Hello, As Carlos pointed out, I had accidentally hijacked an earlier thread, so I am starting this new one up. Here is the original message: I have implemented Google Custom Search on enstage.opensuse.org, and I am personally very happy with the results. To try it out, you can visit http://enstage.opensuse.org/Portal:GoogleSearch and try searching on anything you want. It is about a thousand times better than what we have, and with the better relevance ranking, namespace searching is no longer an issue. While the current search is advertisement supported, I am nearly positive that we can get ad support removed. It seems that Google is pretty willing to do this for non-profits. What does everyone think? If you don't have access to the staging site, I will be more than happy to send you a screen shot of the search page. If everyone is on board, I will ask Thomas to edit the theme to make it the default search, and we'll send it live. Hello All and Everyone- Today, I wish to talk about redundancy. In particular things that add no new information and are a simple rearrangement of the understood data. In other words: repetitiveness for no-gain at all. Problem ------- I was trying to point a community member at the Kernel Git page today so they could get involved. But I was baffled to find it gone. Searching a bit I ended up finding it at this URL: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Kernel_git Two openSUSE's in one URL, what a deal! Without that openSUSE: namespace I might have thought I was going to grab the Ubuntu Kernel Git... As we are breaking URLs all over with this new wiki anyways can we take a moment and consider the URL monsters we are creating here? Just look at it once again: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Kernel_git There has got to be something better, lets find a solution. :) Solution -------- Lets look at the mission statement of the openSUSE: namespace[1]: "And the openSUSE community's openSUSE: namespace to collaboratively write on documentation for their projects and teams." Possible alternatives: 0. No namespace at all, the openSUSE community exists at openSUSE.org! We have an entire domain to call our own! Why do we need a namespace? 1. devel: ? Oh, but these teams are not necessarily developers 2. teams: ? Erm, no because then it would be teams:Kernel_git which makes no sense 3. community: ? Maybe, but community:Java packaging cookbook looks strange 4. project: ? This is my second choice as nearly all of the links on http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Project are to the openSUSE: namespace... 1-4 have their problems but at least they are not redundant. Lets discuss what problem this openSUSE: namespace is trying to solve and how we can make sane looking URLs on our new wiki. And lets do it fast so we can avoid breaking URLs again. [opensuse-wiki] Bento Login Form Problems

Hello, There are two major problems with the bento theme login which will need to be fixed. Until they are, I am recommending that everyone avoid using the javascript login form and instead use the standard login page that is used by the legacy wiki. Issue 1: The login form sends information in plain text over plain HTTP. I have actually fixed this on stage, but perhaps others would like to review it to make sure that passwords aren't being sent in clear text anymore. Assuming that is the case, it can go live when I run the next update. So please try this out in stage (if you are able) and get back to me. If one of you have WireShark installed, that would be perfect. Issue 2: As far as I can tell, this login form is the reason behind Bug 619735. After a lot of testing and troubleshooting in stage, this is the most likely culprit so far. Basically, I can duplicate the problem easily when using the bento login form, but I cannot duplicate at all using the standard login page. It looks like the cookie is not set properly when using this login, although I can't see any apparent reason why that is. Strangely enough, submitting an edit does set the cookie, which is why only the first edit fails. Please test out the fix for the first issue, and see what might be causing the second. Until then, the best workaround is to use the standard login form. Thanks! Matt

Hello! The web and the KDE Portal refers to http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Developing/Guide for developing KDE on openSUSE, i.e. tries to attract developers to use openSUSE. Those links now point into emptiness. How come they were not transfered and the work that went into them thus disregarded? Hi, wer immer von euch Online ist, sollte sich schnellstens die EN-Wiki Startseite anschauen. Das wurde wieder von Spam-Kram reingesetzt und der darin befindliche Inhalt gelöscht. Ich schmeiß den Spam Mist da raus, aber sperren müsst ihr diese, da ich im EN-Wiki nicht die Rechte habe wie im DE-Wiki. Ihr solltet diese Seiten sperren und nur für Admins zugänglich halten. Sorry das ich hier deutsch schreibe, aber englisch ist very BAD :) ---- who is always online you should look at the soon-EN wiki page. This was again reingesetzt spam stuff and deleted the contents therein. I'll throw the spam crap out there, but you have to block them because I was not in EN-wiki, the rights as in DE-Wiki. you should lock these pages and release only for admins. Hello Project Management, I would like to know why the German wiki page was not transferred to the English wiki as was previously announced? Somehow, no one has spoken on this subject and none of the active of the German Wiki said anything if the DE wiki is still there later, do not turn, or whatever? After all, we have spotted our items ready to keep the transfer date to be able to. Had to get an important information, since the links (Inter-wiki, etc) no longer work and into the empty run. It will keep asking users what if and how what happened there, the same is true for users to create or edit the articles. This condition may not remain so and should be corrected urgently. I know this have to do much, and all are busy. Yet it would be nice if one could follow in short sentences info so that we in "good old Germany" also know where we are ....:) Deutsche Fassung findet sich in der deutschsprachigen Wiki-Mailingliste (opensuse-wiki-de). I have seen a lot of mails flying by about the Wiki rework etc, but.. (I may have missed the discussion) has there been any plans or thought put into fixing the poor default search in MediaWiki? There was a discussion about this on the Project list a few days ago, and it brought up a very good point. The default search within MediaWiki is very poor to say the least. There are a couple of extensions for MediaWiki available that vastly improve the returned results, especially this one: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MWSearch combined with http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Lucene-search Are there any plans to implement this extension, or do anything to improve the search results? hi, mediawiki is pretty flexible when it comes to managing links and renaming links. it adds a nice redirect page which makes sure that external links keep working. in the current state the new opensuse wiki is horrible. almost all external opensuse documentation (be it on build.o.o, in osc or in blog entries) is trash now, as they point to dead links. So I would like to ask ... can we please add a policy that every migrated page has to have the redirect page for its old name? (Forwarding my message from yesterday that wasn't publicly available - my mistake). Hi there, Please note I removed the block on the spammer I put this morning, as some people seem to be unable to use some features (image uploading and import/export pages). For some reason, a wide range of IP was blocked at the same time as the one belonging to the spammer. Not sure if this is a wiki bug, or a wiki admin bug :) We might re-add the block later if necessary. I also alerted Frank Sundermeyer about this issue. Henne, On irc you requested me to implement the maps extension on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Map. What I did: I edit and checked the list on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Map/Coordinates to make it usable for the extension. (removing spaces, and other bad things.) Enforced a <noinclude> for the top part off the article. Edit Template:map_user to meet the extension's syntax as stated on http://mapping.referata.com/wiki/Help:Marker_data (#display_points:Address1~Title1~Label1~Icon1; address2~Title2~Label2~Icon2) etc. Address can be an existing address (eg Berlin, Germany) or decimal coördinates, seperated by comma. The latter is used in the list. So the template now looks like this: {{{1}}}, {{{2}}}~{{{3}}}~{{{4}}}, {{{5}}}; (including space behind ";") for: Code: {{Map user|<Latitude>|<Longitude>|<Label>|<Description>|<URL>}} So next step was, since I enforced <noinclude> in the non-list part of http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Map/Coordinates, to remove the old map from http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Map and add the line: {{#display_points:{{openSUSE:Map/Coordinates}}}}. This takes the complete list, generated by above template, in a correct systax. However, when I push preview (thank god I didn't safe) I get a fatal server error (500) from novell. Is it just to much to handle? Or am I missing something. I don't know how this kicks in on server recources, there are 314 user's locations to be processed on the fly, each having 3 syntax for the actual #display_points command. This means about 950 options for 1 command. Or I'm doing something wrong here, or it's just not capable of doing the job. Instead of immediate deletion of articles that don't violate basic Terms of site, please set {{Delete|<explanation>}} on the page. Give a chance contributors to speak up. I just caught myself deleting articles that are not real violation, but merely misunderstanding of how we work now. Henne and the rest of the gang, This is what I meant on IRC earlier today. I couldn't stop working on it, so I completed it. I created a template: http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Screenshot_step You need to reed the Doc to understand it. Basicly it's a table line, without the table, allowing to create more fancy screenshot pages, without the screenshots filling the whole page. For each step/instruction this template can be inserted. It makes the page more attractive for the eye and easier to read. It is not mandatory to define a image for each step, when none is specified a nice blank area is presented. The images are clickable and direct to the actual image, so not to the File:page. I implemented the Template on http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_CD_installation_for_11.3 Compare it with http://en.opensuse.org/Archive:Live_CD_installation_for_11.1 and tell me which one you like the most ;) If you guys like this style for screenshot pages, maybe we can create a boilerplate using this template. The page itself (http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_CD_installation_for_11.3) still needs some attention: I don't have screenshots for step 6 and 7, my computer crashed two times in attempts to get screenshots in this stage. In the bottom there's a chapter ==Note on installation to large partitions== which is kinda fuzzie, so it needs attention. My eyes are tired now and I'm going to bed! A) The problem: *There seems to be no article about Bugzilla in the wiki* Maybe someone could help the consumer a bit if she/he needs help from the wiki with bugzilla about the issues: 1) a) to know what bugzilla is - the description and the definition (the wiki helping the consumer to get basic knowledge about a essential part of the openSUSE project - in my opinion the lowest level, according to the telos/meaning of namespaces, namespace definitons and namespace rules: so namespace 0=main or at least namespace 102 = portal) b) to know if someone else has the same problem (troubleshooting/support - I think that would be the most wanted but according to the words of the definition a article only on this issue would be member of namespace SDB) 2) a) wants the developers to tell about a problem that he has so that the developers can help him (article about to get help by by telling the helpers about the problem - namespace SDB) b) wants to help the developers to improve the distribution by telling them about a problem hat she/he had (article about helping the helpers by telling the helpers about the problem - namespace openSUSE) c) wants other users to tell about a workaround/solution he had figured out (the wiki helping to help the potential helper to tell the users/consumer about a possible resolution - namespace openSUSE) B) The plot/the detailed description: The last night I saw a edit according to a problem that prevents users to make live usb devices form DVD images and therefor to install a DVD image on a netbook (which by definition has no DVD or CD drive): This morning I wanted to help the users that had reported that problem in the forums (see: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/information-new-users/unreviewed-how-faq… http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/install-boot-login/442070-… and on the wiki by telling him how to escalate that a bit so that in the future the potential users of openSUSE on a netbook do not give up just because they are not able to install a DVD image on a netbook (what would be a bit funny after making the netbook support a highlight of the new version open 11.3 and the mobile things a strategic/tactic target of openSUSE - see the new openSUSE strategy). I thought it would be an easy thing to give them the according article about bugzilla in the wiki (a "what is" including the purpose of bugzilla and may be with a little "how to use" or at least a link to a article about the detailed "how to use"). I gave "bugzilla" in the normal internal search engine of the wiki - with me been logged in and so (differing to the default settings) with the search in namespace SDB = ns102 also enabled so I would get with will (as I understood) the openSUSE-wiki's seach engine make 0) would lead to an article with name/tile "bugzilla" if such would exist (and if not go to 1) and 2) which may be equal to http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Special:Search&limit=20&offset=0&ns0… ) 1) first get articles displayed with with "bugzilla" in the name/tile and 1) will be containing (without a namespace related) order 1.1) articles in the namespace main (ns0) 1.2) articles in the namespace SDB (ns100) 1.2) articles in the namespace Portal (ns102) 2) second get articles displayed with with "bugzilla" in the body/text and 2) will be containing (a namespace related) order 2.1) articles in the namespace main (ns0) 2.2) articles in the namespace SDB (ns100) 2.2) articles in the namespace Portal (ns102) According to the google-like output/display of the output of titles and text around the fitting words in the text of the search results the best fitting but last displayed article of 23 search results was: http://en.opensuse.org/BG-Submitting_Bug_Reports which sees to contain something about the topic 2) but cause of my not existing knowledge of/in that language (my guess: Bulgarian with Cyrillic letters - ISO 639-1 bg) I can understand only the links and the title of that article in English. Tim, I have added the Indexes directive to files.opensuse.org. You should be able to go in there and file the uploaded files for all the wikis. More importantly, you can now get all the files together with a single wget command if that will help you out in your quest. Something like the following should work: wget -r -np -nd http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/old-en/ This will download every file that has been uploaded to the old-en wiki and place it under a single directory. I believe all the filenames should be different, and I believe it is set to no-clobber by default, so this should be a safe command to run. You may also want to consider adding a little wait time between requests (with a -w), so that you don't destroy your bandwidth on this. There is another thread from a few days ago with the subject "Search on the Wiki?". On this thread, I have tried opening a discussion about implementing a solution for this problem. So far, I have heard complaints all over the list about the default wiki search, but I have not seen any discussion on the thread that is proposing a solution. For those of you who don't like the current search, please start having some discussion about what can be done about it. We have a couple of options, but for me to take the amount of time needed to explore, recommend, and implement something, Novell will need to sign off on it. I'm going to try to grease the wheels (I also don't care for the default search), but it would also be good to show that it is more than just me who is interested in a particular solution. I've created it as yet-another-#redirect. I also found that the wiki search sucks in another unexpected way: (maybe related to what Rajko described below) A user who types 'bug report' in the search box, gets nothing. It appears that page title matches are 'exact matches', not substring matches. Hi Guys, I encountered ( as noted in the LTSP topic) that transferring can only be done by members of the "administrators" group. I'm more than willing to help with this. To be more specific, I'm kinda stuck here on LTSP and I want to complete it, as now I have the time to do it. I send a list to Rajko what to be transferred and to what name/location. I know he's busy and I don't want to push him, but I also hate to be patient. I do not have the ambition to become an "administrator" , but maybe there's a possibility to create a temporary group eg. "transfer" and add everybody in there that is allowed to import articles. Hello, Here are a couple of quick items for you reference regarding the wiki: -Bug #619735 has been resolved and is awaiting verification. The /var partition on the backup web server got filled with logging. Since session data was also stored on the partition, new sessions were not being created. This was not a problem on the primary web server, which is why the problem was intermittent. Since cleaning out the partition, the problem seems to have gone away. If I don't hear anything about it happening in the next couple of days, I will close it. -I have installed the MultiUpload extension on the new wikis. Right now, you can access it at Special:MultipleUploads. However, I can easily make it the default uploader. Tim and I wanted to bring this up for a discussion. I think it is something that users will appreciate. If we make it the default, we may also want to edit the theme to say Upload files (plural) in the Toolbox, instead of the singular form. -Speaking of extensions, I was wondering if one or more of you might go through the list of extensions we have installed to make sure that they are all needed. We have an awful lot in there (twice as many as in the legacy wiki!), and I am a little concerned about the wiki getting bloated. It's no big deal if all the extensions are being used, but at the same time, I want to make sure that we they are being used. Thanks! -Matt

Then I will move it myself. jdd, It's not that I want to attack you, I'm not calling you useless. Probably 90% off the people working around openSUSE have more contribs then me. But if you come with problems, make it short facts. one by one, explain how to do it better and if it makes sense we can do something about it. Just writing endless complaints isn't motivating anybody to listen to you and do something about it. I'm just saying, redesigning the namespace again, it's far to late for that, so it's useless to discuss it. Yes, the main namespace should be like a brochure, but no, it is certainly not the working domain of the wiki team. We got other tings going on, like transferring more articles to make the wiki more complete. If we would like to restrict the pages, we would make it protected. You and anyone can edit all namespaces, there are only certain rules to follow, to give it a more organized structure than it was. And the hostile feeling about SDB: I know where it comes from, it used to be a namespace full of not updated articles and only to be used by experts. The new wiki is a nice opportunity to change this. Make it more complete and make it a real Support Database. See it as one big helpfile. I changed to this subject, since we like to use the Transferring Articles thread for quick questions to each other, while doing the job: transferring articles, with the structure how it is now. If somebody heads in trouble, he uses that thread. It's not meant for this discussions. If you are actually transferring an article and you have a question about it, or trouble, use that thread. So they don't have to worry about the SDB prefix. There is a "Download Help" link right below it that points to http://en.opensuse.org/Download_Help which is of course an empty page. To summarize, the change will begin at 17:00 UTC (~30 minutes from now) and will last 10-15 minutes. Tim, How are you determining which files you want to get? If it makes life easier for you, I can just allow index view on files.opensuse.org, which I should probably do anyway. With that, you can download all the files on old-en.opensuse.org into one directory with a single wget command. That would probably make it a lot easier for you to pick and choose the files you need. I will look into getting one of these upload extensions installed as soon as I get a handle on this session error bug that is affecting imports in the first place. Since it is possible, however unlikely, that one of the new extensions that we installed is related to the problem, I am wary of installing more extensions until we at least know what is going on. Hi Guys, I found it particular difficult to transfer images (File:xxx.png). Now the work flow is: *Transfer article. You find missing images *Trace them down 1 by 1 on the old wiki and download them *Upload them 1 by 1 on the new wiki. This is very annoying when transferring articles with multiple screenshots, or Artwork articles (I'm busy with that). This gets also pointed out by others whom I speak on irc. At least for the uploading part I found: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MultiUpload There are more tastes available in: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Configuring_file_uploads#Mass_uploading Is it possible to install an extension like this ASAP? I'm still try to work out a script for downloading multiple images at once, to overcome the sub-directory problem. Tried earlier tips form Rajko and Cristian, but it's not working as it should (wget is following a little bit to much). Hi Guys, Today I started on cleaning the trash in http://old-en.opensuse.org/Category:Checked_Articles. Most article's where double marked (Reviewed and TransferNote). I Removed {{Reviewed}} from the articles also containing {{TransferNote}}. Now I'm busy clearing the list by transferring the articles and mark them with {{TransferNote}}. I hope I get half way today and finish it tomorrow. I also found articles already transferred, but not marked with {{TransferNote}}, so this is also in the fixing progress. Can an admin for old-en.o.o have a look at http://old-en.opensuse.org/Ambassadors/List and remove the {{Reviewed}} tag. I'm not admin on old-en.o.o and it's locked. PLEASE, when you transfer anything form this Category, don't forget to mark them and remove {{Reviewed}} tag. It was (and still is) a hell of a job to clean up afterwards. Thanks in advance! Hello All, As some of you may know, we have hit a little snag with the wikis. One of the two primary web servers for www.opensuse.org, files.opensuse.org, and the wiki farm had a major hardware failure yesterday. After some discussion with the data center, we decided that it would be safer to keep that server out of the rotation, rather than attempt to fix and bring the server back online during the 11.3 release. Of course, this really couldn't have come at a worse time. As is expected, new releases cause much higher traffic than usual. Combine this with the fact that we have a brand new wiki out there that has generated a lot of interest and will require a learning curve (i.e. more pages per user), and I think this will probably be one of the highest traffic days that we have ever had. The silver lining here is that openSUSE invested in some really capable hardware. I did some tuning of the remaining server to prepare it for a high traffic load, and it should be able to handle quite a bit of traffic on its own. In addition, I brought the backup server online and tuned it for a higher load as well. It will be on rotation with the remaining primary server on all the sites, except for www.opensuse.org and en.opensuse.org. I left those two out so as to not overwhelm the considerably weaker backup server. With all of this together, I feel confident that the www page and wikis should run smoothly throughout the release. I have gotten some reports of sporadic slowness of the site, but I believe that was coming from iChain. Chris did some work on there, and I believe that resolved the problem. I just want you all to be aware that we not at our normal capacity going into this release. While we should be ok, please do me a favor and check out the site periodically for uptime and responsiveness. If anything seems out of the ordinary, please contact me right away. What would be especially useful is if any of you have some kind of web diagnostic tool, and send me any reports if the site is being slow. Without specific data and being unable to duplicate the problem, I will only be able to pinpoint the problem so far. Hello wiki team! As in the LTSP topic, Rajko has accepted my appliance for membership to the wiki team, it seems proper to me to introduce myself! My name is Tim Möhlmann, nick Muhlemmer on the wiki. Userpage: http://en.opensuse.org/User:Muhlemmer Although my last name is an old German name and my nick is German for trashcan (am I correct?), don't be tempted to assume I am German. I come from the Netherlands and life in a nice coastal village called Middelburg. My occupation is Marine Service Engineer and I'm specialised in nuts, bolts, pipes, pumps and electrics. I have a very strong interest in Marine automation, as this touches one off my hobby's: Computers. Throughout the years this became discovering and using linux, openSUSE being my favourite distro. It's a quite similar story like the most off us, seeing to much of window's BSOD, I started looking for alternatives and found Linux. The rest speaks for itself. My biggest frustration in my field of work: more and more automation companies in the marine sector are using Windows as a base OS. Taking in example Norcontroll, the biggest (and it was the most reliable) made a switch from Unix to Windows. Basically as excuse: The "specialists" find it easier to develop Windows based apps. Now I have to tell my costumers: It's not the automation that hangs, it just windows. The only thing I can suggest, reboot every week. As some people may know, rebooting an automation system is a small suicide attempt, there are always some thing not working or properly addressed when the system is back up. Pray it's not our electrical plant or propulsion systems. My big vision, one day build a professional and stable opensource based automation plant for the marine sector. Making it affordable and less binding for service. (If you need norcontroll service, you might have to wait a month or so). Anyway, I'm getting of track here.. back on again: What I do with openSUSE and the wiki * I'm not a wiki expert, neither a linux geek. Although I would like to be, I simply don't have time to be one. * Playing around with Linux is a hobby, which is done in my spare time. * I use the wiki to wright down, or correct what is written, according my own experience. * Doing this I find more to learn and try in Linux, giving me another opportunity to above etc. What can you expect of me in the Wiki-team *Because of my work I'm mostly abroad (last year 210 days), most of the times I work alone. *Although I totally like going to bars and clubs, it's not something I want to be doing every night to kill time. *I use this time for my "hobby" openSUSE and the wiki. *Sometimes I'm on projects that don't have spare time, in this case you will see less to nothing from me. *My days at home are sparse and I've got a girl and house to maintain, also don't expect to much from me in this case. *When I do have time, I'm busy all evening and the long sundays, making up for my downtime. Finally a nice quote, that describes my relation with openSUSE and the wiki: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." [opensuse-wiki] Import/Export For All Groups

Hello All, In response to "New wiki, what now?" article on news.opensuse.org, someone commented on the fact that the import/export functionality is not available to most users. I wanted to point this out to the wiki team so that you can decide among yourselves whether you wish to keep it this way. There is obviously a lot of potential for abuse and quality issues if this function is available to all users. On the other hand, a lot of people might care about preserving the history of the articles and will not be happy if they have no way of doing it. Perhaps the best route might be to do something in between. I could delegate the Import/Export functions to a group such as "Editors", and let them decide on which pages to import into the new wiki. Then we can let the average user know whom they can contact to request an import. This is what I would personally suggest. In addition, it was pointed out that there is an open bug to add an extension for protecting user pages. I'm going to try this out on stage, and if no one has any objections, commit it to the repository and deploy it to production. Now if I can just remember my Berlios credentials... :D -Matt

Hi! I have noticed that the galleries in the new wiki set-up don't look pretty if they are followed by multiple lines of captions. For example, here http://en.opensuse.org/Screenshots#GNOME you can see how the galleries adjust and move up and down to accommodate for varying lines of caption. In my opinion, the gallery image should be top aligned, and not adjust itself to accommodate its captions. KIWI-LTSP Guys, Most articles are transferred. (I noticed 1 or 2 missing) They are now put in the correct namespace, eliminating subpages of LTSP/. All pages are listed in the Navigation section of http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:KIWI-LTSP, Note that the wiki will be switched monday to http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:KIWI-LTSP. The "old" wiki will be put under old-en.opensuse.org. I cleaned up the category section off all the articles. All articles now only belong to [[Category:KIWI-LTSP]]. I made [[Category:KIWI-LTSP]] subcategory of [[Category:Education]] and [[Category:KIWI-Projects]] (These where first under every article, filling up the Category pages. The Portal:LTSP-WIKI is put in all 3 categories + [[Category:Portals]]. For now, Rajko has redirected the old page structure to the new. So that links from external sites don't get broken after transition. Also to keep the navigation between pages working, for now. The links between pages are still to be changed to point to the new page names and not the Redirect pages. If I understood Rajko correctly, the redirects will be removed in time, so make sure other pages outside the wiki will get pointed to the new pagenames! Hi guys, Yesterday I created a new portal. I encountered a small bug. When a sub-page is edited, it doesn't get updated in the static box until I click edit and then save on the Portal main page. When a article is created or removed, the Project main page does get updated, including the earlier edits in other subpage. I remember to encountered the same bug when I edited a custom Navbar template (Template:openSSHNav). The Navbar didn't get updated in the pages showing it, until the edit -save action for each page. Also, working on the Portal I found some things that may be improved: Make templates to create a static box in one command. Create in a template called "Template:Portal intro box" {{Box-header|<big>Welcome to the {{PAGENAME}} Portal</big>|{{FULLPAGENAME}}/Intro|}} {{:{{FULLPAGENAME}}/Intro}} {{Box-footer|}} Create in template called "Template:Portal static box" {{Box-header|{{{1}}}|{{FULLPAGENAME}}/{{{1}}}|}} {{:{{FULLPAGENAME}}/{{{1}}}}} {{Box-footer|}} Create in template called "Template:Portal news box" {{Box-header|In the news|{{FULLPAGENAME}}/News|}} {{{{FULLPAGENAME}}/News}} {{Box-footer|[[{{FULLPAGENAME}}/News/Archive|More news...]]}} And a featured article page template would be nice, where a number of static boxes is created displaying all the Featured articles. I now created one manually on http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:KIWI-LTSP/Featured_article. It would be nice that the number of boxes created here correspond to the max= in {{Random portal component with nominate|max=5|header=Featured article|footer=More articles...| subpage=Featured article}} which is put on the Portal page. If you guys agree, I can create the static box templates. The featured article template however... I got no idea how to realize this. [opensuse-wiki] An effort to improve the suse/openSUSE pages on Wikipedia

Hi all, I'm cross-posting this to both the wiki and the translation lists, as well as on the Romanian list in the hope that I will receive the broadest possible feedback. There are currently several issues with the way openSUSE is represented on non-english wikipedias: 1) There are different articles in different language (i.e. different articles for Suse Linux, openSUSE, SLES, SLED etc or just one article for all, with basically all the variations in between). 2) There is a lack of coverage for subjects related to openSUSE, like OBS, YaST, zypp etc. 3) The information in the articles might be out of date by up to several years. While I understand that it would be difficult for our global and local communities to also actively maintain the Wikipedia articles, I think we could take some steps to facilitate contributing to Wikipedia articles: 1) Find a common way to develop articles about openSUSE. 1.1 What articles should one start with (openSUSE, Suse Linux, openSUSE Project?) and what parts could get separate articles in a second/third phase? 1.2 How should all the articles relate to each other? 1.3 What resources from the openSUSE wiki could be relevant to the various articles? 1.4 How can one minimize the quantity of information that "deprecates" rapidly? 2) Make sure that relevant images from the openSUSE wiki are also available in Wikipedia. Would it be feasible to use Wikimedia Commons as a repository for some of our free images (at least the screenshots)? I know that any mediawiki installation can use commons as an image repository under certain conditions. 3) Encourage the translators to get involved in writing the Wikipedia articles in their language. How can we do that best? If an openSUSE wiki exists in that language, perhaps we could somehow keep in sync a page on the openSUSE wiki and on Wikipedia? 4) Write all of the above on an wiki page (what title should it have?) :) I'm looking forward to your ideas regarding the points raised in this email. Hi, What you opinion on supporting this in the wiki: http://en.opensuse.org/SSH_Tunnels_from_Microsoft_Windows. It's clearly a windows / PuTTY howto. Maybe it's more appropriate mentioning PuTTY somewhere, with some short possibilities. (eg in the openSSH article). I feel that strict Windows Howto's, that don't really touch openSUSE (maybe only when you are actually accessing an openSSH server which is maybe running on Linux and than maybe on openSUSE), don't belong in the wiki. How to we bind http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:YaST with rest of portals and wiki? The structure of fields is a bit strange with one 100% width at the bottom, which produces large blank area in the middle, and completely missing related and navigational stuff. We've created some pages in the "old" wiki for the strategy discussion and I'd like to move these to the new wiki. Currently the pages are reachable via http://en.opensuse.org/Documents/Strategy Where should these life in the new wiki? I'll do the move myself, just need some guidance on the location - and will then ask for review when done. Also, I just send a reference to what the Meego project does for Developer engagement. I'd like to collect such references for community building in our wiki. Any ideas for a good location? Help docs for editing Portal pages will be added to the rest of the help pages as time permits. For now, if basic instructions below don't answer you questions, just ask. Basic is that content is added or edited in subpages using Edit link on the top right side of frame title line. Example: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:11.2 Frame title: Related portals link edit Click edit and it will open http://wiki.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Portal:11.2/Related_portals&action… Do changes. Check how it looks like with "Show preview" button under the edit field. When satisfied, click "Save page" button. Saved page is now: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:11.2/Related_portals You can see that is not the actual portal page. Click on link Portal:11.2 and you will be back to the: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:11.2 Check layout of portal pages. New content should not go out of the frame, or garble the Portal page in any way. When all is done, please report here, so that someone from wiki team can review changes and approve them for publishing. Hi there, I'm currently (and already some time now) busy with editing, creating and upgrading articles about openssh and prepare them for transition. At the moment there are many different articles about forwarding X display through a ssh connection, only under different names. There are some I encountered on my search on the wiki, although I didn't write them down. (At that time I thought I was only going to change a few words in the openSSH article). When this is finished I want to start on one good article about X forwarding, taking all the information in the existing articles, saving to check and move all this pages. Most of them are incomplete or obsolete anyway. Is there some Temporary namespace, where I can create a page to make this inventory (for myself). And if anyone encounters or knows an article, throw it on the list. I know your really busy with the transition right now, If I can help, just shout. But, I'm not a wiki expert. Neither a Linux expert, but I see the wiki as a handy notebook for myself, how I got things working. Since, the wiki and other Internet sources are not always 100% correct. That's how I started with this. Just a small note on my current work, you might see that some links to articles are not working. That's because it's already prepared to serve the new wiki. Anyway, the links are just quickly created to have something there (In the knowledge bar and at the bottom. I will invest more time in them after the transition. Hi, I have a question regarding the current plan and the status of the Wiki migration. If I remember correctly the plan was to switch to the new english (and the german?) wiki before 11.3 comes out, is that still the plan? When looking at the Todo-Page at [1] one still finds a lot of free spaces in the list in the "Who"-Column. Is the list up to date? Or does that matter at all? It would be great if the Wiki Team could clearify on this a bit because I think the new wiki is quite important for a nice 11.3 "Party" and it would be good to know about the facts there.
