[opensuse-wiki] Extending search function default scope

Extending search function default scope can appear attractive to reach as many articles as possible, but it will defeat purpose of namespaces and opportunity to have distribution presentation created in Main as first thing that new user can see. I some earlier mails I commented on pushing SDB in a first plan, as not the best option. We want to help users with problems to find solution, but we don't want to push solutions to problems to every user. I'm pretty sure from Coolo's statistics page and number of posts in forums and mail lists that number of users that have problems is much smaller then those that have installation just working. Ditto, default search that can be found on the top of every page should work on Main and Portal namespaces. [opensuse-wiki] Change in Template:Intro

The http://wiki.opensuse.org/Template:Intro is changed to be lesser intrusive then the old one. The idea came from http://www.oxygen-icons.org/?page_id=2 . ** Advantages: The same template can be used as: * Intro * Info * Note * With change in color of the bar plus bold text "WARNING:" it will become template Warning * With quotes around the text and italic text, it can be used as template Quote * With change in vertical bar color, and possibly adding background color it can be base for miscellaneous Cleanup, Delete, Delete now, maintenance messages. It fits fine in Bento color scheme. IMO, it fits better with ideas introduced with "Point here" template. ** Disadvantage: Looking on other pages that use Intro template, it doesn't look very good, and the only reason is that we took over, from old wiki, too many colorful, framed, templates that are in no good relation to Bento style. I'm looking now how to list categories without breaking readability. Current problem is that list of categories, using category tree, writes over preformatted text. One solution is to use 70/28 split: <div style="width:70%;float:left;clear:left;"> ... Article text ... </div> <div style="width:28%;background:#f6f6f6;border:1px dotted #669900;padding:.5em;float:right; clear:right;height:auto;overflow:auto;"> ... Navigation ... </div> The result is like: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Help:Sandbox The red line is left to mark edge, of content area. IMO, it looks fine, but leaves too little space to article in case that we want to add some images or diagrams to the text. I can't underscore enough that guessable names are important way to keep wiki simple for readers and contributors, and not to break search function. It is the way how Wikipedia works and it works better then our previous wiki. Guessable name without being expert in the field are paramount. They help every wiki structure and when absent there is no structure that will make wiki easy to search and browse. [opensuse-wiki] Special pages as "navigation help" to wiki visitors

I used them, we used them, and for wiki editors is OK to use them, but if we point regular visitors to them then we failed. Here is recent example that triggered this comment: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Special:PrefixIndex/marketing Special pages are tools for wiki editors, not casual visitor. First what is wrong is general concept that wiki visitors should use Special pages to find something. If we did not provide navigation the way we want, or if we are too lazy to create one, or we have no time to do that, we are in a trouble. For the last case (no time) we have to spend more time marketing wiki collaboration. :) (don't look at me, I do what I can in that respect, but I can't be in all places at once) Second is that it will list only pages in Main namespace, where very few of articles with title "Marketing <some topic>" belong. The 3 files that I found there are moved to openSUSE namespace, as they are all work files and belong there, not in the Main. [opensuse-wiki] Ideas on Weekly News structure

Main namespace article "Weekly News" . No need for "openSUSE Weekly News" as it is not published in New York Times, but on openSUSE wiki. The article can be filled with {{:Archive:Weekly News 101}} and the only change that main article "Weekly News" would require is change in a number for current issue. Advantage is that once article is created, it can be copied to archive and present from there. [opensuse-wiki] new wiki.o.o ...

Good morning, While try to use the wiki these days I run into several issues. As far as I understand the en.o.o is about to go away. So I need to add new stuff to wiki.o.o, right ? My problem starts that I don't find my pages anymore. I still need en.o.o just to find the pages, because I don't find anything usefull via the wiki.o.o search due to the new layout. Try to search for "Build Service" or "Build Service Concepts". Both works great in en.o.o wiki, but wiki.o.o search does not deliver a single entry which makes sense to me due to the new layout. Another problem is that the Concept page works via category lists now. This is less ovious to use and frankly, I consider that these were pages which I and other wiki novice users do maintain. This does increase the hurdle for us to add/modify concept pages. Frankly, I stopped working on the wiki pages since wiki.o.o exists, since I lost completly the overview what is going on. But since the wiki is our main documentation point this is no longer a solution for us. I need also to know which links will break when wiki.o.o will become the default one. Will en.o.o go away ? Will wiki.o.o get moved ? If something like this happens will break all our links in our OBS products. Please tell if you think we missuse wiki/en.opensuse.org for OBS (actually we plan to add way better integrated help links, which is currently blocked by the unknown state of the wiki). In that case we need to setup our own wiki, where we can rely on. But that would be a not wanted extra effort for us. thanks adrian PS: sorry if I sound a bit negative, but it really blocks OBS release atm. PPS: The new pages in wiki.o.o look really much better then the old ones. So what about just move these pages to en.o.o ? The new wiki has a namespace concept, see http://wiki.opensuse.org/Help:Namespace and http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki To re-use that would mean a portal page Portal:SUSE_Studio as entry point, official documentation in the main namespace (review is turned on there) and collaborative documentation, team stuff etc in openSUSE:. We also have SDB: which historically comes out of the SUSE support database and contains help for solving specific problems (also with reviewing enabled). The other option, which would seperate the studio docs completely from opensuse structure and rules would be an own namespace, which the wiki team would like to avoid for consistency reasons, but it would be possible. [opensuse-wiki] Studio docs in the opensuse wiki

Hi Studio Team! The opensuse wiki is currently transferred [1] to a temporary mediawiki instance at wiki.opensuse.org to rework the overall structure and content of the current 'punk' wiki at en.opensuse.org. We (the wiki team) also updated the wiki to the recent mediawiki codebase, added new extensions[2] and included the new bento [3] design which will be the default for all opensuse pages soon. The plan is to have transferred all relevant content and have the new wiki in a good state at least until the 11.3 release (15.07.) and replace en.o.o So we need to decide how to continue with the Studio docs. I created an example page at [4] that shows how it could look like to migrate the existing docs to the new wiki. If needed we could also offer an own namespace for the studio docs, inclusion of a custom css and navigation boxes for these pages or activate page reviewing. If you really need these features we should discuss with the wiki team. To transfer the pages, please stick to the wiki rules [5]. [opensuse-wiki] Libzypp history

I noticed on http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Libzypp that there is a section for libzypp history. Saigkill helped me find http://en.opensuse.org/Zypper/Versions but I think this is incomplete. I found a more detailed history on wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZYpp I figure if we combine them, then we will have the complete history that the libzypp history deserves.
