I have also just setup cyrus-imap at home
It gives the appearance of working using "plain" authentication.
The documentation for cyrus-imap & cyrus-sasl show that sasl is an auth
system independent of shell accounts.
The "saslpasswd2" command is used to create sasl accounts which are recorded
in "sasldb"
Tonight I will investigate using this auth. mechanism, having successfully
created the sasl accounts

# ldapadd ... -x ...
