Phillip: thanks for your earlier suggestions. Some results: I was unwilling to install and use the 2.4.21pre5 kernel referenced in the link you provided since I was concerned about breaking my VMware. That has been a story in itself but does work now. I have lost the earlier emails (from yesterday) in setting this up, so cannot thread them now. As suggested, I ignored building the HPT module to control the 372 chip, and used the ataraid and hptraid modules included in 8.2. They work ok but, after a deep breath and setting up the hpt bios, I found, much to my chagrin, that they do not support mirroring. Bummer. Setup I wanted to achieve, with four disks, was stripe for Win since I have some large video files to work with there (proprietary program, win only), and mirror with 8.2 since that is where files I really care about and depend on are. OTOH I can access the drive(s) on the HPT controller as individual drives, so I suppose I can just make regular disk b/u's to the second disk, since that would be the essential result of a mirror anyway. Hello, Sol, how are you ? i hope you are great. My question regards the process that is needed to make the import of *.csv files in to the Kaddressbook, because, i can make the import, for some reason that i don't understand, the names of my contacts that was supose to appear in the list o Kaddressbook, the only think that is shown is blanck spaces. It's strange. I' mean, can you describe exactlly what you do, if you use kmail and Kaddressbook ? Thanks man, for your time. Mr. Project

viva, como estas ? É bom ver escrito portugues. Estive a ver o Ximian, o qual eu já tinha inclusive trabalho, mas podiam eles ter mudado o aspecto gráfico do Sw. Acredito que seja superior ao Kmail, mas a questão é que eu não gosto do aspecto gráfico do Sw. Faz-me lembrar o outlook, o qual trabalho e não guardo boas memórias. O Kmail faz tudo aquilo que eu quero, o problema existe apenas na importação de ficheiros *.csv que eu tenha salvo, de modo a poder recuperar os meus contactos. Em principio vou continuar com o Kmail, sou persistente, e vou tentar dar a volta ao assunto. Sabes alguma coisa em relação á outra questão que pus ? hptraid module building

I am trying to build a module to run an HPT372N chip. The HPT site has pre-built modules and kernels for SuSE 8.1 and lower, but not 8.2. They do provide an open source module download. I downloaded that and have been trying to build the module for my SuSE 8.2-athlon system. It seems no matter what I do the module built, when I try to insmod it to see if it will load, gives an error saying it was built for -2.4.20-4GB while I am running -2.4.20-athlon. I copied version and autoconf files from /boot to my source files in /usr/src/linux but still get the same errors. I assume I could modprobe with --force but that always warns with the ...tainted kernel warning and I don't want to trust my system to ignoring that message. I hope I did not screw something else up that I did not understand by running depmod -F /proc/ksyms to try to get version symbols to match. That seemed to make sense in the man description. Still same errors. Any help? I may need to be led by the nose through this. Richard

To kill a process

I have a printing process going on that I'd like to stop, say a wrong date range in gnu cash for ex. I see the process in gtop, complete with PID. I tried "kill pid (pid#) and I get "no such process" What is the correct way, or a way to do this... Thank you for your time.. Lee

Firewire CDRW Problems (again)

I am using SuSE 8.2 ... Linux linux 2.4.20-4GB #1 Wed Aug 6 18:26:21 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux Last night my CDRW was working fine, but earlier today when I went to start writing a CD, cdrecord hung. I killed it and ran scanbus- that hung too. I rmmodded ohci1394/ieee1394/spb2/raw1394, popped out the PCMCIA Firewire card (got the normal messages saying the node was removed), popped it back in- and got the messages I expected- the drive was detected and assigned to /dev/sr0. However, scanbus still froze as did sh rescan-scsi-bus.sh. Xfree 4.3 and SuSE 8.0, any risk ?

Hi ! I saw on the SuSE WebSite today that Xfree 4.3 is now available for SuSE 8.0. I read the README file and saw that it is at my own risk to upgrade my current XFree (4.2) As I am using Nvidia drivers to get a proper Graphical Acceleration System, I am not sure that the SuSE 8.0 drivers given by Nvidia will work after the upgrade. does anyone experience such upgrade on a SuSE 8.0 box equipped with Nvidia Card ? Yast2 from the console problem

Both unit were installed at the original load time. The CDrom and CD-RW are on the same cable and are IDE.. Xcdroast copy of CD in sr0 to CD in sr1 works great. Xmcd works and /etc/fstab shows: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /boot/grub shows: title linux-2.4.20-4GB kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz-2.4.20-4GB root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x31a pci=biosirq idebus=66 hdd=ide-scsi hddlun=0 splash=native showopts. (Question: I don't see where the hdc is changed to ide-scsi. KDE 3.1.3 problems: DPMS, Lock/Logout Applet, and kstart

Hi, I recently updated to kde3.1.3 on a SuSE 8.2 Professional AMD Athlon machine with all YOU updates applied. I run a "blank screen" screensaver that used to turn on after 30 minutes of idle time (this is still set in "Control Center->Appearance & Themes-> Screen Saver"). I had DPMS disabled in sax2 for my NEC 5FG (really a NEC 6FG). After about five minutes of idle time, the monitor goes "off" and the "Lock/Logout" applet doesn't always lock the desktop. I have experimented with "Control Center->Power Management->Display Power Control" by enabling DPMS and setting "Standby after", "Suspend after", and "Power Off After" all to "Disabled". I have toggle on and off DPMS via sax2 for the monitor (restarting the X server). Bottom line is nothing appears to get me back to the old 30 minutes and blank. This is a problem because my NEC 6FG does not like being turn off. It is old and comes back with distorted characters for five or ten minutes. Next problem, kstart doesn't do the right thing with mozilla 1.4. I have eight desktops and an Autostart file that does: /opt/kde3/bin/kstart -desktop 8 -activate "/usr/X11R6/bin/mozilla -geometry 1103x904+0+0" And it always brings up mozilla on desktop 1. Any help would be appreciated. Suse 8.2 won't recognise my modem

I have just installed a old Lucent pci modem,downloaded the required drivers for Mandrake 9.1 and SuSE 8.2.MDK 9.1 is working fine,but I can not get SuSE 8.2 to recognize the pci modem. lspci -v: 00:09.0 Communication controller: Lucent Microelectronics F-1156IV WinModem (V90, 56KFlex) (rev 01) Subsystem: GVC Corporation LT WinModem 56k Data+Fax+Voice+VoiceView+Dsvd Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11 Memory at cefebf00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] I/O ports at d400 [size=8] I/O ports at d000 [size=256] Capabilities: [f8] Power Management version 2 I manually load lt_modem and lt_serial and then check the loaded modules.OK Running wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf gives the output:sorry no modem was detected.
