Found this info on a support list and am passing it along for those still having problems. Did it all from a terminal window and rebooted into safe mode for the install. Works great now. Hope it helps. 1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means installing the 'kernel-source' RPM with YaST2 and configure it then with the following commands: cp /boot/vmlinuz.config /usr/src/linux/.config cp /boot/vmlinuz.version.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux cp /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig dep 2) Use the nvidia installer. export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run 3) Enable 3D support with SaX2.

Spamc, lock files and kmail

I don't use fetchmail, procmail etc (at least nothing that I've configured) , just lowly kmail to download and read my mail. (don't have time or the need to learn about fetchmail, procmail etc, right now). I set up a filter in kmail to use spamc to sort out spam mails and its working well - except for the horrible slowdown while spamc does its job. I've read the spamassasin docs but I don't see any info about how to setup a "lock" file, especially in conjunction w/ kmail. Can this be done with kmail? If so how. SusSE 8.1 disabling write barriers

After upgrading my 8.1 kernel with the latest online updates I now get the following error messages atr boot up. <4>hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } <4>hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } <4>hda:saw err in ide_end_drive_cmd, disabling write barriers <4>hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } <4>hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } <4>hda:saw err in ide_end_drive_cmd, disabling write barriers Are they serious? Can I ignore them? Can I fix them? >From googling I think they may be something to do with ordered write mode on a ReiserFS (jounalled) filesystem. But I have no idea what that means. Help.. Roger

SD Cardreader

Haia After all the misery in trying to get a (Multi) cardreader to work, I'm going to try now with just a single SD Cardreader. Anyone has something like that successfully running with SuSE 8.2? For or against ..Hyperthreading.

I have partly a question and partly a survey. I just got a P4 2.4ghz (c) proc, mb w/ 512M DDR400 dropped in my lap at work so I could upgrade my workstation in the office. It does have hyperthreading. I've never user HT hardware and I've heard conflicting reports about it. I have it turned off right now and I haven't installed the SMP kernel since I'm not sure I'm going to bother. I guess my question is...for a workstation doing webbrowsing, documents in OO, Gaim, playing mp3's and s**tloads of xterms. Does HT give or take away from the enviroment as far as speed and all that. Two APT questions

I have a lot of packages in my /var/cache/apt/archives folder. I would like APT to install them all on a new SuSE installation on another hard drive rather than downloading them all again. So I burnt them on to a CD. I then copied them on to the new hard drive, keeping the same path. However, I can't get APT on the new hard drive to install them. If I reselect all these packages with Synaptic, it wants to download them all again, not look in the folder. How can I get APT to look in the folder and just install them from there? I have tried "rpm --rebuilddb" but that hasn't solved it. An associated question: Does APT make a log of what it downloads? I think it must do. For example, if 8 packages are marked in Synaptic for downloading and the download is interrupted after only a few have been downloaded, if these same 8 packages are later marked again for the download to be resumed, those already downloaded are skipped, but they are all installed. I can't find where it logs what it is doing. Perhaps there is one (simple?) answer for both questions? Any help will be gratefully received. Many thanks Keith

Internet via ADSL router and via dial up possible on same system?

Hello! My notebook needs to get connected to the Internet via an ADSL router when I'm in the office. No problem, I just set up the default gateway to the router's IP and it works. However when I travel I use an Internet dial up connection (kinternet or kppp). But that does not work when the default gateway is still set to the router's IP in the office. So I have to take out the default gateway every time I use dial up connections, and reenter it when I use the router. And while I'm at it, it is probably a good idea to do the same for the DNS entries required by the ADSL connection. How can I configure kppp or kinternet (using Suse 8.2) to do that automatically for me? Thanks, Matt
