Do I have to open my firewall to allow LAN access to MySQL? If so what port does MySQL listen on? After that can I just skip to the MySQL GRANT commands for a given IP or are there some permissions issues? Thanks for your help john

Per the MySQL Manual (/usr/share/doc/packages/mysql) it should be listening on port #3306. Not sure about the rest, but that manual is one of the best I've ever seen. It should tell you. Yes, to allow the LAN to access MySQL you must open the firewall for that port. And you can open it to just the LAN, e.g. 192.168.1.0/24 or whatever. How depends on which firewall package you are using, if any. Jeffrey -- Vote early and often. Apathy only encourages the bums.
