The problem I am having is that 3ware has a HTTP based management tool (3dm) that can send an e-mail when their is a problem. When 3dm attempts to send that e-mail in 8.2, it dies. major Samsung frequency problems

I just put my new Samsung SyncMaster 171MP on my 8.2 system. I have the graphics working okay, but the text mode doesn't work at all. When booting, I get the standard BIOS information right up to the Grub stage 2 bootloader info. One time I got the boot menu, the other time I didn't. I saw nothing of the boot sequence (booting into a custom kernel). Once it started X11, things were fine. However, booting into init level 3 leaves the screen dead. I got it configured by using a remote system to display yast. I don't like not being able to see the startup and shutdown messages, though, and I certainly don't like the fact that my VTs are unusable. When I say the screen is dead, I mean that my power light is orange, the screen is all black save for a message from the monitor that says: Sync. Out of Range: 46.4kHz / 43Hz It seems that in standard VGA text mode it must still be using the frequencies from my NEC monitor, but I don't know how to get it to change... Pointers, please. -Michael

The tale of a KDE/Nautilus Nightmare!!!!

Finally have a stable system back so I can get on here and hopefully find out what caused my recent nightmare? There are questions in here! I boot into init3 (v8.2) and load kde from 'startx' command. Yesterday, I went into gnome to set some fonts and styles/themes so that my gnome apps looked a bit better in kde (and I guess check it out a bit). I know the control centre runs from within kde, but here it crashes a lot doing that. Anyway, on next loading kde, it loads fine but then!!!!!!!!!, not one but a continuous stream of gnome desktops with nautilus file manager trying to load. An error box popped up (about icon view fault) and it just kept respawning at a rate of knots. It hogged the keyboard so I could not even Ctl-Alt-F2 or Ctl-Alt-Bkspce to find a way out. I could find no other way out after 10 minutes and dozens of these desktops popping up and falling over so I took the punt and powered off. I know under 8.1 you had to go into Nautilus setup and turn off a setting about drawing the desktop. I have no idea where that setting has gone, I certainly could not find anything like it. Even so, the old problem just drew the nautilus desktop (ie gnome icons) once. This was a rampaging runaway process of rapid fire file manager windows on top of the gnome desktop but still showing the kde panel (not working though). The other change I got caught out by was that you have to set a new variation on the kde 'save session' setting becuse the default appears to be to save the session and of course that meant the damn problem gets saved. I figured that out I think, you change the setting to restore a maually saved session only and then you get the 'save session' option near the logout menu item. On reboot, at init 3, I logged in and killed all directories dealing with kde, gnome, nautilus, metacity as well as .kderc; started X and have a standard kde desktop with problem gone. Luckily I don't tweak too much so a quick session in kde control centre and I'm travelling ok again. Sorry to just rave on! Can anyone give me a clue as to what happened here to cause this nightmare. At the moment I have simply sworn never to enter gnome again :-) And can anyone tell me where the Naultilus setting has gone? Could I have just killed the kde 'saved session'? Was there any other way to solve this - bearing in mind my hard disk was thrashing away and my keyboard and mouse were almost totally non-responsive? IMHO, whilst it is nice to have desktop choice in Linux, it really would be nice if they played together a little better. I'll stay with kde for now and maybe read up on Windowmaker or Fluxbox I think! Paul.

Storing XML docs in SQL DB?

Hello SuSE folkz, Does somebody know about possible solution to store XML formatted documents in SQL DB on Linux? Our company is in need for document storage server. We have Linux server with MySQL DB server and set of Perl applications and FCGI scripts to collect, analyze and plot engineering and process data right in a browser window. I think, that it's a good idea to store pre-formatted XML documents right in DB. The question is how to format and manage sich a collection of documents. Mickysoft has some XML documents management system. Is there something similar in Linux world? Thank you in advance for any ideas or sources of information. Alex

Restrict Users from Internet access

I have a multi-user box on which I wish to restrict internet access for certain users (teenagers). I am running 8.2 with internet connection through eth0, always connected. I think this relates to groups and possibly user ID numbers, but am unsure how to proceed. Any ideas? ppp need help

Hi I use to have wvdial dialing up my isp and it work good now something has happen and when it dials up the isp it goes thru dialing up the phone # and going thru the noise it does to make the onnect then comes back and saids ppp not enabled how can i enable this again like it was before thanks for any info Bob

Actually, if I recall correctly, AT&T stole a lot of the code used in System V from the BSD projects at the time, and then attempted to sue Berkley. It was ruled that too much of the AT&T Unix source code was no longer propietary and their case did not hold up in court. From that time on even MORE *BSD code has been entered into the System V Unix source. So who's to say that SCO didn't steal the code from Linux? gcc versions 3.2 and 2.95

Hello all, I'm running suse 8.1, and have finally got fed up with all those older applications that don't compile with gcc version 3. So, I'd like to install the older gcc 2.95, while keeping my current gcc 3.2. I've naively downloaded an old tarball, and tried to build it. Trouble is, version 3.2 won't build 2.95 (yes, that's exactly the problem I'm trying to fix!). I tried to build using: ./configure --program-suffix=-2.95 (that went okay) make install (that broke) I also tried: make bootstrap but that broke too. I won't include the errors - there were lots of them! The usual sort of thing, about deprecated syntax, etc. There must be lots of you out there who've managed to do this build? How did you do it? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Arthur

Differences between Evolution 1.2.4 and 1.3.92...?????

So, I downloaded and upgraded 1.3.92 from 1.2.4 and I have 1 question... What's the difference????? I mean other than it being incredibly slower and the fonts looking better than 1.2.4, I don't see anything. Did I not install something? I installed all the files from usr-local-bin. I assumed this would be a major upgrade....but boy was I let down. (no offense to James Ogley...this is directed at Ximian). Any insights would be great!
