Hi, Suse9 seems to have only 5 cds. What does this mean - softwares have been reduced or source cds are not included in boxed versions? It was 7 earlier no? I have an opinion - Suse can make following choices: User can choose to purchase with or without source cds - I suppose only geeks set their hands on them and soho users rarely need them. Similarly, either dvd version or cd version can be bought. These options can reduce suse's cost of making boxed versions, right? Rajesh
Yes, well, 8.2 is on 5 CD's and 2 DVD's, so SuSE 9.0 will be likeways... :) Rajesh Ganesan wrote:

Probably not. With all of these options come additional costs for different packages, more inventory sets to maintain, etc. SuSE ver. 8.2 PRO had 2 DVD's and 5 CD's with the sources on the second DVD. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998

With some stuff that you could only install from the DVD, though, which I found quite surprising. (i.e. octave) Sergio -- The struggling for knowledge has a pleasure in it like that of wrestling with a fine woman. -- Lord Halifax

Well, do the math. A DVD can hold some hundred megabytes more than 5 CDs, so we would rather add stuff, than sell free DVD space. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. Considering the vast difference in retail costs between CD's and DVD it
is smarter to avoid the DVD.
If the sources are not on the CD's where are they?
Online??

Yes. The sources for 8.2 (i386) are at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/8.2/suse/src I guess that you can substitute the 8.2 with 9.0 in the path above when the time comes. Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

well.. considering that the box comes with *both* cds and dvds, there's no issue here. during install, you can either use a single dvd or swap between the cds. your price comparison can only be coming from comparing music cds to video dvds. how does that have anything to do with software distribution? in both cases, your dealing with separate groups who have been in trouble several times for price fixing (after claiming lower prices as a selling point before switching over to the format). i've seen a grand total of one program that was sold on cd and dvd separately, and guess what? they were the same price! (although baldur's gate had a dvd available, it was only to people who had bought the game on cd and they charged $5 s&h)
If the sources are not on the CD's where are they? Online??
at first, they'll be available on the second dvd. once the distro is available online, the sources will be available there as well. -- trey

Probably wrong... the cost of producing CD's or DVD's is pretty small compared to the cost of boxing up two different distro's (CD & DVD) and having to supply them to the channel and keeping track of them, etc. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
