I think it's time I explore backup options much more, something I haven't done much with Linux in the past, but I never had to reinstall a Linux operating very often either. MySQL LAN access.

Do I have to open my firewall to allow LAN access to MySQL? If so what port does MySQL listen on? After that can I just skip to the MySQL GRANT commands for a given IP or are there some permissions issues? Thanks for your help john

Anders, I'm sorry to reply like this, if you had another reply, I won't see it until I download all my mail from the webmail page to my computer. The ISP stop serving my home town, but they still have webmail, so I let the SuSE stuff go to this email address. A couple of things, thanks for the info about trying to run stuff from the command line. I did get the following messages. opt/mozilla/lib/mozilla-bin: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private synaptic: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private and for good measure, gedit doesn't work either and gets the same error message. gedit: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private So, any help would be appreciated on getting back some of my programs. k3b error on verify using SuSE 9.0

Folks, I tried buring some data on CD and k3b burns it just fine, but when it goes to verify the data it comes back with an error: .swp file not found. I tried 2 CDRs and got the exact message... Knoppix

I have the problem of debugging a huge cod (that I had to change) on a Linux cluster "cpile". Of course I can connect to cpile from my home desktop running SuSE 9.1 In spite of Comcast fast internet having at the same time the Portland Group debugger (pgdbg) running on cpile but displaying on my home box s and a couple of remote terminal-windows opened on cpile and running Konqueror remotely to browse the manualls on-line on cpile ....... slows down my debugging process. Expecially browsing the on-line P.G. documentation (residing on cpile) is a pain ... On the other in the department where I work they only have Windows boxes from which I cannot connect to cpile (Linux cluster) without installing cross-platform packages that require time and experience to make them working. ... I do not have either one at the moment. I was advice to use Knoppix ... I do not know what is is and what it is for ... I wa told: "Have you tried knoppix? It's a cd-only based linux distribution. You can boot directly off of the CD and don't need to install." Does this mean that Knoppix replaces the current operating system even if it does not get installed ? Does it run on top of Windows ? I'm questioning the speed of this solution ... How fast can my debugging get if the poor PC processor has to access the CD to be able to connect to cpile and take care of all the message/data exchange between the PC and the Linux cluster.... I'd appreciate your comments and advice about it .. . Thank you in advance, Maura

Samba & PAM problems

I've configured samba & winbind correctly (it would appear), and I see my win domain accounts just fine. When I try to add PAM to the equation, I don't have any success in logging in using a domain account. I followed a tutorial found here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155887&h… I'm using SEL 9, and I'm not looking so much to login to SEL using a win domain account as I am in creating shares with win user/group permissions on the SEL 9 box. Does anyone have a working PAM configuration they could share?
