Desktop object: run as a different user

I've run into a problem in 9.1 where I call /sbin/yast2 and I never see the window that asks me for the root password. Instead I get the user-level version of YaST with reduced capabilities. However, if I summon Yast via the K menu, it gives me the query window and works correctly. On further investigation I discovered the difference between the K menu call and the explicit call: the K menu call has an option "run program as a different user". That option is checked, and the user name is blank. I also discovered that I can create a desktop object for YaST2 and the behavior there is the same: if the object specifies "run as a different user" and the user is blank, it works correctly; if "run as a different user" is unchecked, it runs only at user level. So my two questions are: 1. What exactly is the effect of "run as a different user", both in general and in the particular case where the user name is blank? 2. Is there a way to get that effect from an ordinary command line? Paul Abrahams

Monitor setup

I've setup my notebook LCD for VESA 1024x768 and it works fine, but every time I boot SuSE I get: "Your monitor didn't report its X- and Y-Size, this might cause display problems like unreadable fonts. Do you want to configure your monitor geometry manually?" Did I miss something completely?

Yast ftp server source

Greets: I would like to setup an ftp server (internal first, then external) that others can use as an installation source to grab software that we are working on. So far I have only found notes on the susehelp/support system for doing this for SuSE cd's but this is of no interest. Can any one point me to some notes on how to set this up. Many moons ago this was dead simple with yast1 but this no longer seems to be the case. regards /ch

Thunderbird Questions

I'm trying to run Thunderbird 0.8 on Suse 9.1 + Gnome 2.4. For the moment its just installed in a directory in my home directory. But for some reason I don't understand, I can only get it to run properly if I run thunderbird (which I guess is a script) and only if I set it to run in a terminal. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong? Also, is there any specific reason that anybody knows that Thunderbird won't let me create a filter from a message, its greyed out and if I manually create filters, they just don't work. I've used the same filters in the Win32 Thunderbird 0.8 Simon

Bind, DNS, authoritativeness and so on

Can someone please explain to me where I am going wrong here? I've registered a domain with eu.org (pmsumner.eu.org), for which I am running a DNS on a home PC, and have zoneedit providing the secondary DNS. Mount floppies/CDs in gnome

All-uppercase files on vfat

CUPS: starting a stopped USB printer

If the USB cable is accidentally disconnected, the printer enters the "Stopped" state and stays like that even after the cable is plugged back, or "rccups restart". This is not fun at all. One has to use http://localhost:631/ and start the printer manually after adding an administrative account with lppasswd -g sys -a root Too much routine dull administrative work for a simple thing. Ideally, the printer should resume printing when the USB connection is reestablished.
