SysV editor wont start after upgrade to kde 3.1.2

I just upgraded to the latest qt, kde, and all via apt. Now the Sysv-init editor will not come up. I have tried to reinstall it but still it wont fire up. I get the kdesu login but after the password is typed it simply goes away. Anyone else with this problem? Richard

what is a good list management software?

hello, I have a friend that has a real estate marketing business. He has huge lists of emails that he sends out newsletters to on a regular basis. He basically needs a list manager to help with the checking or verifying of the email accounts, automating list management when emails get returned as bad or unknown emails, also to automate when a person wants to unsubscribe. I looked at a few websites like lsoft.com and ima.com majordomo doesn't seem like it's suited to this...or at least that's my impression. Is this correct? Thanks, Oskar ps. sorry for being a bit off topic...but I do regard this list as having very knowledgeable people ...so I am interested to see what recommendations come from this.

NFS causing network lockups on 8.1 (pro)

I'm noticing a problem with NFS on my SuSE 8.1 Pro server. Seems she's locking up network functions. Now system isn't hard locked. I do have some (very very slow) keyboard use. However attempts to shell in timeout, http, ftp, smtp, and pop3 all time out. At first I thought perhaps it was a faulty chipset and disabled DMA. THen I figured perhaps it's fragged filesystem. So I've re-installed and restored from backups the files needed and set her off again. No go. Now, I've disabled DMA and let her run. She's just locked up AGAIN! Anyone else out there having this trouble? Network card is fine (new) tests well and was running great in other box. I'm using the kernel NFS server exporting two directory trees /home /storage Yes I have updated it via YOU... Any thoughts? I LOVE NFS but I ain't gonna run it if she's gonna hard lock during heavy use. I'm using sftp to get/put files till I get this resolved... kdeinit could not launch...

Usually things work great but sometimes when I select a file (say /etc/fstab) in order to edit it, an error requestor will pop up stating "kdeinit could not launch kwrite" Is there some way to get around this, whats really happening. The system isn't under great load, I'm the only user, cpu use is low. It's really frustrating. Sometimes (given enough time) the problem will fix itself. Other times I don't feel like waiting so I end up restarting X. I did try starting another session and logging in as root and everything worked as I wanted there. But I'd rather not be doing a full login as root just to edit a couple of files. Ideas?, Where to look? As a diversionary question, why doesn't kde remember my password for programs run "kdesu" any more? Setting up X on a Dell CPx Laptop

Hi folks, wondering if anyone can help me. I have just got a Dell CPx laptop and have tried to get 8.2 setup on it (worked fine on an older laptop), but I can't get X working. The machine has an ATI M1 card in it, but the default installation wouldn't make it work at anything over 800x600 and as a VESA monitor. I've scoured the net and not come up with anything of much help. I've booted inetd 3 and tried running SaX2, but that just gives me a blank screen until I kill it. HELP please, this is very frustrating. Thanks in advance. Peter Nunn. Suse 8.1 ftp install

I'm attempting to install SuSE 8.1 through ftp on a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop with a PCMCIA ethernet card. The ftp server IP address is 217.9.113.66 and the path is /pub/suse/i386/8.1/. After a while, the install fails with a red box saying "There has been an installation error". I had a hunch that the bios settings might have interfered with the download, especially the APM settings so I went in and disabled those I thought would have, but I still get the installation error message. Any ideas?
