Have you tryed putting the /boot partition within the 1024 cyl. limit? [SLE] Further to my last mail.

Hi further to my last email regarding my keyboard issue. I am finding that 7.0 hangs on me a lot. for instance after finding my keyboard issue in X, I logged out back to the main console. I then re-ran X (startx), and it started and then locked the hole PC with some coloured crap at the top of a black screen. I have re-booted, re-run sax2..and it is still hanging when running X. I am going to try uping XFree86 to 4.01, and then also download the NVIDIA drivers to properly configure my Geforce2 card. But XFree86 4.0 and SUSE 7 should at least support my card with 800x600 and 256 colours. So why does it keep hanging? I thought Linux was supossed to be more stable than Windows!!!! Ok you want an x-server, we have an x-server you want a window manager we have that too. you want 3d stuff. hmm . this will take a bit more time but hey i can live without that for the mo. Graphics performance is pretty good. not as good as w2k but i guess theres some tweaking to do. ax2, Xfree86 -configure, xf86config, none of these produce a working XF86config file. i dont think the card is identified properly or something. whatever. [SLE] sendmail Group writable directory question

Hello Linux folks. Every time when I'm starting smtpd I'm getting this message in /var/log/warn: sendmail[3241]: daemon could not open control socket /var/run/sendmail.control: Group writable directory What does it mean and how to fix it? [SLE] Does Linux Need Defragging

I am curious to know if there is any such thing as fragmentation problems or a need for defragging the hard drive in Linux. The reason I wonder is that I have never seen or heard any mention of disk fragmentation as a concern with Linux. If disk fragmentation is not an issue in Linux, can anyone explain why? [SLE] bash question

I have a problem with quoting/escaping in bash that I seem to run into periodically. Typically I find I'm using a command with a couple layers of "s and 's a lot so I decide it would be a good idea to turn it into an alias. At that point everything goes to hell. :) I use perl a lot so I'm particularly susceptable to the version of this problem where I get a command like: perl -e '$bar = "xyzzy"; print "foo\n\t$bar\n"' .. and want to turn it into a bash alias. Unfortunately I can never figure out where to put all the \s, 's, and "s to make this sort of thing work. Adding that next level of quotes to set the alias just causes all sorts of problems for me. Could someone either post a quick example of the syntax for making an alias out of the above perl command, or point me to something like a mini-howto on quoting/escaping in bash?
