Illegal targeting from E.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.

Now and them I see strange log entries like this, coming from dns servers: Jun 12 13:27:48 nimrodel kernel: SuSE-FW-ILLEGAL-TARGET IN=ppp0 OUT= MAC= SRC=192.203.230.10 DST=81.41.200.5 LEN=124 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=44 ID=24563 PROTO=UDP SPT=53 DPT=1024 LEN=104 (repeated four times within one second) If I reverse search for the name, I find that: cer@nimrodel:~> host 192.203.230.10 10.230.203.192.in-addr.arpa. domain name pointer E.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. This port is marked as: # 1024/udp Reserved Now, what on earth (pardon me!) is that machine - a dns root server of all things - trying to send to that port? Should I open it on the firewall? My machine doesn't have a permanent network connection, but a V90 modem now and then. I have bind9 set up as a cache (forwarding queries to my ISP, then to the root servers if that fails), with SuSE 8.1. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Adding a TCP/IP printer to my suse 8.0 machine?

Hi, I have a suse 8.0 machine sitting on my tcp/ip network. I have been unable to get it to print via my novell server - novell printers so want to set it up to print via tcp/ip to a printer I have enabled for this. If I go into Printer Manager and add a new printer, select Windows TCP/IP, scan the network, add the printer ip address which is found no problem, enter the port and click next, it asks me for the correct driver, but there's nothing in there it is emtpy. I can select postscript driver but it gives an error saying no driver available or I can click Raw printer, which it accepts but when I goto test it says it cannot create a temp printer. How can I get the correct driver to appear in the box? Am I going a long way round doing this? Seems really hard to set printers up in linux.... Regards Damian Buckley

Clipboard

I sent this email to the galeon list as well Haia After updating to Galeon 1.3.5 (and Mozilla 1.4b) the clipboard is not working for these two programs anymore. ( I mention Mozilla as well, because the problem could be related) In my email program I copy a link to the clipboard and it works all right in any program , apart of these two. ( no paste comes up,all is grey) Anybody an idea what this is and how to fix it? ( Suse 8.2) -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. My holy cow is a penguin.

Printing Wizard

Howdy all, I am looking for a wizard or something similar to what windows XP (i know, i know, bad bad me!!!) has for a printing wizard. This allows you to lay out the pictures as wallet size, or 4x6's or 5x7's and so on, and lays them out on a page for you. The way I'm currently doing this in linux is by creating a new 8.5x11 file in the gimp, resizing all of the images I want to print, and cut and pasting them onto this new file. Does anyone know of _any_ linux program that can do something similar? Thanks for your help. Mike Sacco

networking help on new 8.2 install

Hi- I have just installed Suse 8.2 Pro on a new box and the networking doesn't seem to want to talk nicely with the other computers on the network. Right now I'd be happy just with talking to the internal network, let alone the outside. The NIC is an integrated realtek RTL-8139 hwinfo show that '8139too', and 'mii' are both active. 'mii-tool -vv' shows that "autonegotiation failed, but the link was ok." This is fine as my internal hub doesn't do autonegotiation 'mii-diag' reports that "i have link beat and everything is working OK" 'netstat -rn' and 'ifconfig eth0' both look fine. They are configured the same as the other 4 systems on my internal network(obviously the IP is different :) Ping does NOT work to any of the other systems (yes, icmp port is the same on all systems in /etc/services) Now, here comes the kicker: I ran 'etherreal' on the system that won't talk to the other boxes and it find all sorts of network traffic between my other internal systems and connections to the outside world (imap, ssh, http, icmp, ntp, and ftp) Anyone have any ideas what is going on? thanks, brian -- Brian Jackson, President Action Athletics "Sports Photography for You" http://www.actionathletics.com

Hi, Has anyone tried Promise SX4000 or SX6000 under SuSE? How well do they work, if at all? The Promise web site has drivers for 8.0, has anyone tried running them under 8.2? Performance?

Unresolved symbols message when running make modules_install

While running make modules_install from /usr/src/linux with SuSE 8.1 Professional, I saw pages of messages similar to: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/pcmcia/sedl_cs.o sedl_init_pcmcia What is really strange is the directory names suggest features I configure out of the kernel, such as pcmcia, scsi, usb, sound, etc Can anyone tell me how to get to the bottom of this and get it corrected ? FWIW, the make dep, make clean, make bzImage, and make modules all seem to have run without errors of any kind.
