Remote Connection

Is there a way to remove the confirmation when someone connects via remote desktop? If I connect from work I have to have someone at home click on "control mouse & keyboard" and accept connection. Is there a way to make it automatically connect. Sorry for all the questions :) Thanks... -Jason

Sharing Modem Connected to server

Hi Friends, I have a LAN with SUSE 8.2-Samba at server and about 10 Windows Nodes connected to it. The server has a modem attached to it. The Server is acting as PDC & Database Server. Delphi application is Running on Nodes and depending on User input that application need to establish dial-up connection with similar setup at different locations. The Dial up Telephone Number, User ID, Password are user inputs at Delphi application. Can Delphi application Dynamically accept these parameters and using Centrally attached modem Connect to respective site ? If yes how can I do that Thanks Best Regards R. S. Patil

Pysol dies

Hi Guys, Well you Pysol fanatics have got me interested! I found Pysol via YAST2 on SUSE 8.2 and installed it w/o probs. It starts OK and looks cool. But whenever the mouse cursor touches the tool bar it 'winks' out of existance. Also dies if I strike the 'D' key for a new deal. I found the latest vers (-194) at the Pysol homepage but it beheaves the same way. The same failure observed on another 8.2 machine. Can anyone assist? I'm in need of gnome-themes-extras package to install ulb-gnome. The problem is is that it doesn't appear to be on the CD's. gnome-themes is but not "-extras" any ideas, and is something like this available via apt-get. If so how would I ask for it.. "apt-get install gnome-themes-extras"? Thanks..

I am trying to install a newsletter program called PHPLetterIt2 that is from a German company. It looks to be a great program, but the brief installation instructions are in German (although the program supports English). The install does not seem as intuitive as some I've done in the past on my server (PHPNuke, phpESP, etc.). I was wondering if someone could assist with the install instructions. USB CD burner hotplug

I just got an NEC 1300A CD-RW/DV±RW drive in a USB enclosure. When I plug the device into a USB port and power it up, the system says: Oct 30 14:00:26 brutus kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:04.3-2.1, assigned address 3 Oct 30 14:00:26 brutus kernel: usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x402/0x5621) is not claimed by any active driver. Oct 30 14:00:26 brutus kernel: usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 2, frame# 278 Oct 30 14:00:26 brutus kernel: hub.c: usb_hub_port_status (2) failed (err = -84) So it doesn't know what driver to load. If I manually do modprobe usb-storage the drive is recognized and mounted right away. But shouldn't the system (8.2Pro kernel 2.4.20) automatically know that it's a storage device? I figure there needs to be an entry in usb.distmap in /etc/hotplug, but I can't find any info about how to construct an entry for a device that's not already present in the file. Where can I find that info? Thanks! -- -M

Konq and Mozilla/Firebird

I'm fairly new to KDE, only used it briefly back in RH 5.1 or sometime around there. Well I'm using Konq as my browser and it's extremely slow rendering pages off the web compaired to Mozilla/Firebird. Is there a way to speed things up in Konq? It takes Konq two or three times as long to render a page as Mozilla/Firebird. Any suggestions? I'm not bashing or anything just tring to make Konq keep up with the others. I want to keep everything I use as KDE native because I don't like using GNOME based software in KDE since they generally don't match, looks wise. Thanks.. Jason

Cdrecord 2.00.3 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling readcd 2.00.3 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1987, 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling What is generally the best tool/options to clone an ISO 9660 disk? It holds an installable WINDOWS program. I tried various options to cdrecord and readcd but the resultant image is not installable. I would like to read the image raw from the CD to a disk image and then write it to a CDR. Is there anywhere is Yast2 to change the initial splash screen size to 1280x1024? How about the initial GRUB boot menu? What VGA mode is this? To Charles Phillip Chan: Followed your instructions, and found my printer had already been installed using your method. That being the case, I am back to square one, because it still prints off to the right with no word wrap and 2 to 3 inches in from the left. Now, that should get the accusers of whining off my back, this printer and SuSe 8.2 nor ver.9 will work together. If there is something wrong it is with Suse, as I use the same printer with OpenOffice 1.1 in Windows, successfully!

SUSE 9.0 Grub message Geom Error after installation/upgrade of basic system(SOLVED)

For anyone who has a Compaq POS Presario 1260 and is trying to upgrade or install SUSE 9.0, you might get the error message in the subject above. There is some rather cryptic language in the Admin Guide as well as on the net in various places but nothing that simply tells you that the problem may be how your BIOS plays with Large drives ie LBA. After futzing with this problem for several hours, I found a reference in the SDB on Grub hanging when booting from SCSI harddrive. Even though mine is IDE the article indicated the problem could be the way the BIOS tells Grub about the LBA addressing. So I checked what the Compaq bios sets for LBA. It gives you two choices, Other or Dos. Of course this selection had been OTHER since SuSE 7.0 and worked fine til now! The cure was to go into the BIOS and change the selection for large drives from OTHER to DOS. Now if they have fixed the DMA wont enable problem . . . . Hopefully this message may save someone else lots of frustration and allow you to upgrade your machine as I wanted to do. Richard

Anyone else have a problem with NOT having all of the listings under your menus? I checked with edit, and there's a lot listed there than don't show up on the desktop. Any fix? Graphical theme during bootup

Hey list. I recently migrated from Mandrake to SuSE 9.0 and all is working like a charm! I have got one minor detail that I would like fixed if possible. I know that in SuSE 8.2 (as well as in Mandrake) it had a graphical theme that showed boot up info instead of just having a black background. Same theme was used when switching to a console window (CTRL+ALT+F*). My question is then: Has this been removed or just not installed/used by default, and if so how do I enable it? TIA, Kasper

CD R/W suddenly stops working

When she left clicks to play a CD she gets an error message: I/O error; Device not mounted, could not determine file system and none was specified. We've tried everything we can think of. She's looked at the configurations and can't see anything wrong (certainly nothing obvious to her). So we suggested deleting the CD R/W and starting over. Should be a quick and simple reinstall, right? Wrong. For example, we thought that perhaps, somehow the icon on the desktop had lost its linkage to the CD so we suggested deleting the icon and creating a new one. But she can't seem to remove the existing CD R/W icon from her desktop. When she right clicks on the icon and tries to delete there is no delete option. The only options she gets are: open copy add to bookmarks open with.... copy to public folder mount create data cd with K3b copy to edit file type... properties Nothing else is available with a right click. Left click tries to start the CD R/W which leads to I/O error, etc. In addition, she cannot drag the icon to the trash bin. It won't go there. :o) Any ideas on how to get her CD R/W running again with or without a reinstall of the CD? Your suggestions are welcome. Thx. :o) Gil

dvd burning with suse 9.0

Im using a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A and suse 9.0. Both with k3b and by manually using growisofs I am not able to burn a DVD susccesfully. That is, I can burn a test DVD with some data (300M orso) , but when trying to burn a full dvd (4G in this case) the dvd burning process dies around 11%. The kernel log complains about hdc irq timeouts and related fun. Any clues ? The box is brand new, and I did check the cabling .. SuSE Linux 9 Update has no support key

On the box it says that I have some free support, however I don't, as there is no support number on my CD wallet. Has anybody else not got a support key? I am going to email SuSE with my order number etc and tell them I haven't got a number. I odered it direct from SuSE, so maybe someone just forgot to stick one on. thanks George

Hey SuSE Group; I have seen several improvement in 9 over 8.2. However, a new error is coming from /etc/sysconfig/sane about /usr/X11R6/bin/scanimage. It should be /usr/bin/scanimage. Also "ytree" is still wrong. It is showng "?" at the beginings of all files. [SLE] Time Computers

Hi, Well I got 8.2 installed, but can only get into 640x480 res no matter what I do. I downloaded the ATI drivers for xFree 4.3, and that made thing real bad, as I could not get into any graphical environment at all. I have had to re-install 8.2 to put it back. I have had a look at some of the older posts on the ATI 9200 card, and am a bit confused about rebuilding the kernel to suit this card? Is there any simple instructions for getting this card working. Are there any drivers that work apart from the ATI ones? Would it be better to d/l SuSE 9.0 and try that? Having done a fresh 9.0 install on one of my boxes at home, I finally bit the bullet, rsync'd 8.2 on the laptop HD over to the other 9.0 box and decided to do an upgrade on my work laptop (Fujitsu S4546) that amongst lots of other work stuff, has crossover office 2.1.0 supporting MS Office, Lotus Notes etc. Gladly it all went fine, leaving my configs totally intact, even the grub menu.lst and I'm running on the 2.4.23-pre8 kernel I was running on under 8.2. I still have one problem that SuSE gave up trying to find/fix on 8.2, in order for YaST to work, the external floppy drive needs to be connected, otherwise YaST hangs when you try to do anything. With the floppy connected, it searches the floppy first before carrying on normally --- livable with however. So far this is the smoothest upgrade I've encountered on SuSE, with previous ones, something or other refused to work properly, forcing a fresh build. Regards Sid.

I have also just setup cyrus-imap at home It gives the appearance of working using "plain" authentication. The documentation for cyrus-imap & cyrus-sasl show that sasl is an auth system independent of shell accounts. Alternative install?

Hello all, Since I can't get the SuSE CD's to boot on my laptop (HP ze4125), I was wondering if there is another way to get SuSE up and running. I was thinking I could recreate the cd1 boot disk with a recompiled kernel. I'm I thinking too simply? Anybody with experience here? Do you have any other tips? I would love to avoid making a new boot disk if possible. A couple things: -No, I don't have a floppy drive. -8.2 worked fine -I now have XP and Fedora Core Beta installed (--install from XP?--) -I have access to NFS server (--network install?--) Thanks in advance. SuSE 9.0 alsa bug

Anyone know why my alsa is choppy? I tested OSS and it was fine. I was running SuSE 8.2 before and did not have this problem. Any fast fix for this? I have attached the modules.conf from 9.0. Hi Paul First of all, grab your towel and don't panic. Then look at the error-log, what does it say? Maybe there's another error, because inappropriate ioctl for device means that an io-device is not appropriate for the configured purpose (e.g. a read-only filesystem for logfiles or a 100% full fs, reading from stdout, writing stdin, et al). External monitor image smeared

Just upgraded my Dell Inspiron 8100 from 8.1 to 8.2. Now if I connect a monitor to the external port I get a grossly enlarged and smeared image that I can only see a small part of. This only effects the external monitor. The lcd on the laptop remains unchanged. Video care is Nvidia GeForce2 go. Don't know how to tell what driver it is using, but tried to install Nvidia 4496 driver but couldn't. Someone please steer me in the right direction. Duane attached is the install log if that helps

Network browser in SuSE 9.0

When I try the desktop local network on SuSE 9.0, I get an error that it there is no network, however, I have setup the network card and the smb client. I can login with the smb client also, Win2k Network BTW. Any suggestions on how to get it to work? Am I missing some other configuration? Art

Kopete crash

HI All, My server is located in San Diego CA. We had to yank the server from the building it was in because of the threat of fire... The fire was one street over!! Fortunatlely the SDFD was able to ward off the flames and the building was saved.. After plugging our server back in and trying to start apache ... I am receiving the following error: Starting httpd [ Mailman PHP4 ]stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device ..failed I don't understand... nothing has changed! I have never received this error before?? Note: I have not logged in from the machine itself... only through webmin... sendmail works, qpopper works... Any ideas? Paul

SOLVED!! unable to boot HP ze4125 laptop with SuSE 9

Hi all, Just want to shortly explained how I got SuSE 9 installed on my HP ze4125 pavilion laptop. The problem: Unable to get past welcome screen while trying to boot. The solution: Copy contents of DVD or CDs onto NFS server as described in the SuSE handbook. Then boot from 8.2 install disk (The 20mb net install disks available for free download will do.), choose manual install, load network device module, choose the NFS install method, enter the share on the server that includes the disk(s) you copied over and then everything is like usual except that this method installs quicker. Hello, Has anyone managed to get this wonderful card working under Suse? The clever guys at linuxtv.org have, but all of their instructions are based around vanilla kernel builds. I spent about a week with 8.2 constantly recompiling this and that without a great deal of success - 9 has the km_v4l2 package which seems to include all the bits that they want you to patch on to a vanilla. Am I right in thinking that for the packages in /usr/src/kernel-modules you just enter each sub package then make && make install them? dvb-kernel gives me lots of unresolved symbols if i do this & end up with two different versions of bttv.o hanging about. In plain it doesn't work! Any ideas? So much trouble just to watch tv! Robin

Largefile support on SUSE

Hi, I have Suse 7.3 with kernel 2.4.19 compiled by my own, and i want to create a 5GB file. I use the command: dd if=/dev/zero of=largefile bs=1024k count=5120 and this is the answer that i get: dd: writing `largefile': File too large 2049+0 records in 2048+0 records out ls -h 2.0G largefile I try as root and as normal user. Network card reconfig fails in YAST on SUSE 9.0

Hi All, Just installed 9.0 and noticed something strange when trying to reconfigure a nic card using YAST. If you go into the control center -> yast modules -> network, and select change your currently configured card, it will bring you to the page to change the settings but won't allow you to do anything. You can't erase or type anything new in the config fields. I've experienced this on 2 SUSE 9.0 machines which leads me to think it's a bug? Anyone else seen this? Nautilus crashes in /home and /root

SuSE-list, I hope you can help me finding an answer or two to a question I have. Please let me know if it already has been answered or if it's old or anything else inapropriate. I run SuSE Pro 9.0 and Gnome. When I try to display "Properties" of any subfolder, hidden or not hidden, in /home as user or in /root as root, Nautilus crashes -- it splashes a dialog where I can choose to either close the program or submit a bug-report, and after that Nautilus re-appears again as if nothing has happened. Showing "Properties" of any file, hidden or not hidden, works fine both as user and root. And to my knowledge it works fine showing "Properties" of any file or folder in any other folder than /home or /root. How can this be? Any ideas? Yours, Lars Norén

printing in Linux lacking?

Though I probably have a long way to go, I have learned a lot about SuSE Linux since first trying in 1999. I currently have configured 8.0 at home with Mozilla and Open Office. Even printing seemed to work ok in Open Office which amazed me. While printing did work without any trouble, I was very disappointed in the quality and then I realized that something very important seems to be missing from Linux printing. In Windows printing, the printer options give me choices for print quality and even paper type. For printing pictures on photo paper, I can select the photo paper type and best quality. Am I missing something or is this completely missing in Linux? How can I print a good quality photo on photo paper? Damon Register

I'm going to do a fresh install of 9 from 8.2. In doing so, I'd like to minimize my FUBAR time by listing all the rpms I currently have installed. Now, I know I can do this in Synaptic, YAST, and Kpackage, but how can I list them so that I can print them out on a printer? BTW, The first fresh install I've done was about 2 years ago. Centrino and SuSE 9.0

Hello all, Have the support issues for Intel Centrino been worked out with Linux? I tried to google for info but everything I find is at least 6 months old. I signed the petition just in case. The reason I am asking is, we are looking at purchasing two new laptops at work. The problem I am running into is everyone is pushing Centrino. My IBM, DELL and HP reps are all telling me that Centrino is the way to go. The two people using the laptops will be using Windows XP and SuSE 9.0 in a dual boot configuration. My administrator will be switching back and forth since this will be his first exposure to Linux. I plan to use wine and run XP only when I need to get to Photoshop. Both machines will be run in a Wireless networking environment. If the issues haven't been resolved, I suppose we will have to spend a little extra to get Pentium 4s. I would much rather have wireless built in, but only if it works well with Linux. Thanks for your time. -=Thinker

java very slow on 9.0

It is a problem with Java2 on SuSE 9.0. It is really slow and takes a huge amount of memory. Tried in Konqueror - takes about 6 minutes to open an simple java applet, memory usage by java_vm is about 230 MB (i have 256 MB ram and 512 swap). With mozilla, firebird, galeon - takes 7-10 minutes, sometimes forever... memory usage the same. With Opera - opens in 2-3 seconds, memory usage almost the same. Have tried with many different java installations, no difference. ain

Delayed delivery from postfix to cyrus

Hi all, During the last days our local mailserver suddenly started to behave strangly, as incoming mails aren't delivered. Googling around the whole days unfortunately didn't lead to any solution. Any help from your side is appreciated! I have sent this mail to suse-imap-e(a)suse.com, too. People receiving it twice might discard on version, thanks! ;-) The configuration is quite simple: postfix -> cyrus. Used packages are postfix-2.0.6-14, cyrus-imapd-2.1.12-34, cyrus-sasl2-2.1.12-31, db-4.0.14-249 and the box is based on SuSE 8.2. As postfix and cyrus were started after executing the the backup script (like every night before), the next incoming mail was bounced due to relay while delivering to cyrus. [SLE] Help : Matrox G450 not detected by SuSE 9.0

Yes SuSe 9.0 Pro is available in France. I installed it but : My Matrox G450 is detected as a G400. When I try to change to G450 with SaX2, I get an error message : /dev/apm_bios couldn't be open ! This device exists ! I copied my file XF86Config from SuSE 8.2 to SuSE 9.0 and reboot. The card is detected, DRM works. But if I run SaX2 test the system freezes ! There seems to be a bug in SaX2, even after the available upgrade. Did someone meet the problem ? I'll report to SuSE. Thanks for your help. Michel.

cyrus / ldap / authentication whining

I've tried now for several weeks to get cyrus-imap working and was making some really impressive progress. Unfortunately I've kind of hit a wall. I was never able to get the authentication working 100% on anything other than pam-->/etc/passwd. Not wanted to have an account for everyone using this mail server I tried to configure it for sasldb2 as the basis of authentication but ran into a brick wall getting sieveshell to authenticate. I was able to get sieveshell to authenticate under the pam-->/etc/passwd authentication model, but it was inconsistent which really pissed me off. I have not been able to find anything to suggest I'm doing anything slightly wrong and can only conclude that the sieveshell code is flawed at this point. Unfortunately there isn't much documentation on sieveshell or cyrus-imap in general. So, I removed the imapd.conf configuration for sasldb2 and reverted everything back to saslauthd / pam. So, seeing as this wasn't getting me anywhere and I might have more luck someplace else, I started to dabble with LDAP authentication and installed all the packages. At this point I should mention that I was still having inconsistencies on the sieveshell authentication even using /etc/passwd as the source. Last night I ran into a rather haunting error. I created an ldif file and tried to add it to the openldap server using 'ldapadd -a foo.ldif' The result in the logs... It can't authenticate because it can't find the file /etc/sasldb2. That didn't exist before I started into all this sasldb2 stuff and it doesn't exist now. Any bets on just how screwed up is my authentication model is at this point? I can reboot/login well enough, but the problem persists. According to some searches in sysconfig directories and the /etc directory I can't find anything out of place that mentions sasldb. So, at this point I'm looking at probably just reinstalling everything from scratch and hoping that somehow this gets sorted out in the process. I'm fairly disappointed in the level of documentation available for cyrus-imap. Does anyone know of another maildir compatable imap server?

Firewire drive locks up my computer

Hey SuSErs, I got my external Firewire drive mounted yesterday, but since then, I've notice that when I try to copy or delete big amounts of data from/to the drive it locks up my computer. For example, later last night I was listening to the MP3's from that drive and deleting a lot of junk that was on other directories of the same drive. I was using also Xchat , Kmail and edonkey... all this at once... and then my computer did lock up. :( Today I got the same issue (lock up) but with less processes running, I was trying to delete a big directory from the drive... I don't think this is normal, am I wrong? I added this line to fstab, and SuSE loads my drive fine... /dev/sda1 /firewire auto rw,noauto,user,exec 0 0 I'm running this linux box with a PIII 600, 128RAM, Kernel 2.4.20-4GB and SuSE 8.2 Pro. The drive is using fat32 and before yesterday it was only used with Windoze. Any ideas on what could be wrong? lack of power from my linux box? lack of memory? File system? I would greatly appreciate your comments/suggestions. I've Googled like crazy, but can't find any actionable info regarding configuring this kernel driver. Basically I've got a DPT SCSI controller PM2865U3 that works great with Windows 2000 and SuSE Linux Pro 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2. But SuSE Linux 9.0 Professional is misreading the number of SCSI drives attached to the controller (it sees the first SCSI drive as two drives!) and so the 9.0 installation fails. It even sees two SCSI drives if I remove all but the first SCSI drive! I've of course checked termination, terminating power, swapped drive IDs, and even replaced the cable to no avail. A fresh test install of 8.1 in any configuration goes fine. But 9.0 freaks. <sigh> Ideas? Thanks! Mark L. Hello I have a problem in SuSE 8.2, treatment of using pgsql (it programs graph to be connected to the postgres) but it presents me the following error: "Error connecting to the server: could not connect to server; refused connection. Is the server runnig on host 127.0.0.1 and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? " The connection is refused because the port is not enabled 5432. The service postgres this activated. SOUND RECORDING -- Problems

Dylan, Thanks for the help. It got me to look more carefully. I now know that SuSE v8.0, v8.1 and v8.2 were installing correctly to allow for sound recording. The problem was me not using the software correctly. Am now eating lots of humble pie. I can now record on both of my Athlon boxes. Have made the following observations: 1. On board sound on the Gigabyte GA-7DXR mobo ('Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI128') is OK with acceptable background noise level. Unable to set up games controller on this box. 2. On board sound on the Gigabyte 7-VA mobo (Realtek ALC650) works, but with an unaccepably high background noise level (ca -40 dB). I've since disabled the on board sound and installed a PCI Sound Blaster Live! 5.1. This separate sound card has a much lower backgound noise level (ca -70 to -80 dB) and also allowed me for the first time to enable my games controller under Linux. YAST2 had no trouble setting up this card. So we've solved two problems at once! Thanks again Ken Hough

I am trying to compile a program but it says that gtk+-devel >= 1.2.7 is needed by easytag-0.30-1 I've just installed gtk2-devel-2.2.3-27 What adjustments do I need to make in order to get it to work? (I think that gtk2 is the SUSE equivalent for gtk+ but you can correct me if I'm wrong). Thanks Eddie

I have a Canon BJC 4000, and it prints... well, acceptable. The Canon company does not support Linux, neither actively nor passively (ie, they does not suply programming info to the developers). Thus, SuSE can not say that they support their hardware. What we have has been donde by reverse engineering, I understand. Nevertheles, my Canon works. I have some problems, because the drivers are imperfect (one prints wonderfull and fast text, but horrible unusable photos, the other (gimp) prints correctly but slowly). But reading the manual - my printer is old and has a real paper manual of 160 pages, including some programming info - states that the printer can be used as an Epson LQ-2550 as well. I will try this out soon. I guess that in your case - I don't really know your model - it will also emulate some other epson printer , and then your manual should say so. Meanwhile you could use CUPS (browse to http://localhost:631/) and try to adjust your printer configuration. There is a test page there: try it, see if it comes out correctly or not. I running a sendmail relaying mail server under SuSE 7.2 and it works great. However, a growing number of places are only accepting mail connections from registered servers so I've had to start relaying some outgoing mail via my ISP. I'm using /etc/mail/mailertable to relay outgoing mail via my ISPs smtp server. My mailertable looks like this: supanet.com smtp:smtp.ntlworld.com aol.com smtp:smtp.ntlworld.com netscape.net smtp:smtp.ntlworld.com tiscali.co.uk smtp:smtp.ntlworld.com excite.com smtp:smtp.ntlworld.com Connections to all other addresses go direct. I add to the mailertable each time I have trouble sending to particular address. This has worked so far. Unfortunately my ISP is NTL and their mail servers are frequently screwed and it can take anything up to 40 or 50 attempts to actually get outgoing e-mail to send. I have my domain hosted by One and One and they also provide an smtp relaying host but it uses account/password authentication. Is is possible to configure sendmail to work with the One and One smtp host ? If so, could anyone point me in the direction of a suitable howto ? Hi, My network gets IP from server (DHCP), eg. 141.183.155.99 with Subnet 255.255.248.0 The problem is, 1. I can ping to outside IP, eg. 141.183.101.55 2. BUT I can't ping to same Subnet, eg. 141.183.155.100 Is there anything I miss out? Thx,

Has anyone any informatin regarding the use of dbmail under SuSE? This is a imap/pop server that uses a database to store the email. It looks like an excellent alternative to cyrus-imap (too complex) and uw-imap (no maildir support) to provide a high performance mail server.

[suse-kde] Konqueror Can't Handle HTML?

Konqueror seems to have suddenly lost the plot. Now when I try to open an html link it displays a message asking if I want open or save the file, but if I select open it displays the following nonsense: "There appears to be a configuration error. You have associated Konqueror with text/html, but it can't handle this file type." I don't recall changing any file associations or other configurations recently, but obviously I must have done something to upset Konqueror. Can anyone offer any suggestions where I should start looking to resolve Konqueror's memory loss? Suse 8.2 still slow

Dear All, I thought my problems were over, but not so. I tried to delete a html document and my system will not open it or delete it. Then everything is hung up when I try. I had to upgrade my kernel to use usb. It worked fine for 2 weeks. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks. Marcia

YOU problem and Intel 82845G

hi i've installed a Suse 8.2 Pro .. i'm not able to run YOU. I can surf trought web pages, read mails and so on..so my internet connection is ok (http and ftp) ..i'm behind a proxy server..but other machines running Suse are able to connect to YOU to update the system. This is the error message that appears: ERROR(Media error) Unable to get './i386/update/8.2/patches/directory/.3' or to read the directory (Empty reply from server) What does it mean?..what can i do? Another question :) the machine is an IBM Netvista with Intel integrated graphic card i830 or i845..but it is impossible for me to configure X...does someone already configure it correctly? Setting the time via Samba on Win2000

Dear Suse Group, I have a SuSE8.1 box which is acting as a PDC server. Currently all Win9X boxes logon to the domain and map all network drives via a logon.bat that is executed on authentication of the user. Although all the Win9X PCs adjust their clock through the command NET TIME etc stated in the logon.bat there is one PC which runs Win2000 and simply doesn't do that!! Although all the other commands of the logon.bat are executed succesfully, the clock of the Win2000 PC does not change via the logon.bat. Can someone please give me some ideas regarding this issue? 8.2 was fast now slow

Dear ALL, Last week just before a trip I was using Mozilla as usual and instead of shutting down my computer as I usually do I left it on and most things open I believe for a couple of hours. When I went back nothing would shut down correctly. It would just take forever. Ever since I cannot even open my cdrom and it takes forever to open my Windows C drive which is on the desktop. I get and input/output error when I try to open my cdrom. I have an Athlon xp 1600+ 512 megs of ram 60 gigs of harddrive and I did upgrade the kernel a couple of weeks ago but all was working well and fast in fact faster than before. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Marcia

Gimp vs. Sane problem James?

Hi SuSE people, Recently did an upgrade with apt-get. I foolishly allowed Sane & ImageMagick to be uninstalled, thinking I would just reinstall them later. One of the upgrades was gimp--1.3.19-SuSE.ulb.1 When I try to reinstall Sane it fails because it is looking for libgimp-1.2.so.0 & libgimpui-1.2.so.0. Well, now I have libgimp-1.3.so.19 & .19.0.0 (same for libgimpui ) Sane is looking for older packages than I have installed. What to do? Need to get that scanner working again. Would like to get ImageMagick going again also. Haven't investigated thoroughly but is probably the same problem. Bob S.

Is there any "conventional wisdom" regarding upgrades of installed systems from 8.2 to 9.0? Better to wipe and start again, or does the upgrade process work well? I am new to SuSE so I haven't been through a SuSE .0 release before. Thanks in advance.

Hi List, I am sure that this topic must have been hashed and rehashed many times before on this list. Since I have rejoined only recently after a couple of years of absence I beg everyone's pardon for bringing it up, but I'd like to get the license conditions of the SuSE pro box sets straight. This has come up in a recent discussion in my LUG as our annual installfest is approaching. I guess the relevant license terms are stated here: http://www.suse.com/us/private/support/licenses/yast.html Not being a lawyer, I'd like to make sure I understand it correctly and keep myself as well as others in our LUG within the limits of the license. So here are my/our questions: 1. Is it okay to purchase one box set and run SuSE linux on several machines I own? 2. What about sharing the CD set with other people without being paid by them in any form? This question pertains to us potentially using SuSE 9.0 in our upcoming installfest. 3. Can I let a friend borrow the CDs so he can burn copies of them? 4. What about if he uses my CDs to install the software and then copies the contents on his HD? 5. Finally, there are usually some programs that are not put on the ftp server due to license restrictions. I suppose that more severe restrictions apply to these packages, so that they are not supposed to be shared? IF that is true, how would we be able to tell these packages apart from others? Losing mail...

I'm having an odd problem that I can't figure out. Running SuSE 8.2 on a PentiumII 450Mhz box w/128Mb. This summer I upgraded to the 8.2 version by completely wiping out the drive and installing from scratch. At that time I setup the SuSE Firewall in the software mix and likely several other things I'd learned were useful. The point being it wasn't EXACTLY the same options as I'd had when running 8.1 (on which I never had this problem). The problem seems to be that my mail is being deleted from the ISP's server ANY time I go online with this 'puter now. I've had to resort to downloading mail on the old Winduhs box prior to doing anything with the Linux box online. (DialUp) Thinking it was something about the firewall, I have UNinstalled it to no avail. But maybe there's some config file I need to edit manually to get "open" settings back? Is there someplace I can fiddle with individual ports? I haven't found anything like that yet... It's a weird thing. I can send mail from this Linux box and it sends fine. But I can never seem to have any mail in the InBox. By checking the mail via webmail using my Winduhs box I was able to figure out what is happening... the mail is being deleted from the Bellsouth servers BEFORE I ever purposely open the mail client to GetMessages. So when I DO open the mail client and GetMessages, I see "no new mail on server". And indeed checking webmail using Winduhs, it then shows no mail on the second check, tho there were a dozen messages in the InBox 5 minutes ago before I used the Linux box to dialup to the account... And it doesn't make any difference what browser I use. I've used Konqueror and Mozilla and it makes no difference. As soon as I logon to Bellsouth with this Linux box the mail is deleted from the Bellsouth servers. And not to "Trash". Gone. Anybody have an idea what I can do to fix this? Bad Update - Help - Lost SuSE 8.0

I have been a new Suse user for a year or so, but fairly experienced with computers, now using AMD 2.4G and an internal Conexant HCF56k modem (14F1 1036), on an Asus A7S333 mb with 512 MB ram. Everything was going well with my dual-boot W98se/Suse 8.0 until the latest Suse kernel security update (0004) and a new driver (4363) for my NVidia GeForce2MX400. Had a lot of problems, sound and modem mostly. I had to go back to Win98 since August '03 to reach Internet. Big frustration...hate M/S arrogant junk. I goofed: it was wrong to try the NV 4363 (Suse rpm) update using Yast2/Sax2, and not first going into runlevel 3/(no Gui) state. I only saw that warning later! Now my modem won't work despite redoing Yast2 config ( Kinternet logerr: no such dev/modem, but ok in Win98), and re-installing Conexant driver ..beta030427..rpm. My computer works so-so but i'm not sure how to restore it without a complete re-install of 8.0 (or a new 9.0), and thus lose all the patches, updates etc.? I think links got messed up but i'm lost. I could send error logs as needed for any kind help you could offer. My thanks to all the great people on this helpful list. Should i just start over? BrianB.

Since i'm fairly new to apt-get, i'm going to try to install ulb gnome. Well i'm going by his instructions to get it and I have to do an apt-get upgrade. Is it safe to do that, there's lots of packages it's updating. Mostly KDE which I'm currently using of course. Thoughts? -Jason BTW Did I mention I really love SuSE!

GIMP printing

I tried to print a photo jpeg from in gimp. Somehow it does not recognize the printer setup and needs to be setup as well. Having done that I still only get a line of text on every third page when trying to print. Whats up?? SuSE 8.2 and the Gimp printing oddity...

I'm using SuSE 8.2, and I tried to print a picture using the Gimp. My printer, an HP DeskJet 932C, immediately began spitting out mostly-blank pieces of paper, the first of which was headed thus: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %%Creator: Print plug-in V4.2.5 - 24 Jan 2003 for GIMP/Gimp-Print Not sure what else to do, since my experience with Linux is limited, I turned off the printer and rebooted the system. The printer loaded one last sheet when I turned it back on, but I tapped the form feed button and cleared it. Then came the strange part; the printer activated again, but not to spew uninterpreted Postscript files. Instead, this time it printed the picture just as I'd wanted it. I tried this again, printing two different images from the Gimp one after the other; immediately, the printer began spewing, so I rebooted, this time without turning the printer off. The printer got out a few more sheets before the shutdown hit, then loaded a sheet and sat. Again I tapped the form feed button to clear the jam, and again I waited. I wondered if, perhaps, I'd get one perfect picture, then spew, but both pictures came out perfectly. Obviously, I'd like printing from the Gimp to work without me having to 'burp' my computer, but does anyone know why the reboot caused the print job to work the second time around? Further, can someone help me fix whatever's broken?

SuSE 9.0 Pro DVD First time attempt

Hey Group; I am very familiar with the basic Yast2 install proceedure from a CD or floppy. Starting with Side A up on a brand new DVD. The DVD is a Samsung SM-352. After basic bootup (only change was screen res.) at "New Installlation" where Yast displays the "Installation Settings". Under "Software" we get an error stating "Cannot read package data from installation media media error?" This is a new DVD and this is the first time it has been used this way. It has worked as a DVD xsine player. Any selection pased this point gives a error based on the selection is not complete - which is true! A view of the Package Selection screens finds no packages. Is the 9.0 DVD defective? Any clues! We will try the prue CD method.
