Setting up VLANs under SuSE 8.0

I've recently bought 2 Allied Telesyn AT-2930T cards for one of my linux servers. I decided that AT-2930T is the right type of card for me because it has VLAN support built-in. I have installed the driver from the CD but I discovered that there are no instructions however about setting up VLANs on Linux. I was thinking I will find some utility like Intel's ANS. But there was none. I've tried with vlan utility tool but it won't work with those NICs. My guess is that if the NICs are not configured correctly regarding VLAN parameters, it will not work. Not to add that using vlan-utils will render my "hardware-VLAN-aware-card" facility useless. I'm still waiting for a reply from AT support mail system. Any thoughts? Ideeas? What to do? Anyone had any frightful experiences like mine? Thank you, Silviu

MR Project and SuSE 8.0 : Problem

Hi ! I wanted to try the new version of MR Project but I was not able to : When I want to compile libproject.tar.gz, I get an error message that I don't have libgsf checking for glib-2.0 >= 2.0.4 libxml-2.0 >= 2.4.7 gobject-2.0 gmodule-2.0 libgsf-1 >= 1.4.0 ... Package libgsf-1 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libgsf-1.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'libgsf-1' found configure: error: Library requirements ( glib-2.0 >= 2.0.4 libxml-2.0 >= 2.4.7 gobject-2.0 gmodule-2.0 libgsf-1 >= 1.4.0 There is no libgsf for SuSE 8.0. I tried to rebuild the SuSE 8.1 package but I was not able. I tried to pick up the tarball but I need also to install bonobo and gnome-vfs So I cannot update my mrproject, does anyone have a clue on how to do this ?

Hi all, I have a SuSE 8.1 install and am think of upgrading to 8.2 by downloading the rpms and doing a network upgrade. Have many people done this and what are the areas to be careful of ? Thanks CPH

Forwarding mail to ISP

I have a cable modem/router setup locally(Motorola SBG1000). My SuSE server is setup to run fetchmail to download mail from the ISP then pipe it through Postfix then to Cyrus IMAPD. This is all working fine. Now I want to be able to use Postfix to forward the mail to the ISP's SMTP server. I read how to setup the canonical hashfile to change the address to fool the ISP's server in to thinking it came from a E-Mail program such as KMail. How do I setup the MX files using resolv.conf so Postfix knows where to send the mail. Or, is this needed? NeoFax

Mouse Pointer Has Changed

I have a strange little problem. Actually, it's not a problem but it is... well... "annoying". I upgraded qt3 from 3.1 to 3.2 (I'm running SuSE 8.2). Once I did that, the default mouse pointer in KDE changed. It used to point from lower right to upper left. After the upgrade, it point from lower left to upper right. The pointer still works, it just points in a different direction. After that, I also upgraded KDE from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2. Everything works fine. It's just the pointer that has changed. How can I change it back to the way it was before the upgrade? Any help is greatly appreciated. Rick

webmin will not connect

Dear All, I have the latest webmin installed on my Suse8. It works fine on my Opera7 except the file manager does not work in webmin on Opera7 or Netscape 4.79. I decided to try my luck with it on Mozilla and Netscape6 but it will not connect. How do I get Netscape6 to open my webmin? I have researched this already and so far the few others who had the same problem did not get any solutions. Any help here will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Marcia

Training SpamAssassin

(1) spamd is running as root. I know this means that the message filters are global (no problem, desktop system). I'm not sure what I need to do to use the Bayesian filters in this case, however. I'd guess that I run sa-learn against my spam / ham mailboxes, but is there anything else I need to do? (2) How often should I run sa-learn. I'm saving the spam / ham as it comes in. I'm assuming that after I run the messages against sa-learn that I should delete them and collect a new set to expand the training. The Source of the SCO Source (OT)

Hi All! It just hit me that there are other places where the UNIX source could have made it's way into Linux. I did tech support for SCO for four years (1990-1994, when it *really* was SCO). All the engineers and tech support people had access to the source code. When Caldera bought out their UNIX business, a lot of people lost their jobs. Knowing that they were about to loose their jobs, its possible that someone was really pissed off and passed the source code off to some Linux developer who was then tainted by the Caldera code, adding things to the Linux code unintentionally (maybe even intentionally). So, if the code that Caldera claims is their's is the original AT&T code and nothing they added after the acquisition, then there are dozens (if not hundreds) of people who had motive, opportunity and means to get that source code into the hand of someone who then tainted the Linux code. If Caldera's argument has any validity at all, then that sounds like a more plausable explanation than IBM passing it along. Also, since the Linux code is available in all of its incarnations, it would be very easy to figure out when the code in question was added to the Linux source. If there is propriatary code and it comes from a time before the Caldera-IBM agreement, then there is no way it came from IBM. Just a thought. Has anyone successfully got the kernel source installed on a 8.2 Personal install? If so, how? and where are the files? I have been unsuccesful with this matter. I select the option for the source files in Yast2 and it appears to install. But when I look in /usr/src the only directory I see listed is packages. Trying to run vmware-config.pl as root fails. I've tried pointed it to every directory that I can think of that the C header files that match the running kernel might be. "rpm -qa | grep kernel" reports no information, so it leads me to beleive that no source is even installed. I'm very puzzled! Could someone shed some light on this for me? Thanx!
