[SuSE Linux] Comms problems

Hi all, I finally solved my comms problem with SuSE Linux - by changing my modem! I previously establish a connection but was not getting any data throughput from the serial device so I never got to a login prompt. Changing from the Us Robotics Sportster 56kbps to my old trusty Reveal 28.8kbps solved the problem. I can now use minicom. Also wvdial works a treat. So what's going on here? Does SuSE not support the world's number one modem? On another note, I can't get ezppp to work for one reason: when the connection is answered you need to send a cr to get a login prompt from the host. Ezppp (unlike wvdial) does not appear to send one automatically. How do I set this up in the script. I have tried 'Send \n' but that doesen't work. Any ideas? Thanks. [SuSE Linux] Remote Printer setup (printcap)

I am having trouble getting my printcap files correct, would some kind sole please give me the basic setup for a 300 dpi postscript printer located at 172.22.1.3 with a print queue named psprint? I know, I read the manual, tried putting it in using YaST ( no choice for remote printer) setting it up as a local printer on lpt1, then changing it to 172.22.1.3 but not doing so good... The actual printer is a laserjet III (model 33449A), but I found in RedHat, the only way to get it to print anything other than text was to add a postcript cartridge. The ghostscript selection of lj3 didn't work properly, none of the laserjet filters worked properly ( tried them all). Classic! I planted 2 Celebrities and 2 Early Girls- one Celebrity succumbed to late blight. I planted late- in early July, but I'm in Santa Clara (a/k/a Silicon) Valley, California with a nice Indian summer, so I should be reaping a harvest in a few weeks. That is, if I can keep those thieving squirrels away, who've already made off with a couple green fruit. [SuSE Linux] Newbie with Disk Errors???

Being new to Linux I had just got my version installed on an 814Mb alongside MSDOS dual booting with LILO. On the first boot, LILO went beautifully, then.... half-way through the boot.... disaster struck! (I gotta make this sound good!!) The message "/dev/hda4 [my /usr partition] contains errors. Check forced." appeared. Then it chuntered away for a while.... until loads of errors started appearing on screen.(stuff like sector not found, sector id not found, ide reset.... can't remember exactly or write it down.. it's scrolled off screen. Now the screen is telling me to RUN FSCK MANUALLY, please repair and reboot. My question? How do I repair? I have a rescue disk but no idea how to use it! (D'OH) (.... I would probably say RTFM but the manuals are installed on the linux system which is not functioning at present!) Anyone forthcoming with wonderful ideas? [SuSE Linux] Menu wrecked by KDE "unreleased"

I installed the unreleased portion of the KDE tools from my 5.3 cd's. The experimental stuff turns out to be mostly games, anyway, so I used YaST to uninstall it all. My K menu is now jumbled almost beyond recognition. One of the buttons is now blank (choices are still there, just no title to that button), and that same button is duplicated further down the tree. I just want to know if there is any way to copy the menu items from another computer (I have two with identical setups) or can I somehow "fix" the menu short of reinstalling? [SuSE Linux] Questions regarding a new system/multi-boot/sound card/etc.

Hello all, First of all a little background info. I learned of Linux about a year ago and have been reading up on it ever since. I have yet to install it on a system, for I learned of it after I just bought & configged my Win95 computer. Now, after only a year, I am looking for another computer (you will soon learn I am one of the biggest addicts for new technology there is). Basically, I only use SCSI devices on my computers. It may just be psychological or something, but I find SCSI to be much more reliable and faster. So, this is my idea for my next system: Processor: Intel Pentium II 400/450 Motherboard: ASUS P2B-LS BX Motherboard with on-board Adaptec AHA-2940U2W (Ultra2 Wide SCSI) & Intel 10/100 Ethernet Card Memory: 128 MB PC100 SDRAM Graphics Card: ?!? (AGP?!?) Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 9.1 GB Ultra Wide or Ultra2 Wide SCSI hard drive CD-ROM: Plextor UltraPlex 14X/32X Internal SCSI CD-R/W: Yamaha 2X CD-RW/4X CD-R/6X Read External SCSI Modem: External Motorola 56K ModemSURFR Sound Card: Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold Now that I've told you all of this let me try to explain why I've told you all of this. Basically I was wondering the group's recommendations about this equipment and it's support under S.u.S.E. Linux (preferably using stable kernels), such as the AHA-2940U2W controller card, and the Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold. (I've read with much interest many of the problems with sound in version 5.3 & I've also heard complaints about the Creative Labs cards...basically my reason for the gold is I really like the gold-plated stereo outputs...if someone knows of a high-quality card with this feature other than from Creative Labs, esp. one better supported under Linux, I'm open to ideas). With the graphics card, originally I was considering Diamond Multimedia's FireGL 1000 Pro, then I saw they had a FireGL 4000, and I also saw the new Viper V550 with 16MB RAM, plus the new Velocity V4400 with 16MB RAM also, & the ATI Rage Magnum with _32MB_ RAM! I know most of them come in both AGP and PCI (except maybe the FireGL's...not sure). Personally I would favor the AGP, b/c I wouldn't be wasting a slot on my motherboard, but I'm not sure of support under Linux...any recommendations. Next on my list, I was wondering how possible it would be to multi-boot between these three operating systems: S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3, Windows NT Server 4.0, & _Novell Intranetware 4.11_. I've seen the How-To's for booting between Linux & NT, but I haven't noticed anything mentioning Novell. I'm not even really sure if it's possible to multi-boot with Novell, but I'm just assuming it must be possible somehow. If anyone has any ideas or has a similar situation on their computer, I'd love to know how it can be accomplished. I'd also like to hear some suggestions on how to partition the drive, including the different directories for Linux, and possibly any ideas for NT (separate the O/S & data/apps?!?...put O/S on FAT 16 & data on NTFS or vice versa?!?) As you can probably see from the operating systems I'm most likely going to be using this new computer as a server & play-toy (server...play-toy...what's the difference!?! ;)) I'm planning to connect a Pentium 200 MMX & my mom's Pentium 90, both running Win95 to it, and possibly to all three different server O/S' (at different times of course). I'd most likely use a small 4-node hub & 100 Mb/s Categoryy 5 Ethernet cable. So, if anyone has any good suggestions, I'd really love to hear them. Sorry for such a long rant (which I realize is a little disorganized, too), but I'm really happy to finally, hopefully joining the ranks of the Linux community. And about the questions on other O/S' I know it may be a little off-topic, but I figured Linux users had to be the smartest computer users out there & that they most likely had the most diversified experience & in-depth knowledge of all types of computers & O/S'.
