bad sectors on hard drive (suse 9.0)

Hi, I have experienced serius troubles with my hard disk. I have found three bad blocks on reiserfs partition (/ - hdc2) and three more on swap partition (hdc1). I found out this with "badblocks". swap ("badblocks -o file /dev/hdc1"): 369460 369461 369462 reiser ("badblocks -o file /dev/hdc2"; when run with -b 4096, it gives no results!?!): 6867784 6867785 6867786 How can I "repair" these badblocks. When my HD hit those bad blocks it started to make scrapping noise and the system totally freezed (no keyboard, mouse, no CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE!) so I had to power off my computer (till now twice) and then do suse cd1 rescue (fsck --rebuild-tree) to establish normal state. I would be very very grateful if someone could help me. I have SuSE 9.0. Ales

SuSE 9.0 Prof: Apache 2: vhost %0

In the past I used the Apache 2.0 server with a very easy way for virtual domains, as described on the apache web site. No restart, just make the new web servers directory, .... With SuSE 9.0 it does not work anymore! It rather suggest to use for each web site a new /etc/apache2/vhosts/<website>.conf file, and of course a restart of the server. I managed to add the vhost_alias_module and the only difference is now, that the server starts (without errors), but the %0 is taken as is, and not as an replacement for the directory: The entry /srv/www/vhosts/%0/htdocs is taken exactly as such, and therefore not found. Can anybody give me a hint where the problem is, please. I really do not want to add for each virtual domain a more or less identical file. Beside this, I rather would use one large log file and split it into different files when I need it, than to use up too many file handlers. bye Ronald

KIO_SMTP Spins out of control

Hi Folks, I have been seeing lots of instances of KMail failing to finish sending email. The 'Outbox' shows email still unsent and the lower right corner of KMail shows an 'in-progress' Bar and a 'percentage'. TOP shows KIO_SMTP burning roughly 50% CPU forever. When I go to KMail and tell it to put the email in the 'outbox' to trash TOP still shows KIO_SMTP burning 50%. When I close KMail the KIO_SMTP is still spinning. I have to 'kill' the spinning thread and re-start KMail. Now, interestingly, the email usually is actually sent! Can anyone help out? Anyone having similar probs? PeterB p.s. Printing quality

I have just done a number of tests making copies of the same text and printing them using different printing resolutions. Everything printed used CUPS. Nothing I could do resulted in print quality that looked anything near as good as printing in Windoz using MS Word. Why is that, and can anything be done to match qualities? Rem

Mailing Images

Using SuSE 8.2, we have recently moved into the realm of digital images with a canon Ixus II.With advice from the list we have downloaded images via a usb card reader and all is well. My question is in respect to mailing images. What is the best way in linux to compress a jpg file, I apppreciate that there are various programs which will compress files or pack files into a zipped file, however this is for my wife who is less versed in most things technical. Is there a simple method of reducing the size of a jpg file using Gimp or another image software package that will enable her to save the image as a smaller file (jpg) and send it via email still in jpg format? FTP Again

Everytime I try to load a network module it tells me it failed. I have done this this way once before,but it doesn't seem to be working for me today. Any advice for using a boot.iso for FTP install?

NIS database data too long

I have 160 users on our school lan server. All are members of users. yast has also made them members of uucp, dialout, audio and video. NIS complains: makedbm warning: data too long: uucp x 14: (list of users) same for dialout, audio and video. Why does yast make them members of these other groups? To overcome the error, I've removed them from these groups. Now they are only members of users. What are they now missing? Is the 'users' group special in some way that it doesn't have a limit for its data? What can't they do now that they could by being members of the other groups? What is the limit to the string that NIS can handle? Sorry for so many questions, it's just it seems that the nis documentation is the exception to the rtfm, rule :-( SuSE 9.0 with the 21-166 kernel from YOU. Thanks for your patience. steve.
