensors of that motherboard to work. sensors-detect found SMSC EMC6D100 or EMC6D101 (lm85 driver). I think this is the temprature sensor for the board. How do I get this to work ? I loaded the i2c-modules for the lm85, but running sensors returns 'No sensors found'. There is another sensor-chip PC87372, but this seems unsupported for the moment. Hi guys, Is anyone running a raid configuration on this controller? I just tried it out and for some reason, regardless of of the raid level, SUSE still sees two discs, while it should see only one, right? There isn't a lot one can set in the raid card's bios, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas? Thanks Hans

Unable to print

I made a big mistake: I tried to print from GIMP. I should have known better. When I tried to do so, in SuSE 9.0 Pro, it stopped my printer from printing anything. That was a while back, and I can't remember what I did to fix the situation. I repeated my mistake yesterday with GIMP and SuSE 9.2 Pro with the same result. Now, I can't print from any application, including OpenOffice. I got no error message. YaST printer config is fine. When I do lprm, it says "unable to cancel jobs." Kaffeine is not working at all on SuSE 10 beta 2, yes it will start up but there is no video or sound. It is a old problem because within 9.3 it was the same, for a while. Is there allready a solution for SuSE 10? Or will it come with 10 beta 3. By the way , is it possible to get Mplayer working with the codecs from 9.3/ Lot of questions this time. Ben Henderson

Need help copying directories

I would like to make a copy of directory on a second hard drive. I want all of the links resolved and the actual files copied, even if I end up with duplicates under different subdirectories on the target media. I tried -- cp -R source dest but there are still links in dest. I don't see any options under man for cp that says to do what I'm trying to do. Will cp do this? If not, what other command can I use? /home on it's own partition

Is there a reason that /home is not on its own partition anymore by default? I just acquired a new Pentium 4 machine without any operating system and installed SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro via booting from DVD. To my considerable surprise I saw that the Apache2 webserver it decided to install was the 64bit version. Does this mean I have 64-bit Linux? How would I find out? If it is the 64-bit version, in the interests of greatest stability as a DBMS server and web server should I be re-installing a 32-bit version. I have no investment in configuration. Thanks Mike

How to change text bootup screens to graphical bootup screens?

Pardon for the deluge of mails from me, but I am only now online on Linux and hence have fully started to live in Linux, so I will get a lot of questions. Thanks for your patience. I would like to see the graphical bootup instead of the text one. Starting from "Starting Desktop System" "Starting KDE" etc I see the green graphical screen with the SuSE logo and everything, but before that, I see the text only. I would like to change this back to graphics ("Starting Services" etc). Please advise how to do this. The relevant /boot/grub/menu.lst entry is this, if it is of any use: title SuSE Linux 9.3 kernel (hd0,7)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda8 selinux=0 resume=/dev/sda12 splash=silent showopts initrd (hd0,7)/boot/initrd Should I change "splash=silent" to something? I fear doing something that may crash my system, since these are kernel parameters if I am not mistaken. When booting a 2.6.12 or 2.6.13 kernel on SuSE-9.2 or 9.3 it gets to this point: Starting udev Creating devices input:ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse on isa0060/serio1 The machine hangs there for about 10 minutes then boots on up and everything works fine. Anyone seen this and maybe know what it is? There are no obvious messages in /var/log/boot.msg. Thanks Mark

Wierd 9.3 Install DVD Behavior

I acquired a copy of the SuSE 9.3 dual layer DVD and tried to install it on my 64-bit machine. In the process it hung trying to figure out what my current (9.2) configuration was. A second time it hung during boot, after the kernel had loaded. Deciding that the DVD was bad, I complained to the supplier and they graciously sent me another copy without further question. I tried it, but it did the same thing. I then got to thinking that maybe it was a bad DVD drive. I went to my other machine, also at 9.2 (32-bit machine this time), at the time and it did the update without a hitch. So, I came back to the 64-bit machine and tried to look at the DVD contents. Konqueror hung trying to open it. I then booted into that other OS and tried to look at it with Explorer, expecting that it would fail also, providing further evidence that the drive is bad. Well, it worked fine. So, now I'm left scratching my head. The 9.2 dual layer DVD works fine also. Does anybody have any thoughts as to what might be causing the problem here? Is it just a flaky DVD? (FWIW, the 32-bit machine is running an HP 300i DVD writer while the 64-bit machine is running an HP 400i.) Is there a boot option that might help me get past this? Issues with changing to new DVD-R/W drive

I have a 9.3 install with a DVD drive and CD-RW drive. I bought a DVD-RW drive today and installed it in place of my CD-RW drive. I also switched the DVD-ROM drive with one from another machine. Now when I boot SUSE I get numerous errors such as: hdc: packet command error: status=0xd0 {Busy} ide: failed opcode was: unknown hdc: DMA disabled hdc: drive not ready for command hdc: ATAPI reset complete ide-cd: cmd 0x25 timed out hdc: lost interrupt The physical connections to the drives appear OK. Intel 82562EZ NIC not working with SuSE 9.3

Hello, I've got an onboard Intel 82562EZ network card that I'm having trouble with on SuSE 9.3. It shows up in Yast2 and I can configure it as 10.62.56.252/255.255.255.0 <http://10.62.56.252/255.255.255.0>. Hi, hope this is not an old subject. I have a ASUS Pundit with the sis5513 and i cannot access the harddisk. It keeps reporting "ide failed opcode was: 0xef" and "invalid geometry: 0 phisical heads". I've tryed with 2 hds, this happend with both, but with windows both work perfect. Also used to have Suse 9.2 installed and worked fine. Can anyone help? This is sort of OT, but I thought everyone here should be aware. I've never used this address I'm using now (samjnaa at fastmail dot fm) for sending or receiving mail, and only recently signed up to SLE using this addr since I had problems with my GMail. But today I got the spam included at the end of this mail. I have never visited this freenet.de website, so it is impossible that I have *asked* them to send me this mail. I have used this address only for my SLE, SKDE and SuSE-OT lists and no other mail comms, so it is probable that some spambot is scanning these lists. If others also have received this kind of spam, then my suspicion will be confirmed. I request the authorities to take any steps possible regarding this. Thanks for a great service! USB Keyboard during booting?

Does anybody else have a USB keyboard? And if so does it work during boot? As it so happens I keep two keyboards plugged in, one English (PS2) and one Swedish(USB), so I can always use the ps2 one, for those rare instances I need to do a boot option. Which also leads me to another question while I have your attention. Would it be possible to configure each keyboard for a different input language, rather than switch in software when I switch keyboards. Thanks, Pflodo.

How to install 9.3 from network using DVD and samba?

Hi! Hopefully somebody here has done this... could not find anything from google. My main computer crashed (well it was an old one...). So now I'm setting up a "new" computer (another old PIII :-). I have the DVD for SuSE 9.3 Pro, but the computer does not have a DVD player. Another Windows laptop does have. So, what I though I'd do is to start the installation over the network using windows sharing of the DVD. >From SuSE netowkr installation cd: "Start Installation of System" + "network" + "SMB / CIFS (Windows share)" and then use DHCP. Now the installation asks for the samba information. This is what I tried to enter: IP: 192.168.1.101 (obviously home network address" share name: suse (this is also correct) directory on the server: I have no idea what to put here. The default is /. Then comes the login information for the server. Now, if I leave the directory empty, the installation will not start. If I enter the default /, the installation starts and I see network sage from the Windows laptop using task manager. So the share works. Well, this far it is. After that I'll get to the YaST. Language settings and then Installation settings. Everything else looks there just like I expected... except the Software selection, which states: "No source found at "smb://USER:PASSWORD@192.168.1.101/suse//;workgroup=home" and "ERROR: No proposal" What now? What am I doing wrong? -- HG.

Synaptic cries foul

Synaptic tells me that I've got a broken gnutls package. It tells me that I have the latest version (1.2.0-3.2) and claims only it is broken. When I select reinstallation, however, synaptic wants to remove several other programs for some reason. Has anyone else seen this kind of problem? If so, what was your fix? Thanks in advance, Jack

screen blanking

On all three machines where I have been installing the betas, the monitor blanks even if I tell it not to in kcontrol (Peripherals / Display and Desktop / Screensaver) and SAX (DPMS off). Is this a bug? How do I stop it happening? changing screen size

Hello, Using SAX2, I can't get the screen size to change from 800x600. In windows the res' is 1200x800 @ 60Hz. The device is a Toshiba laptop with the 15.4" wide screen and an Intel mobile 915GM video card. Also, not sure which Modeline Algorithm to use nor display size settings (in mm) under the expert tab. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. James

Automatic Runlevel 5 Boot Problem

Hi folks, I am having a problem booting into runlevel 5. Before anyone says edit /etc/inittab, or use YAST2 here's my default pasted right out of inittab # The default runlevel is defined here id:5:initdefault: From what I have read, that means I should be runlevel 5. Here's the history. I'm running SUSE Pro 8.2 and wanted to be able to copy a CD in K3B. K3B was not recognizing my CD reader. SUSE had this helpful article at: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/04/tsaupe_k3b.html I tried to follow the directions but munged something and after rebooting got a kernel panic. I booted into Linux safe mode (Grub is my default boot manager) went to try and undo what I had done in YAST2. I obviously really screwed up, because I could not find my change. Anyway, In YAST2 Boot Loader Setup there is a "Propose New Configuration". I ran that and accepted what it recommended. Now the system boots fine into runlevel 3. YAST2 says it should be runlevel 5, inittab says it sould be run level 5, yet I get runlevel 3. I can log into my box and execute an "init 5" and everything comes up fine (as far as I can tell). Somehow, I'm still zigging when I should be zagging. Any helpful hints ? The boot log does NOT show any errors that I can tell. It has to be something simple, but right now I haven't got a clue. --- Charles

Hi guys, I've had cyrus setup with simle plaintext authentication using sasl2 for imap on my notebook (so I can change e-mail clients at will). All worked faboulous since 9.3 came out. Today I installed xffm and xfcalender via yast sw_single, and since then I cannot log into my imap. Enabling DRI for Twister K (S3 Savage) integrated laptop graphics?

I'm running SuSE 9.2, but I'm going to move to 9.3 soon. I was wondering if anyone had any success enabling DRI for SuSE 9.x and a Twister-K graphics chipset? I tried a while back but ended up giving up because I wasn't sure which of the required components (Xorg, MESA, DRI) would need updating from the standard SuSE versions, and what effect it would have on system stability and RPM management if I installed non-SuSE packages from source. 1 CD install ready to test

Hello fellow openSUSE enthusiasts. As announced last week I have now finished 2 seperate iso's based on standard beta3. Both are single CD installation iso's without any modifications to the actual packages. I will continue maintaining these and additionally to those create and maintain a gnome iso. You can find them at ftp://opensuse.linux.co.nz/pub/SUPER/iso/ super-openSUSE-20052908-standard-kde.iso: kde base install on 1 CD (570 Mbyte) super-openSUSE-20052908-standard-minimal.iso: minimal install on 1 CD (390 Mbyte) A set of iso's with SUPER modifications already included will also be available in a few days. These iso's will be called -enhanced-kde.iso and enhanced-minimal.iso to differentiate them from the ones without any modifications (just straight openSUSE) called -standard-kde.iso and -standard-minimal.iso. This is the first set of iso's and I would please ask you to test them and add any packages you would like to add to them to the following Wiki page. Any bugs should also be reported to that site. http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/1_CD_install The iso's are done using the standard recommended Novell way. I have modified control.xml to have a more streamlined installation. I have tried to add /boot and /home (you can see that in the control.xml), but for some reason it ignores it, maybe a suse.de person can give me a hint? I followed the NLD documentation from our website. Apart from that it is a straight install of beta3. I added a new My.sel under suse/setup/descr, which contains the needed packages. All in all a very straight forward process and I am thoroughly impressed with the modularity and simplicity of our installer. Having played with Anaconda in the past, I find our installer refreshingly simple yet very powerful. Have fun! The reason I'm migrating instead of doing fresh installs is that I need to carry my Oracle system with me. I don't know how to back all of that up and get it re-installed from scratch. That's why I'm migrating. I tried jumping from 9.0 to 9.2 and from 9.0 to 9.3, but it doesn't seem to be supported (it said something about no plan for converting packages).

When I try to boot my machine, I get this error -- Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS Sounds like my grub stage2 is too far down on the disk to allow for a boot. Is there any way to move this up? I seem to recall someone else having a similar problem in the past week, but I'm not sure if it was exactly the same thing. In any case, I didn't really didn't quite understand what was being discussed, but I'm going to try to find that thread. Meanwhile, can someone tell me if there is a quick solution to this? Hello, Actually, I can't get the network up even if I give the NIC a static IP address. When I restart the network I get the following; Setting up network interfaces: eth1 device: Marvell Technology Group LTd.: Unknown device 4351 (rev 10) How can I fix the network? After assigning the NIC a static address, I can ping it, but I can't ping the gateway address or anything else, for that matter. Thanks for your help. Gnome and KDE desktop install...

Hi, I wonder, which would be the easiest way to install both the Gnome and KDE environments. Previously I always installed KDE and later on put Gnome onto my system if needed. This was sometimes problematic, because a selection like "Gnome Desktop" doesn't exist and selecting the general Gnome under YaST takes plenty of unneeded packages with it. So not only the desktop components. I had an idea, that next time I should install Gnome at the setup of the machine, then later on through YaST I could add KDE Desktop without any problems. Simply because selection like that does exist... I think this method would work, but please in case you have better idea, let me know. In addition please warn me if later on I could have difficulties e.g. with kdm I used to use by default and having no experience with others. Thank you, Pelibali

Beta 4: Problem with Kernel - make prepare

Attached my fstab. Requirements: 1. Read-write access for the user samjnaa (me) to my Windows and Fedora partitions. 2. Create a mount point for my USB Pen Drive where subfs will automount it when I plug it in, just like for my CD and DVD drives. Both these don't currently work. Even as root I am not sometimes allowed write access to create a directory etc on the vfat partitions. What edits to apply to fstab? Please advise. Sony Vaio resolution problem

Hello, I just bought a Sony Vaio VGN-FS195XP and SUSE 9.3 Professional. I have a couple of problems, but let's start with the resolution. I cannot make it work on 1280x800. It has a GeForce Go 6200 board with 128 Mb and a 15.4 " monitor that should work in 1280x800. Problem with Konq not showing exact byte count in a folder

Hello. Recently I copied the contents of a DVD to my HDD. But while trying to verify whether the contents were properly transferred, I got the following output from Konq: DVD: 19 Items - 10 Files - 9 Folders 813 files, 31 sub-folders 2.8 GB (2,993,023,722) HDD: 19 Items - 10 Files - 9 Folders 813 files, 31 sub-folders 2.8 GB (2,993,155,038) Is this just because of the change in file system? Windows XP shows me the exact number of bytes present in the actual and the number of files occupied on this. If Konq showed that here too it would be nice, I think. Faulty detection of DVD as CD in SuSE 9.3

When a DVD is inserted in the drive, SuSE says "a data *CD* was found". SuSE hardware detection - a data CD was found Open with kfmclient openURL file:/media/UDF_Volume? There is no fault in functionality, so this is probably just a cosmetic error. Shall I file with Bugzilla? I tried checking and I couldn't any, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place or with the right keywords. Unable to see certain icon previews in Konqueror

Did not receive any replies first time I posted this on Sept. 26th, so trying again. Would appreciate any help. I have added some additional information that might help. Thanks! Gil Sorry if this post is a bit wordy. I'll try to be as succinct as I can. I'm running SuSE 9.3. Clean install. I have a folder in the home directory that contains approx. 200 video clips (.wmv, .avi. mpg, etc.). I have another folder in my home directory that contains many .jpgs, .gifs, and .pngs. And I have CF and SD cards with numerous .jpgs. Here's my problem. When I had 9.2 on this box all of the video clip icons and all of the .jpgs, .gifs, etc. no matter where they were located would show a preview in Konqueror in place of the regular icon. .jpgs would show me an image so I knew what was in that file without opening it. A video clip icon would show me the first frame of the video. But now with 9.3 none of the video clips will preview. And none of the .jpgs, gifs., etc. on either the CF or SD card will preview. **However,** the .jpgs, gifs., etc. in the home directory **will** preview. This has me stumped. I cannot figure out why some previews work and others do not. I have clicked in Konqueror "view/preview" and made sure that all 15 of the categories in the displayed list were checked. Did not help. But I also noticed that on my wife's pooter (also running 9.3) she has 17 preview categories. The ones that she has but are missing from my drop-down list are: video files and QT designer files. So, I guess the first thing is to figure out how to get those two additional categories into my drop-down menu. Any ideas? But what's even more puzzling is why .jpgs, gifs, etc. **do** preview if they are on the hard drive but do **not** preview if on the CF or SD cards. SUPER - Beta 4 single CD short and quick review

hello, I just installed SUPER CD 1 based on OpenSuSE 10.0 beta 4 Machine : Athlon 1700+, 265 DDR RAM, Nforce1 Motherboard, Geforce 2 MX 32 MB, 80GB 7200rpm Hdd. This is a **quick** review. Spent around 30 minutes with it. - Took around 25 minutes to install. It went smooth. - After install the network configuation and rest had to be done in text mode (no gui available) :( - Somehow managed to do it :) - Shows a buch of errors below the login screen (dont like it there) - No yast available by default. It show in KDE Control center (Yast modules) - but nothing happens when clicked - I need to setup network and dsl before downloading the yast packages. And network configuration is in yast. I can use console...but where's the fun ;) - It is definetly faster than any other distro I have ever used (including [k]ubuntu) - All hardware was detected. - Suspend mode works Speed : - 30 seconds to boot to Login screen - 5 seconds to boot into KDE after login - 6-7 seconds to start OpenOffice 2.0 Writer - 4-5 seconds to start Firefox - 24 seconds to Shutdown Yaa need to spend more time with opensuse. Will do it when final version comes out...till then back to ubuntu :) Peace out.

Synaptic cries foul

Sorry. I'm running SuSE 9.3 Pro on an x86 machine with 200gb hd and 1gb RAM. Synaptic tells me that I've got a broken gnutls package. It tells me that I have the latest version (1.2.0-3.2) and claims only it is broken. When I select reinstallation, however, synaptic wants to remove several other programs for some reason. Has anyone else seen this kind of problem? If so, what was your fix? Thanks in advance, Jack

I have a old 600mhz Pentium system with around 400mb of RAM.. is this enough to crisply run SuSE 10 (w/ GUI) or should I just go ahead and install it in one of my newer systems? I'de rather install it in my 600mhz system (convienence, other reasons..) but I won't do it if performance will be sluggish. Thanks for the input, JON

Hello, Hopefully I can explain what I'm looking for... First of all I've just started using SuSE 9.3. I converted my system over from Mandriva LE 2005. Mandriva had the capibility of being able to send system events (i.e. power failure notification (apcupsd), cron job output, etc., etc.) to an email address. It was really nice to get these "system" type emails in my work email (Microsoft Exchange). Does SuSE have this capibility? Regards, -Jeff

That's on an 4mbit (down) ADSL in Belgium and looks pretty acceptable to me, given that on my ISP's FTP mirrors, I get 480kB/sec. My upload doesn't get much higher than 10kB/sec though. 19 seeds, 61 peers... so there's definately potential for a lot more ;) As already discussed, please *do* try bittorrent first to see whether you achieve an acceptable download rate within 30min. If you're still creeping around at 5kB/sec, then switch to HTTP or FTP (and regularely check mirrors, especially ftp.uni-erlangen.de and ftp.kernel.org) - with wget and other download tools (curl, d4x, ...) you can stop downloading and continue with another mirror. To Lode: yep, ftp.belnet.be would definately be a killer. AFAICR it's sitting on the backbone between Frankfurt and Amsterdam, so it should be a decent alternative for people outside Belgium as well. I have a raid1 system with 2x 400GB SATA drives. System has been frozen several times in the last 2 weeks. I have been checking memory overnight, no problems, checked harddisks with manufacturertools, no problems found. So I think, that maybe there is something wrong somewhere in the filesystem, but how do I check? Using reiserfsck from rescuedisk on the partitions does not work. Running the rescuedisk does not freeze the system btw. So I do suspect (one of) the harddrives. just a notice to people out there using yast installation server on 9.3 to install 10.0! on my system after updating yast installation server to the version 2.11.5-0.1 offered by YOU, instead of 2.11.4.3 on dvd, nothing worked. SLP announcement failed and manual setting of nfs failed with an error lockd -2 on nfs-state If anyone of you has this problem too, go back to the original version without any other changes, and all works again ;-) HTH, Christian

Devices missing in beta 4

I just got done installing beta 4. It's quite nice and seems to be a bit faster in both install and running kde. My problem comes with the necessary softlink for the fstab to correctly recognize the devices. Has anyone tried getting phprojekt 5.0 working in Suse 9.3? If so I would like to know how you did it. I have phprojekt 4.2 working fine, but need the printing function that is available with 5.0. Tried with a new empty database, it comes up not allowed for any login, even the one put in during the installation. Also cannot restore the new database after it is installed, and the upgrade function does not work with the old database. (Just goes back to the login screen) Art

Hi, I just got a new comp into my lab. It was supposed to be a Windows machine, but I convinced my Prof. and made it into a dual boot system with SuSE 9.3 Pro on it. Everything is fine except that the machine doesn't give out any sound after the installation. The information from the SuSE Hardware tool in the system says this under Sound Device. Intel 828801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller. In Details under Driver it says the following Driver Info #0: Driver Status: snd-hda-intel is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe snd-hda-intel" When I started playing a mp3 song with Real Player, it plays without giving any error message but no sound. I have checked out the volume control in Kmix. It seems to be Ok. When I booted the system with a Live CD, Kate OS, I could play the song with Mplayer that comes with it. Rules out any hardware problem. Also Windows gives sound. Any ideas what could be wrong. I've been trying to get apache to authenticate using the AuthLDAPURL method but have been unsuccessful. Boot speed and preloading have done the trick and made this the fastest feeling SUSE yet. I am extremely pleased with the system. Guys and girls in SUSE.de land have done such a great job! I bow and say thanks a lot for such an improvement from beta2 to beta4. What I tried is many other combinations. Stefan Kulow (coolo) will be pleased to hear that he is right about prelinking after all and even I am convinced now (how could I ever have doubted the master) that prelinking does not entail any significant improvement over an already well configured and preloaded KDE. It actually is all slightly slower. I have also created the same tests for 9.3, just to see how well the folks in Nuernberg are working and pushing themelves very hard to make it better and better ... they show indeed very well the areas in which everyone has improved things. The 1 CD install gave overall an expected boost when booting, since the install is considerably smaller and defragmenting has also some impact on boot time, but of course nothing on the already preloaded apps. There are more tests to be done in the next few days (new kernel and all improvements together), but I do believe that this release is speed wise ready to blow anything away that is out there. Testing other distro's on my reference system I can safely say that SUSE is fast as lightening. I hope you find the benches as useful as I do, even if they are not "science". XFree86 vs Xorg

Hello SuSE people. Asked this question a little over a month ago and got no response. I just need to know the answer to this. Running 9.2 with all updates. Please confirm or reject my assumptions. 9.2 uses xorg. correct? Anything written about X should be written to xorg.conf correct? Here is my point. When I installed 9.2 all of the parameters of my monitor were written to xorg.conf. I changed out the monitor to a new tft/lcd monitor. Sax wrote the parameters of the new monitor to XF86Config. (The old monitor is still present in xorg.conf) Now, everything seems to be working correctly but has left me somewhat confused and bewildered. Is my system using xorg, like it should be in 9.2 or has it changed up and is now using XF86Config. Or, is it using some combination of the two. Why did Yast do this? I'll probably buy 10.0 when it is released so it is probably a moot point. Still would like to understand this though. Bob S.

To bring the discussion onto a rational level again and to start a proper thread about this and forget the derailed past thread, is there anything that this community sees we can do to better the situation now, so that Eberhard and gwdg.de won't be killed when we announce? I personally apologize to Eberhard if my posts caused further stress to him and it certainly was not my intention to provoke him to flame me. I really feel for Eberhard and his frustration is just a symptom for a problem that weMUST solve as a community. I can personally offer a server to be online at the same time as the announcement is done (as I have access to the iso's), but to be honest it is not near as grunty as Eberhard's server, but maybe all together we can make a difference? And I can get the torrent live as soon as the announcement is done. What else can we/you do? So I will be silent for now and leave it up to you all to fill this thread with suggestions and actions and reasonably find ways NOW to alleviate Eberhard's stress level. How to change wav file to mps

I ripped some music some time ago when I did not have any mp3 players. Well now I have one and I would like to put the files on an mp3 so I can get many on a cd. I looked and had I done so when I ripped I could have done it easily. Now I would like to take the wav files and make them mp3 but I can not seem to do so. It would seem like I could use the same KD3 module as it knows how but I could not find a way to do it. does anyone have an idea how to make the conversion? Anyway, I finally gave up on 8.2 and did an end run to 9.0. Just finished getting the install cleaned up and downloaded and installed all of the patches. Everything I normally use is working fine (Samba, Apache, Oracle). Tomorrow, I'm going to try going to 9.1. I've installed it successfully before from 8.1, so going 9.0 to 9.1 should be a piece of cake. I know I'll have a bit of a battle over Apache though. My Oracle system is under Apache 1 and I haven't been able to get it to work with Apache 2, so I'll have to force some things through on that. Everything should work in the end though. At least it did before. I'm heading for 9.3 ultimately. I'm a little worried about 9.1->9.2 because I've read lots of horror stories about that being a tough jump. Hy!, i Was wondering what is the use of the wheel group in suse systems??, in freebsd it has guid 0 and only people that are members of the wheel group can su to root. Does it have any similar use in suse, it has guid 10 so i cant really see if it has any use out of the box?? Can someone tell me how u can configure the system so only people in the wheel group ca su to root, whitout using sudo.

Good day, I am using SuSE 9.2 and SuSE 9.3. The partition in question is ReiserFS. We have an image set on disk that we wish to backup. Each image is about 20 Kb and I think there are more than a million files in the directory. I cannot get a directory listing – the shell falls over when running ls (I’m logged out after about 20 minutes of hard disk activity and nothing coming to the screen). I cannot remove the files – the same as running ls. I tried to put it all in a tarball – after 5 days I stopped it. The tarball was 2 GB at that time. I need to use Midnight Commander to copy the files – everything else falls over. After copying for 2 days, I had a power failure and stopped the process as the UPS was running out of power. At that point the machine was so slow it took 30 seconds to serve a page through Apache that normally took less than 1 second. Can anyone suggest a way of copying this image set to another hard disk or DVD that will not take forever to do? If possible with a progress bar – indicating how much files there are and how much files still need to be copied. I could easily regenerate the images (it took 8 days to do it) if there were a better way to save these files on disk to make it easier to manage. Any thoughts on this one? For Terminal Services, by default Windows 2003 server comes with 2 Remote Administration licenses built-in, which allows 2 concurrent licenses for remote connections, as the name suggests, for administration purposes. If after connecting to the box you clicked the x to close down the session instead of logging off, it may be that the connection is still in a 'disconnected' state which you should be able to see by running the Terminal Services Manager when logging onto the box locally, and from there you can clear the 'dead' connections. Your password may also have simply expired? Trying to log on would tell you this though, and you would have received warnings, by default, within 14 days of your password expiring. SteveC

Hi everyone ! Just downloaded delta ISOs of beta 4 using bittorrent. I tried to check all the md5sum of all the deltas but failed to do so with CD5. I checked file MD5SUMS of beta4 and recognized that this file does not contain the checksum of the CD5 delta ISO. All other checksums are available. can't get IP via dhcp

Hello, Actually, I can't get the network up even if I give the NIC a static IP address. When I restart the network I get the following; Setting up network interfaces: eth1 device: Marvell Technology Group LTd.: Unknown device 4351 (rev 10) How can I fix the network? After assigning the NIC a static address, I can ping it, but I can't ping the gateway address or anything else, for that matter. Thanks for your help. James

Regards Sid. Yast worked just fine. Strangely the bios did not see the drive but yast partitioner did and all I did was reformat it to reiserfs and copy recursively as root from /home then fix fstab. Curious thing I am still having mail retreival problems for the primary user which is why I answer this online. CWSIV

Curious RAID effect?

I think I've worked around this, but I observed what appeared to be a rather strange (and rather undesireable) effect of RAID 1 in a new installation I just made. I started out with a pair of 160G disks, one old with SuSE 9.1 on it, and one completely new. The new one happened to be the "first" drive in a RAID 1 pair in the new install of SuSE 9.3 with the older one as the second drive. Anyway, the install all went fine, and the new system booted quite happily even though there was no non-RAID partition. But I noticed a couple of anomalies, like sound was behaving strangely. Then at the next reboot, the fun really started. I noticed many error messages during the boot process. The system complained of many modules that the kernel couldn't load. The system did manage to come up and run, but then it started telling me about new hardware--this was hardware that was already installed and configured in the initial setup. At the next reboot, the grub splash screen had changed from the green 9.3 screen to the blue 9.1 screen, the system failed to load a bunch of modules, and several other strange things happened. The network, which had been working up to that point, totally failed, and several Yast modules complained of contraditions, duplications, or other errors in the configurations of both the network and sound devices. My guess is that the RAID 1 configuration was sucking the contents of the old 9.1 partition into the new disk. Seems kinda improbable, but the partitions don't get formatted (according to the partition settings) only the RAID itself. Certainly the effect of bits of 9.1 appearing in the new system seems highly suggestive. (I did a fresh install, not an upgrade, and the raid partition itself was formatted, so "should be blank"). Any thoughts are welcome. Meanwhile, I'm going to do a fake or temporary install, non-RAID, and make the front of both drives a formatted swap partition, I'm hoping that by following this up with a real install over the whole of both disks in RAID-1 mode, I will prevent RAID from finding anything that it thinks it can recover. Lost contact with Internet after boot

Hi all, don't kill me for this one now... I have tried and tried searched Internet but I can not understand what is wrong. My work computer has SuSE 9.3 and I've been trying to share a dir to my private Windows 2000 Professional machine. What I wanted to do was to set the IP of the SuSe to static. After booting the SuSe it won't connect to internet but it has access to my local network. How is this possible? I can ping the local servers but not external, host command does not give any results at all. My NETGEAR shows the SuSE as 192.168.111.101 which is a DHCP address but I can ping 192.186.111.54 from my W2K machine which is the IP I tried to set for my SuSE? What can I do? Btw the SuSe is in a docking station and the laptop's NIC is not configured, only the docking station NIC. This is how I had it before. scp in loop

Dear all, I am expieriencing a strange problem when using the secure copy command 'scp'. I use the following command: ~> scp -rp 10.3.10.8:/home/uleopold/ . The directory to copy has a size of 14GB. The starnge things is that it does not stop copying when all files have been transfered but it starts again and hence the directory on the new host grows constantly. Once I ended up with a size of 61GB instead of 14GB. I tried to start scp from both machines and transferred it always to the same machine. I do not know how this can happen. I also tried a smaller single directory. For that on eit worked without any problems. It seems as iff it followed a link and is following this link infinitely. ut I do not have any link in the home directory. Any idea what is happening? Cheers, Ulrich

Gnome Problems After Upgrade 9.2 -> 9.3

Did an upgrade (NOT an install from scratch) to 9.3. Then started having problems trying to run Gnome-related stuff. Found the explanation. Last year, one way or another, I ended up with a Gtk library in /usr/local/lib. 9.3 put that same library into /opt/gnome/lib. But the upgrade hadn't cleaned up the previous /usr/local/lib. Result: This year's Gnome was still fetching from /usr/local/lib, and the module there didn't cut the mustard. My conclusion: The 'Update an existing system' installation process did not check whether the files it put into place had duplicates elsewhere in my system. [And when SuSEConfig runs, it re-links in the obsolete /usr/local/lib module !!] I *still* haven't figured out why on my 9.3 system the Gnome-related stuff was looking for that Gtk library first in /usr/local/lib and not first in /opt/gnome/lib. mikus

Hello I installed Suse 9.3 on HP pavillion zv6131us (AMD 64). The installer detects a network card, and everything looked fine, but when the installer tried to connect to the internet (seeking for updates) it failed. After that, i tried to change some parameters (DHCP, fix IP, for example) but nothing, the error when I tried to reach any ip (for example a dns server) is 'Destination unreachable'. Any suggestions/help. Sorry if it is a basic one, I am trying to move from Windows to Linux. I don't know if there is a way to validate the parameters of the network card or maybe if it is mandatory any patch or something. Thanks. Victor Montes. beta4 1 CD iso available

Hello team Thanks to the SUSE team for a step closer to final. The 1 CD iso's for beta4 are also available on my ftp server. These iso's are standard SUSE-10.0 beta4 without any SUPER mods. As explained before I will continue to maintain -standard iso's also once SUPER iso's will be available. ftp://opensuse.linux.co.nz/pub/SUPER/iso/ The kde iso has now openoffice/gimp and other software including certain kde language support (english, spanish, french,german ,czech,hungarian,italian). Bugs have been fixed. I am running out of space on this drive. I know I can just add another drive to the system and use cp to move the contents of /home as root But I want to know since this is not a install what file system would be best for the new /home ? I have heard some good things abour reiser file system do to with journaling and recovery. I forrmatted the partition when I created it on another system which had a windows utility just to be sure the drive was ok. Who would have thought that something as simple as copying a number of files would have created so much discussion? Thanks for that - I now understand a bit more of why it failed. One thing that will definitely be changed is to put it in various subdirectories to make it easier to copy in the future. The good news is that we managed to get the files copied using mc on a 64 bit machine - took 36 hours though. It was definitely faster on a 64 bit machine (Dual Xeon 3.4GHz, 2GB RAM) than on a 32 bit machine (P4 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM). I should have the disk back with me within the next week or so. Currently it is in the UK where they needed the images (graphic files) for a presentation. Unfortunately they have already prepared the drive for shipping before I could stop them to test some of your suggestions. I will try and see if I can get them to put it back into the machine. We can access a file if we know what the file name is. It is therefore possible to manipulate (rm/cp/ls) any single file and possibly a number of files. Each image is 125x125 pixels named according to a numeric value indicating a number on a grid which in turn represents the world. These images contain some demographic information compiled from various sources within our company. During development we ran into a problem where the graphics was created incorrectly. We then tried to delete the files but couldn’t. At the end we've found that mc can delete them - given enough time. Still no Internet....

But I've restarted router and laptop (removing battery). I can ping servers on the Internet using IP but not names. My default gateway is set to 192.168.111.1 which is the router. The laptop is set to use static IP. Anyone have any ideas? /botmund

Changing fonts dpi

Sorry if this is a very "newbie" question! I am trying, yet again, to get the fonts in SUSE9.3 looking decent on my 15" 1024x768 TFT monitor. They are thick and "blocky". I have tried the monitor driver which was selected on installation, the generic LCD driver and the generic VESA driver. Also hinting, and everything else I can think of. On another list, I have read that running fonts with a dpi of 96 could improve things. But I don't know how to change the dpi in SUSE. I can't find anything in the manuals, or in the list archives. Has anyone changed their font dpi, please? If so, how do you do it? Many thanks for any advice Keith

I have updated http://houghi.org/script/makeSUSEdvd I have added options. This means you can now do this: - select the directory where the is's are - select the directory where you want to save the dvd iso - select the directory where all stuff needs to be placed The last can be used for e.g. network instalation. There is also an option NOT to make the dvd iso, wich can come in handy with the last option. e.g. makeSUSEdvd -d tmp/opensuse/10.0/B3_32/ -o /media/mp3/ -s openSUSE/test -i Also it is possible to use real CD's instead of iso's (could be that somebody brought them to you) Another thing I have done is re-written the recognistion of space available. (Thanks to whom has pointed it out. Don't know if you want to be named or not) It is ready for openSUSe 10.0Beta4. Please let me know if there are other things that can be done. Hi folks, Does anyone have any good references for getting SuSE 9.3 to work with an ALPS/PS2 Alps Glidepoint touchpad? I realize some folks think touchpads are a handicap, but for those tight seats on Southwest Airlines, they can come in handy. I did a quick check of SuSE's support files and found out I could use Sax2 to configure. When I activated sax2, it listed the touchpad, but when I tried to test it, the cursor wouldn't move. I had to key back to cancel to get my mouse cursor back and moving. There's a deceptively simple answer, I'm sure. Thanks in advance for any help... Hi Greg. Two questions.....WHY? WHY? You are munging up the scsi-emulation modules that let you see the cdrom drives as scsi devices. You must have a reason that defys logic. Just upgrade to the latest and use apt-get for the rest or make sure you upgrade the kernel and all the NEEDED modules before you repeat your personal torture. WHY? I did go back through this entire process a second time -- recovering with Storix and re-installing 8.2 again. Same thing. One thing I noticed, though, is that after the Storix restore and before upgrading to 8.2, the cdrecord scanbus seemed to show good output. 0,0,0 showed Samsung as the device. So it looks like the upgrade to 8.2 is where this is getting hosed. But it could also be that the Storix restore introduced some glitch that doesnt show up until I do the upgrade. I cant go back to the way it was before that Storix restore unless I do a YaST restore. Thats a very long, drawn out process and Im hoping I can just somehow get this CD glitch fixed and move on without having to go through that. The rest of my system seems to be working just fine. The message above mentions SCSI, though I do not have a SCSI device. I have occasionally seen messages relating to SCSI in the past, but I just ignored them. I think I may have somehow initially picked that option when I first got SuSE (the 8.1 version I am coming from). Heres my fstab. I have a Samsung CD RW DVD R device # Updated by Storix System Installation /dev/hda2 / ext3 defaults 1 1 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0 /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/sda2 /media/sda5 ext2 noauto 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0 /dev/hda1 swap swap pri=42 0 0\ The comment at the top was evidently placed in there when I used Storix to recover the system after that first failed installation attempt. I did go back through this entire process a second time -- recovering with Storix and re-installing 8.2 again. Same thing. One thing I noticed, though, is that after the Storix restore and before upgrading to 8.2, the cdrecord scanbus seemed to show good output. 0,0,0 showed Samsung as the device. So it looks like the upgrade to 8.2 is where this is getting hosed. But it could also be that the Storix restore introduced some glitch that doesnt show up until I do the upgrade. I cant go back to the way it was before that Storix restore unless I do a YaST restore. Thats a very long, drawn out process and Im hoping I can just somehow get this CD glitch fixed and move on without having to go through that. The rest of my system seems to be working just fine.
