[SLE] Can't locate module block-major-8

I have just re-compiled my kernel with the suse 2.2.16 sources and when I try to access /dev/sda1 I get the message cannot locate module block-major-8. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? The drive is a DVD-RAM drive. I can read CDs in it as \dev\scd0 -- This e-mail may contain information which is commercial-in-confidence and/or legally privileged. [SLE] Linux Technology Preview Boot Screen

(This message isn't about to become as OT as the subject suggests) Has anyone seen Caldera LTP's (Linux Technology Preview (Kernel 2.4)) boot screen? It's really pretty nice looking, it puts a "Motif" like list box on one side listing the status of the system loading process, and has Caldera's logo on the right. The list box scrolls (automatically) through the various process startup screens just like the normal startup messages, abet in a graphical interface. Any chance we might see something like this in SuSE 7.x? [SLE] kernel problem again!

hi all i've successfully forced lx_suse to be installed(thanks to some of your advice), but my kernel just refused to be untared. i've read the README file in linux-2.2.16.SuSE ( generated by lx_suse.rpm). since i've downloaded the whole kernel, i followed exactly what it says : cd /usr/src #yep my new kernel is there gzip -cd linux-2.2.16.tar.gz|tar xfv - ...to which the same error appeared: linux-2.2.16.tar.gz:not ingzip format? how should i rectify it? p.s. version of gzip 1.2.4-150 (suse6.4,kernel2.2.14) hope to hear from u & thanks in advance for your help. tk ===== 0Oo~~:o) Smile! [SLE] Makefile errors trying to compile "gstalker"

Could anyone kindly give me a clue, what these 2 error messages mean, please : { am trying to compile "gstalker" } 1) /usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lesd: No such file or directory 2) gnome/lib -L/usr/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -ldb /usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lesd: No such file .. . . what would " -lesd " mean ? thanks Richard -- ____________ sent on Linux ____________ This Email is 100% Virus Free! That is what I am trying to do, mount the logical directory name, but it still gives me the denied when I try to write to it. I can mount a test directory on the first drive, and write to it, but not to the other drives. This is a physical drive, the second in the system that I am having trouble writing to... [SLE] Answering machine prog.

Hello, I have a SuSE machine and a Win98 machine connecting to the 'net through a linux-based server/firewall (seperate box). I can no longer use a windows program I used to use as an answering machine (the only modem is on the server). Is there a program I could run on the server to replace it? I've had no luck so far finding one. I do have VMware, which could run win98 (and the answering machine prog.) on the server, but I think this would really bog things down and I'm not even sure it would work. Ideas? Hello, Why do you need to do this? It shouldn't matter, should it? You can boot off of any drive just the same, regardless of the letter. If you have a device attached to hde, the bios will automatically make it "c" and bootable. Better yet, with the latest SuSE, it will boot from anything. Now, if you really need to swap boot devices, there is a kernel option to do so, that is not enabled by default. It will rearrange the hdx's, but you're probably on your own, as there probably aren't that many people who use it anymore. Your email is a little confusing, though.
