i'm have them both installed and all the relevent files that go with them but even so when i try to compile some programs i get the error message imlib not installed or not found the same with glib some1 has mentioned that this could be that my system doesnt recognise that they are installed im running SuSE8.2 and i have checked thru YaST that they are installed

The packages imlib and glib only contain the files needed to run programs. If you want to compile programs that use them, you also need to install the -devel packages, in this case imlib-devel and glib-devel (or possibly imlib2-devel and glib2-devel, if you're compiling gnome2 programs)
