Hi SuSE people, Recently did an upgrade with apt-get. I foolishly allowed Sane & ImageMagick to be uninstalled, thinking I would just reinstall them later. One of the upgrades was gimp--1.3.19-SuSE.ulb.1 When I try to reinstall Sane it fails because it is looking for libgimp-1.2.so.0 & libgimpui-1.2.so.0. Well, now I have libgimp-1.3.so.19 & .19.0.0 (same for libgimpui ) Sane is looking for older packages than I have installed. What to do? Need to get that scanner working again. Would like to get ImageMagick going again also. Haven't investigated thoroughly but is probably the same problem. Bob S.

Sometimes when such a problem occurs, a symbolic link with the old package name pointing to the newer packages helps. For example, in this case the command "ln -s /_path_to_file/libgimp-1.3.so.19 /_path_to_file/ libgimp-1.2.so.0" might solve the problem. The same procedure can be followed for other files. However, if there is a specific function the program is looking for is no longer implemented in the newer file or if the parameters sent have changed, then this linking will not work. No harm in trying anyway. LW999

put the following in the file /etc/apt/preferences: Package: gimp Pin: version 1.2* Priority: 1001 Now do an apt-get install synaptic, and synaptic will be downgraded to 1.2 For ImageMagick analyze the output of apt-get install ImageMagick. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I talked to james about this a few months ago. The version of sane and imagemagick are built upon(or against) the older version of gimp. James said it wasn't a priority, so I just left it alone. Try with yast2 to drop back to the old gimp, then reinstall sane and some of the other scanner packages that may have also been uninstalled. I guess you could try to build a new sane, but i wasn't that ambitous. I don't even know if it would work. HTH -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro

Thanks for the replies Franklin, Richard,John, 999, I am kind of lazy so first I tried making links as was suggested. Didn't fool the installer. Didn't want to go searching and building the .src especially if it might not work. Also wasn't sure what that would do to the rpm database at the next upgrade. Soooo... I took the coward's way out, as Richard suggested, pinned Gimp, and did a downgraded "upgrade". Now sane has installed. Did the same thing for the libwmf that ImageMagick wanted. Don't know if it was just me or not but this last apt upgrade, done mainly to upgrade KDE to 3.1.4, was a killer. Some packages just "dissapeared" and I had to reinstall them. BTW one of those packages was Ark. Can't find it to reinstall it. Anyway, all is well again (I hope) in Linux-SuSEland. Thanks guys. Bob S.

Thanks Richard, Hmmmmm.....That could explain some of thestrange things that happened in this KDE upgrade. I wonder why? You are correct. I did not have a kdeutils3, so I installed 3.1.3-58. Nothing bad has happened yet. We will see. Bob S.

As a P.S. to the other messages, you can have both Gimp 1.3.x and 1.2.x installed at the same time. This is what I've done, so I can use 1.3.x for image manipulation and still have xsane available because I've got Gimp 1.2.x installed. It is inelegant and you can't scan directly from Gimp 1.3 (you have to run xsane explicitly) but it does work!
