error when running apt-get upgrade

Hello all, I haven't had a chance to upgrade in the past week or so. This morning I tried to run gaim and it would not load. So I tried to upgrade. When I typed 'apt-get upgrade' I got the following. Please tell me how to fix this so I can finish the upgrade. Hi, Suse9 seems to have only 5 cds. What does this mean - softwares have been reduced or source cds are not included in boxed versions? It was 7 earlier no? I have an opinion - Suse can make following choices: User can choose to purchase with or without source cds - I suppose only geeks set their hands on them and soho users rarely need them. Similarly, either dvd version or cd version can be bought. These options can reduce suse's cost of making boxed versions, right? Rajesh

Mimoso, SearchEnterpriseLinux.com News Editor More enterprises have been less reticent to gamble on Linux during the last 18 months. Once solely a perimeter infrastructure play, Linux is now finding its way onto mission-critical database transaction servers, high-performance computing clusters and even the desktop. Not so coincidentally, Linux's surge in the enterprise has paralleled the poor economy. Enterprise decision makers have been willing to put aside their proprietary tendencies and embrace Linux's costs, reliability and stability. "I think you'll see Linux start to take over some backend database management systems first, then as more ISVs (independent software vendors) move applications to Linux, you'll see Linux move more and more into data centers," said Bill Claybrook, research director Linux and open source for Boston-based analyst firm Aberdeen Group. "Linux scales more than enough now. It's a matter of users requiring ISVs to move more applications onto Linux." The upcoming 2.6 Linux kernel, currently in beta, promises more enterprise features that will drive adoption deeper into the data center as well. "Native Posix thread libraries (NPTL) are a big feature in 2.6," said Holger Dyroff, U.S. director of sales with Nuremberg, Germany-based distributor, SuSE Linux AG. "The performance enhancements are tremendous. There are significant changes in the way device drivers are handled, multipath I/O enhancements and carrier-grade Linux functionality as well. All of these features have been back-ported as well to the 2.4 kernel." Linux and the open-source community are facing their first hurdle, just as the skies seem their sunniest. The SCO Group's $3 billion suit against IBM Corp. and its threats against Linux customers threaten to introduce more patent fights, once thought foreign to the open-source movements. Daniel St. Gelais, a consultant with Quebec City, Canada's InfoTech, recently delivered a Linux-on-the-desktop presentation to the local government there, only to have it temporarily derailed by a fear of backlash from the SCO Group. "They figured it was very serious and said that maybe this was a system they could go without," St. Gelais said. "The government was going to migrate to a new platform. They viewed Linux as the platform for the next decade." Civic leaders in Quebec took notice of the SCO Group's threat to seek licensing fees from Linux users, and that forced them to reconsider their Linux movement. "They didn't know how the issue was going to play out. They didn't want to put effort and time on something that was not going to go on," St. Gelais said. Recently, however, things reversed course again for the Quebec government, St. Gelais said, once it saw that IBM and Red Hat Inc. were countersuing. "They are open and ready to be part of a pilot to use open-source software, especially Linux," said St. Gelais. "I advise anyone not to be afraid to make a Linux proposal to their decision makers." Many high-profile enterprises, meanwhile, are grounded in Linux. Online travel agent Orbitz recently moved off of Sun's Unix OS, Solaris, to Red Hat Linux at a 10x cost reduction and a 2x performance boost, said chief Internet architect Leon Chism. Others like Lithonia Lighting, a $1.3 billion lighting manufacturer, and Dallas Airmotive, a Texas-based airplane engine manufacturer, each saved more than $500,000 doing Unix-to-Linux migrations. Scalability was the turning point for both Lithonia and Dallas Airmotive. Lithonia, for example, started experiencing stability problems with its Oracle ERP manufacturing software running on Solaris. Director of technical services Phil Kilgore said his enterprise's move to Dell hardware running Red Hat Enterprise Advanced Server and an Oracle 9i database has yet to stress the system, even after extending the application to additional regional plants. "We doubled our users again, and we don't plan on adding [Oracle] RAC nodes," Kilgore said. "We're running four currently, and they are not stressed that much." Meanwhile, Kilgore said he spent $250,000 on hardware for the production rack, and he estimates he would have spent three times that amount on a Unix environment. "We got the stability we needed and by buying Intel servers, you can add on the fly. That's the beauty of clustering -- that, and the redundancy," he said. Hi, You have upgraded the KDE from what version ? From KDE 3.1.3 ? I had strange problems with some toolbar icons when I moved from KDE 3.1.3 to KDE 3.1.4 ! The toolbar icons, some of them, were missing. Anyone still running KDE 3.1.3 on SuSE 8.2?

Anyone still running this version and if so is Pysol (cardgame suite) still working correctly and do you still have Freecell (cardgame) showing (and playable) in Games/Card menu? Reason for question(s) is that I have updated to KDE 3.1.4 firstly with the new files released on 25 September and then last night using the file released on 29 September -- and somewhere in this process I lost Freecell (my favourite!) and Pysol stopped working (it disappears off the screen if you move the cursor into the toolbar area). Also, anyone know what happened to (or where it went) the Menu editor? you know the one where you could select different icons for applications etc. It used to be in the Start Applications/System/Configuration (I think) area. KDE: 2 steps forward, 1 step back.... :-(. Cheers. -- If logic ruled the World, men would ride side-saddle.

Easy firewall question

Hi all, I'd like to ad a rule to SuSEfirewall2. On a old Red Hat 7.1 (using ipchains), the line in /etc/sysconfig/ipchains looks as follows: -A input -s 209.73.225.8 80 -d 0/0 -p tcp -j REJECT SuSE's setup is different. The Yast2 setup of sysconfig/SuSEfirewall doesn't seem to make room for this. Should I just stick it in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 ? This is what the docs in /usr/share/doc/packages/SuSEfirewall2 seem to suggest although the examples are a bit too complex for my limited knowledge... Thanks Hans

Has anyone any information about this? Weather this is something common with e100 cards?

NFS shares and umask

I have a directory on the server, shared by NFS. When I create a file there (through NFS), it has the default rights: 755. I want all the files I create on that share to have the rights: 775 (so that other members of the group can write them). How does one upgrade KDE for Suse 8.1? Just download all the RPM's and do an rpm -ivh rpm-file.rpm? Do they need to be installed in any particular order? Does the rpm command need to do an upgrade instead of an install of the RPM? -Thanks- Jim

APT k_athlon & kernel-sources BROKEN

I followed Mantel's suggestion to use "--nodeps" when installing the above kernel and sources. Now, I can no longer use Apt-get. It wants to uninstall 2 broken packages. Will apt-get work with rpm 4.0.4? Ed Harrison

NetHack 3.4.2 for SuSE 8.2?

The version of NetHack included in SuSE 8.2 is 3.4.0, which is actually kind of old. I can get an official binary from nethack.org, but it's not packaged the same way as the SuSE model, with its multiple user interfaces and the common files. Has anyone made RPMs of 3.4.2 following the SuSE model, or should I just use the official binary until 9.0 comes out?

Black Videos after installing ATI Radion driver

Using: SuSe 8.2 ATI Radion 8500 (3Ddiag reported radion QD (1002@5144) Before installing ATI driver fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.5.i586.rpm from ATI site to get 3D to work. video files played fine via: KMPlayer MPlayer Kaboodle Noatun and Xine after installing the ATI driver 3D worked 3Ddiag reported all OK but there is only a black screen (in window) when playing mpg with any of the video players. Sound from the videos still plays. I have tried 3D enabled and disabled. How should I unistall this driver and revert to the YAST default ? 3D is not so important. Is there something general that has been mal-configured by this driver ? Any suggestions please ? John

Can Linux be a Windows Log server?

Reinstalled Suse 8.2 three times. Syslog Services fail to load properly each time. Rebooted several times and I get the same thing. Is this a problem with the cd? using CPIO to backup from the output of a file

Hello, I have two seperate directories I wish to backup on the linux system /home and /usr. I don't seem to be able to find a way to enter the correct path in the crontab so I decided to create a script which takes the contents of /home and inputs it into a file, then append the file with the input of the /usr directory. What I now need to know is how can I get the cpio command to acknowledge this log file and backup all the filenames entered in there??? Somebody please help. Cheers Damian Buckley

[SLE] problems with SBC DSL Internet

I'm a linux newbie, and I've just signed up for SBC DSL Internet Access, and I'm having a world of trouble getting it to work with Linux. After speaking with the tech support idiots (they told me Linux doesn't support DSL), I've spent quite a bit of time trolling the internet for answers. I'm running Suse 8.2, I have a Speedstream DSL modem that SBC gave me, connected via Ethernet. I installed Roaring Penguin's RP-PPPOE but it still won't recognize the modem and the connection won't work. Does anyone use SBC or a similar service that can help me out getting it up and running? It already works on my windows computer, so I don't need to sign up with them, just get linux to recognize the connection. Also, as far as the Ethernet settings, should DHCP be turned on for this, or should I use a static IP address? Thanks, Casey Petersen

Environment: 8.2 Suse Professional i386 (athlon kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-100 ) KDE 3.1.4 from SuSE supplementary directory KDM RPM: kdebase3-kdm-3.1.4-34 /etc/passwd entry for root root:x:0:0:Konqi:/root:/bin/bash The name Konqi as root was added with a PNG file for KDM to display, cute little 64x64 pixel 3D dragon that he is. I have remote login and shutdown disabled via "Control Center->System Administration->Login Manager". System UID set to Below 0 and Above 65000. "unhidden with every hidden but root (before I had Below 500 and had "Selected only" which included "root"). Unable to login to root via KDM. Message is "root logins are not allowed". apt-get through http proxy, anybody?

Hi list users! I followed the discussion on apt, and decided to give it a try using it. OK, I installed everything including synaptic, but I definitely have problem with proxy settings. I can not make apt-get nor synaptic work through an http proxy. I managed to make it with other programs (like wget, fou4s etc) but it doesn't work with apt and synaptic. When I try "update", it simply fail to connect to servers from sources.list file. I tried to search through apt users list, but no results while searching for "proxy" there. Or, I may be blind for something obvious here. Even though this might be a little OT for this list, I decided to ask SLE users for any advice for this problem. Big Drive Problem Continues....

Hi all again, Thank you for your responses. I have checked all that you have advised but I have noticed the following: Upon formating the 200GB drive (under SuSE7.2) with ext2 and I mount it on a directory, linux tells me that the space consumbed by the partition is 129,2 GB. I have created one big partition of the total size of the hard disk and formated it. Still though, linux tells me that the total space is not bigger than 130 GB when I execute df at my prompt!!! This sounds very strange! I have also tried to create two different paritions, one being 100G and another being about 90G and still when I mount these two onto directories, I get a total size of no more than 130 Gbytes. I have also tried installing Win9X on it and Windows tells me that the total disk size is about 190Gbytes which is correct. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong here?? Is this a bug in ext2?? I have also checked the bytes that are reserved for root use and it is only 1%, thus not true for the small size that df shows. Thank you all! Chris

I was bumping around this enigmail thing and created a key. But I don't think I'm able to use it right now. Do I have to upload this to some public server or something? What I really wanted to be able to do is create signed email first and then look into doing encrypted email. But for encription is a public server really necessary? I thought I could just ship the recipient the public key.

I have a problem concerning the Mail Managing. I use pine to send my emails. After Configuraing the Domain and Hostname I was able to send my emails but i couldn;t receive any of them. No i changed the Network Services a little through root account and i cannot send email either. Do you know what is going on? I put them all in one directory andd do (as root): rpm -uvh *.rpm 2>&1 | tee text.txt (the later part is to catch any messages during the "install") but I am sure other have ways they find more comfortable... Last Sunday I tried with knowers to install Debian Woody with a 2.4 kernel: impossible to install the network and PCMCIA interfaces because Woody Debian did not have xircom_tulip_cb kernel module. No problem to initiate internet connection with Knoppix (how I found the needed kernel module). This morning I wanted to install SuSE-8.2 on the same Laptop (already did it on a box with 2000Gb Athlon-AMD): problems, problems, problems much alike the one I had with Woody Debian. At first reboot: It get stucked when trying to start the kernel pcmcia (solved when removing the cardbus) Impossible to mount an usb mass-storage device: everything get stucked when I type "mount /media/sda1", no messages, it get stucked Windows-like -> hard shutdown. Sometimes at boot I have "resource manager failed". eth-pcmcia is OK activating usb-devices: OK I only managed to boot the installed system by launching it from nr 1 install CDRom. Update download whacked

Hello all, I've been trying to update the latest security patch rpm for GDM2 for about 8 hours and it's not downloading it. I've even tried other servers, and still nothing. I'm also using red-carpet for the latest and greatest Evolution products, and it seems to be hosed too...? The thing is, both these tools were working fine for a week now (hard drive failed and had to do a fresh install on new drive) and they're still working for telling me updates are available, but they don't seem to download anything. I've tried using wget manually, and it still works, so that's not the problem. I've gone to the Duke University mirror for Ximian and tried to download the rug (red carpet) updates manually, but the server just hangs on the download request, as does ftp.ximian.com... I can't really believe that SuSE's servers would be hosed in the same manner... this seems really strange in my opinion. My net connection is pretty rock solid, so I don't think it's that, and I've even done the unthinkable.... I've even rebooted! (still no dice, like I figured, but what the hay?!) Has anyone else been experiencing bad mojo with downloading updates? Does anyone have any ideas on solutions? TIA -- Travis Owens <towens(a)linuxmds.com>

I solved the problem!!! It was a stupid thing For some strange reason the ACPI support of SuSE was broken in regards to NVidia Drivers...Simply put 'acpi=off' in kernel parameters at boot, and I was done!!! Now my glxgears went up from ~5000fps to an incredible mark of 9666fps!!! Wow!!! Anyone knows how do I see drivers information, at which AGP speed it is running and such? Somebody told me that it was 'cat /proc/driver/Nvidia/AGP/Card' but that dir does no exist..any help! Thanks folks...Bruce out.

URGENTLY NEED HELP - Postfix and spam

I've just noticed in the last two days something has gone horribly wrong with Postfix on SuSE 8.1. My machine has got a massive queue of emails that it is attempting to send to AOL customers that I never sent myself. AOL is refusing connections, so these emails are sitting in the queue. I've just quickly done a few mail relay tests and all passed. Now I'm not sure if it is due to the Spammer being on the same ISP as myself or due to some other problem with Postfix. I had configured it to "Soft Bounce" emails as I've been testing a few things. How can I remove all these emails from the queue, as it is sending hundreds of requests to AOLs mail servers, and this is probably not a good idea. Thanks Adam

A naive question

How can I visualize on SUSE the detailed information about all available hard disk memory partitions ? I have a dual-boot system with Windows and SuSE 8.2. The Windows partition is mounted a s a Linux partition and I can access it just clicking on its icon on SuSE desktop. If I switch to Windows then I can display all Windows partitions but not SuSe ones. Will I be able to get the same info with SuSE besides the partitions allocated to Linux ? Is there a SUSE tool to do that ? Thank you very much. Mem

I got a new Dell desktop. It came with Windows installed at the factory. I have to set up a duaul-boot system and install SuSE 8.2 Question: Can SuSE partitioner resize Windows partitions ? If it can't ... Should I use "Partition Magic" or ... what else ? Thank you. Maura
