YaST2 always in endless loop with "abandon all changes"

I have SuSE 8.2, all the latest updates and patches. Whatever I do with YaST (the GUI version, v2.7.30-1) it always goes into an endless loop of "abandon all changes" dialogs, regardsless what I was using YaST for and regardless of whether I click OK or cancel in the "abandon all changes" dialogs. It's even impossible to quit YaST. The problem doesn't occur with the text version. ????

8.2 cd defect?

Trying to install 8.2 I have been struggling for half a day. Of course safe setting, first trying to update my 8.1 and as that was not functioning a new install. Everytime it stalls at the time when the propositions are made for the software choices. It does not show anything even after a long wait. Trying to update via Yast in the 8.1 install does show the old software and the new software but proposes no new packages to update. So now I am suspecting a small defect on the first cd. Is there a method to check this, e.g checksum or so?

The new Evolution 1.3.92 on SuSE 8.2

There were some comments earlier today on the suse-linux list about the upgrade to Evolution (1.3.92) that is available from usr-local-bin. (BTW thanks James) I could not resist after hearing about it, so I installed Evo 1.3.92 on my copy of SuSE 8.2 and have quickly noticed the following: - speed on my system (AMD 1800; KDE 3.1.2 and the latest QT fix) is very similar to the Evo 1.2.4 that was replaced. The new Evo may be a little more responsive, but it is definitely not slower. - fonts are MUCH CLEANER. - the overall visual display is a little cleaner with many small improvements. - Calendar appears to be non-functioning. This is a big downer. When I click on Summary my upcoming appointments are shown, but when I click on Calendar (day, week or month) there is nothing shown. Is something missing in the usr-local-bin version? - Contacts has an almost big improvement in the handling of web pages and then a corresponding glitch. Contacts used to merely record the web pages but to go to a web page you would need to copy the web address to your browser. With Evo 1.3.92 there is a button next to the web address in the contact editor that if clicked brings up Moz with the web page. This is a nice feature, the problem is that none of the web pages that I had recorded in Evo 1.2.4 have been saved to Evo 1.3.92. Further, if a manually add a web address in the contact editor and then save the new contact information the web is not saved in the contact editor. - in Contact information I had extensively modified the Categories to be able to sort my contacts on such things as my contacts my wife's contacts company contacts company shareholders company suppliers etc. these categories are lost on the upgrade from 1.2.4 - the keyboard shortcut that I use the most in reading email is no longer working. The shortcut is that new mail is sorted as most recent at the bottom and then when I read mail I can either type "]" which keeps the email that was read and then brings up the next unread email OR I would click "delete" and the read email was deleted and the next unread email is viewed. For un-kept email the second option allowed me to do 2 actions with 1 keystroke (delete and view next message). This no longer works with 1.3.92. Overall and visually I like where Evo is headed with the next upgrade. On the practical side there are too many glitches for me to use 1.3.92 in a working environment. This is after about one-half hour with the new Evo. Rather than tweaking and trying to fix I will be moving back to Evo 1.2.4 YMMV -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford(a)telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Problems w/ Via 8233 Sound card (SuSE 8.1/2)

Hi, I'm currently running SuSE 8.2 on a HP Pavilion 734n. I've tried to use the sound card (a Via Avance '97) under both 8.1 & 8.2 with the same results. YaST detects and configures my sound card, however whenever I try to play any sound (like the test sound under the sound card config) the system will play about the first second of the sound and then loop for about a minute. I tried loading Mandrake on the system and the sound worked properly. However the modules.conf file specifid the device as snd-via82cxxx_audio instead of the snd-via8233 which SuSE specifies. There is no snd-via82cxxx_audio driver in /lib/moduels (there is a via82cxxx_audio driver though). I am rather new at dealing with modules etc... any advice would be appreciated. I've included the (hopefully) relevant portions of my modules.conf and output from 'lsmod'. One last thing is that I do not appear to have a /dev/pcm enty -- I thought that this was needed. Haia I have seen this several times on this list """ACPI=off""". ( saw it on the installation disk as well). Can somebody tell me what the advantages are and why should I do this ? -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. My holy cow is a penguin.

recursive nautilus launches

Ok I'm using kde I don't want gnome. I made the mistake of trying to open help in grip. Nautilus now launches recursively and sucks up all the CPU How do I stop this behavior Gary Ernst

Yast2 online update

When I try to open online update the module proceeds to the message "getting available server list from suse.com.de...." and then crashes. Where do I go to try to fix this? Should I re-install yast2 from the CD's? 8.0 system. Last night when I was trying online update I got a series of error messages referring to either corrupted files (update files) or GPG (??) not correct. Network does work as I can connect to web. Thanks for any suggestions. Richard

Just a heads up for those who have updated to a later qt3 and found out it causes a problem with YaST Install and Remove module. I updated the other night with apt-get/Synaptic, and had the suse-people in my source.list, and there was a qt3-3.2.0b1 update available. This fixes the YaST issue. I realize this is a beta version, but wanted to pass on the good news. It has worked well for me so far. BTW, is there any way to figure out who put out the package?
