One thing I miss when I'm in S.u.S.E. is the download status indicator in ftp. FreeBSD must use a newer ftp because it has one. I don't mind using ncftp, but I really prefer plain vanilla ftp if possible. Is there a package I can get off the S.u.S.E. ftp site to upgrade ftp? [SuSE Linux] Save Configuration bug in 5.3

I'm using SuSE 5.2 on 5 ALR Revolution 6x6 servers (each with 4 Pentium Pros, 512MB RAM,4x4.3GB HDs). It's important that all 5 be identical. In 5.2 I configured the 1st install by hand and saved the result to a floppy. YaST asked for the floppy before showing me the different load configurations, and asked if I wanted to save my config file to hard disk or floppy. I used the floppy to load the config file into each of the other 4 systems, and YaST installed exactly the same stuff on each one. On 5.3, YaST will occasionally recognize the config floppy IF it already has a config file saved on it. It NEVER asks whether I want to use a floppy to save a config file, and always writes my custom config file to the hard disk, which is useless. I think this is really the biggest bug in 5.3 (so far). Well I received 5.3 FedEx yesterday. After some of the comments I was unsure whether I wanted to upgrade(in fact I had not requested to be on a subscription). The upgrade went fairly easily though my sound does not work(I'll have to go back and look at some posts concerning that, which encouraged me it may be easier than in 5.2 BTW what is the difference between the OSS and the OSS demo?) To my main point: I had never fully configured diald(I think it may be of little use as my internet access is through a freenet that does not support PPP), but after upgrading to 5.3 Linux dials my modem almost before boot up has completed. [SuSE Linux] Linux and the CPU

Using the K desktop. After my SuSE has been up and running for a while on this Micron 166 (32mb ram) I get bogged down with memory usage. The HDD light remains on and the mouse gets choppy. I looked in with Xosview and can see my CPU running at 100teadily. A glance with top and I see something called "find" claiming 930f my CPU usage, so I kill it. Then "mandb" runs up to 78%. Kill that. Now things are good again. What was happening? I have only used Terminal, KMail and Netscape this morning on a fresh boot. I have a screensaver active, is that it? [SuSE Linux] "system is not able to compile a small KDE application!"

I am running a patched together S.u.S.E. with egcs, QT 1.4, and KDE1.0 for rh5 & QT 1.4 on one system. The other system has g++ 2.7.01, QT 1.32. I'm not sure of the KDE on the latter system. The first system is the one I really want to work. Both of my systems give me the same message when I try to compile ksamba: "system is not able to compile a small KDE application! Check, if you installed the KDE header files correctly." I echo $all_includes from confugure and get: "all_includes: -I/opt/kde/include -I/usr/lib/qt/include -I/usr/X11R6/include" /opt/kde/include has a bunch of *.h in it so I figure I'm pointing to the correct location. It refuses to recognise my password. Yo folks, The wierdest thing happend this morning when changing my shell. When using chsh it asked for my password, i typed in the right one (several times), but it kept refusing it. I telnetted to the machine with the same username and password --> no problem. Even than it didn't work. I am having no luck getting the Epson drivers to recognize my particular printers (Stylus Pro and Stylus Photo). After trying to print a single email, I am left with a problem. Each time I restart Linux it tries to print it again. More wasted paper. I type k and select the line "epsonlette" which stops the printing in progress, but it always comes back. I don't know if this holds as a general rule, but here's what i did when I needed a new driver for my NIC. I downloaded tulip.c. At the end of the source file is the compile command. It looks like gcc -Wall -Blah -Blah -IBlah ..... tulip.c I cut and pasted that onto the command line and after it compiled, got a tulip.o which I tested by saying insmod /path/to/wherever/tulip.o which loads the module. It worked, so I moved tulip.o to /lib/modules/blahblah/net or something and it has worked ever since. You may also need to uncomment a line in conf.modules.
