glib and imlib problems

i'm have them both installed and all the relevent files that go with them but even so when i try to compile some programs i get the error message imlib not installed or not found the same with glib some1 has mentioned that this could be that my system doesnt recognise that they are installed im running SuSE8.2 and i have checked thru YaST that they are installed

Will Yast in Suse 8.2 ruin my system like on 8.1?

Hi: I am considering switching distributions to Debian or something that is more obedient and less pseudo-intelligent than Suse. I had horrible headaches with 8.1, that are still causing me trouble today after almost a year, since my wife just tried to install a new version of gaim. She clicked the downloaded RPM in Konq., got a button that said "Install with Yast" and when she clicked that and put in the root pw, Yast stupidly installed the gaim package from the installation CDs, not the downloaded one, AND Yast installed Suse's useless non-working mplayer on top of the vanilla mplayer that my wife spent hours figuring out how to compile by herself so she could play Windows media which the Suse mplayer cannot do. This same behavior was dealt with regarding Mozilla, since the Mozilla that came with Suse couldn't do Java, but trying to install the vanilla Mozilla that works resulted in a dependency battle with Yast, which tries to reinstall Mozilla every time we try to use Yast to install software. I generally use the CLI for this stuff, since I know Yast is stupid. Hopefully now my wife will have learned her lesson as well. Trouble is, when the distribution does this kind of stuff, it makes me unable to trust it in a very fundamental way. How can I be sure that ANY time I run Yast, it won't try to bludgeon my system with its unintelligence? I simply don't know, that is the answer. The point of this is that, I wonder if you can assure me that Suse 8.2 is any better, or will I go through the same frustration of finding that Suse did something to break most of the useful software, so I will want to upgrade it to the vanilla stuff on the net, then find myself in a battle with dependencies and Yast trying to reinstall things all the time? Walmart.com and SuSE 8.2....PREloaded. :)

I rec'd the email below from a teacher friend of mine in PA. __________________________ Hi Fred, I just looked on the Walmart.com site. Guess what. Their Microtels (what I have) are now coming with SuSE 8.2 already loaded instead of Mandrake. All of that trouble plus unused Mandrake and $85 of SuSE purchases later... aaarrrggghhhhhh! No wonder I'm gray! ________________________ If I check: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?cat=3951&dept=3944&product_id=22…, sure enough, Wallmart is now selling system with SuSE preloaded instead of Lindows. Can Suse 8.2 do these things, if not how?

Hi: My wife and I are considering trying the FTP installation of Suse 8.2 to evaluate it. Is this wise, or would it be better to get a CD version? If I get the cheap version, I can download and install packages from the pro version too, right? I want my Linux desktop OS to do the following, and to have the following versions of software: 1. OpenOffice 1.0.3.1 I think 8.2 has only 1.0.2. How can I upgrade it to 1.0.3.1 without breaking functionality? I mean, they have OpenOffice integrated into the menus, and sometimes things get screwy when you remove the Suse OO.org package and install from the OpenOffice.org vanilla binary installation package, which is likely what I will want to do. Can I expect any troubles? Should I use the vanilla or is there a Suse update package to 1.0.3.1? 2. Mozilla 1.3.1 with working Java, Javascript, Flash, and Realmedia plugins. What can I expect here? I see it comes with 1.2.1. So I will be wanting to upgrade to 1.3.1 by installing the package from mozilla.org. Should I use the vanilla or is there an update package to 1.3.1? 3. Mplayer with Windows media codecs that work, or Xine with the ability to play Windows media. My wife watches Thai TV in W.M format. Right now she uses VMware, but we want to get it to work on Linux. We have gotten mplayer to work on the command line on my machine, but on hers the sound is broke, and anyway these were compiled sources from the mplayer HQ, not from Suse. We couldn't get anything to work right with Suse 8.1 Will 8.2 work correctly out of the box (or from an FTP install), or will I have headaches trying to set up the vanilla mplayer 0.9 from the mplayer project? 4. There is also an mplayer plugin for Mozilla or Netscape. Has anyone gotten this to work in Suse 8.2? 5. We will want to install MS free True Type fonts, and a bunch of Thai fonts. This has always been an ordeal in the past, with some encodings not being set right when I used GUI tools like KDE font installer, so I had to do it by hand, which got things working right. How is font installation in the newest Suse8.2/KDE 3.1? 6. VMware Express. Since several versions ago it has been necessary to download and run an additional script to get VMware Express working with Suse. Is this still needed? Is it straightforward? Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory problems

Hey all, me again ;) SuSE 8.2, fresh install, all updates done. Downloaded the *FANTASTIC* Wolfenstein ET, and love it, except for the following niggles: 1) I can't get joystick support to work AT ALL in 8.2 [sound/gameport is a Via 8233 onboard]. It worked in 8.1, and 8.0, but it won't let me configure a joystick on the soundcard setup in YaST. If I try the joystick setup, it complains that I don't have a soundcard that supports joysticks [sorry for the paraphrasing, i am doing this from memory] and would I like to configure one. 2) My sound isn't working in ET. If I kill artsd I still get no sound. Any thoughts, hints, tips and suggestions are welcome. So please, heeeeelp :) BTW I *love* the new KDE screensavers :)))) Eye Candy MmMmMmMm

vanilla kernel w/o alsa

The SuSE kernel includes Alsa in the source, so recompiling doesn't mess with the sound. But if I compile a vanilla kernel, it does, because SuSE wants to load the alsa drivers for the soundcard. My soundcard is supported by the vanilla kernel drivers and works very well with that too. Is there a way to persuade Yast2 to use the kernel driver instead? When I click on options for the souncard (Ensoniq 1371 (?) based Creative SoundBlaster PCI 128), it tells me there's no options. Thanks Hans

Cox Communications begins filtering ports 25 and 80

Dear All, I just received this info from cox who is my cable internet provider: Dear Valued Customer, >Effective July 14, 2003, Cox Communications will begin filtering inbound traffic on ports 25 and 80 via cable modem connections. This will reduce the spread of viruses like Code Red, Nimda, and other viruses spread through Email. Filtering these ports will provide additional protection and improve performance for your Internet connection. This will not affect your ability to Send/Receive Email or access the Internet. This change only affects customers running an Email or Web Server, which is a very small percentage of customers.< I am not sure what this really means and if this is something to be pleased about or concerned about. duplicate e-mails

I'm still having trouble with fetchmail. It fetches mail from five different POP3 accounts and drops in in my /var/mail/hans. Some mails are duplicated. Sometimes it would be all the mail in one box, sometimes a few here and there. I've verified that the mails aren't on the servers in duplicate, and don't get downloaded twice either. It just somehow doubles when being delivered. Any clues as to why this is happening? man fetchmail wasn't a lot of help, google mostly gave me links to fetchmail source (?) Thanks Hans

Using YAST for network settings

Okay anyone able to help me understand why SuSE 8.2 Pro is making me reboot for the new settings to take effect when I use YAST to make IP and/or routing changes? I also get strange things when using the ifconfig and route commands where its not using the new settings right (so I end up manually changing the /etc/sysconfig/network/<interface> to the same settings rebooting and everything works great--so am I missing anything to clear the old settings so the new settings can take effect without a reboot--(I despise rebooting for IP changes) Thank You David Blomberg
