[opensuse-wiki] Article titles
I can't underscore enough that guessable names are important way to keep wiki simple for readers and contributors, and not to break search function. It is the way how Wikipedia works and it works better then our previous wiki. Guessable name without being expert in the field are paramount. They help every wiki structure and when absent there is no structure that will make wiki easy to search and browse. Example: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Category:Marketing-meetings/Archive will tell the same with: Category:Marketing meetings archive that is just normal talk, not geek +/&$# . -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Oh yes! Not only are they bad for article names but the reason why a lots of people use them (Navigation) is bogus too. People please get sub-pages out of your system! Don't use them! They provide no value at all in the new wiki! Navigational links are either direct Bananas --> Peeling Or over Portal(s) Food --> Portal:Bananas --> Apes There is absolutely no use for sub-pages in this scheme. Yes, I read that earlier from you - Have in mind - will implement it tonight ;-) (make changes to the ones I did).
Navigational links are either direct
Bananas --> Peeling
Or over Portal(s)
Food --> Portal:Bananas --> Apes
There is absolutely no use for sub-pages in this scheme.

My basic funda behind naming the marketing articles was that (and 'is'), all should start with "Marketing" so that when xyz users stumbles somewhere,searching a bit he can find his way because all Marketing related articles would start with 'Marketing' . :-)
Example: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Category:Marketing-meetings/Archive will tell the same with: Category:Marketing meetings archive that is just normal talk, not geek +/&$# .
You know what,I actually created something like that but i don't know what happened I sticked with - Category:Marketing-meetings/Archive.So Yes I will make the change by tonight ;-) -- Regards SJ (Shayon) openSUSE Member http://en.opensuse.org/User:wwarlock http://shayonj.wordpress.com/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Marketing in the title is to allow other to use: "[<team>|<project>] meetings archive", or "[<team>|<project>] <any common topic>". If we have "Marketing" as starting word for browsing that is useful only in Special:AllPages. or miserably organized category structure, then we failed.
Example: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Category:Marketing-meetings/Archive

So what should be the correct option, I am sorry I am not able to grasp this thing completely ?

Rajko, Henne, you make some great comments in these discussions. Do we have a good FAQ that is updated with the information after discussing here? If we don't have one, please start one! Easier to tell then to do :) Time for everything that I want to do is something that I miss the most. We have to decide how to list them. Maybe in the Main namespace simple title "FAQ" that will list all including non existing "Wiki FAQ". The simple title would be to provide people that use search with direct jump to list of all pages with answers on common (anticipated) questions. Sticking with Portal:<topic> in this case will be far from helpful, and extending default search beyond Main namespace will counter point to have namespaces. As this thread is devoted to article title topic, I'll collect comments here before writing FAQ and/or "Help:Article_title". Besides slash we use a dash(-) instead of plain space very often (me too, and very recently too). There is no difference in informational value if title contains separators different then space. http://wiki.opensuse.org/Category:Marketing [+] Marketing-archives (1) [+] Marketing-resources (5) [+] Marketing-team (3) All three category article titles are perfectly valid without dash. [+] Marketing archives (1) [+] Marketing resources (5) [+] Marketing team (3) The only difference is that I can guess "Marketing archives" in a first try, it is just plain English, but with any other separator then space, I have to take chances with: [+] Marketing/archives (1) [+] Marketing/resources (5) [+] Marketing/team (3) or [+] Marketing:archives (1) [+] Marketing:resources (5) [+] Marketing:team (3) or [+] Marketing#archives (1) [+] Marketing#resources (5) [+] Marketing#team (3) Each separator different from space brings side effects in. 1) Slash (/) creates subpages, and download with wget will give only name after last slash 2) Colon (:) opens chance to misinterpretation by MediaWiki software, and makes parsing with a scripts a bit more sophisticated task, then it should be 3) Hash (#) is section title within article -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

http://wiki.opensuse.org/Category:Marketing
[+] Marketing-archives (1) [+] Marketing-resources (5) [+] Marketing-team (3)
All three category article titles are perfectly valid without dash.
[+] Marketing archives (1) [+] Marketing resources (5) [+] Marketing team (3)

Each separator different from space brings side effects in. 1) Slash (/) creates subpages, and download with wget will give only name after last slash 2) Colon (:) opens chance to misinterpretation by MediaWiki software, and makes parsing with a scripts a bit more sophisticated task, then it should be 3) Hash (#) is section title within article
Okay , thanks for making "-" thing clear.So now lets proceed with normal title (with space and no /,-,#) .I see you made changes to one - thanks,rest I'll do it by tonight. just notice that spaces are translated by Mediawiki to "_" (underscore), what is misleading as "Marketing_meetings_archive" and "Marketing meetings archive" are the very same page like you can see here: http://fr.opensuse.org/Utilisateur:Jdd thanks for your amazing work :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-support-the-Linux-Documentation-Project/3720... http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-fan-page-of-Claire-Dodin/106485119372062?v... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

thanks for your amazing work :-) jdd
Thanks jdd. You see, I'm every day doing something on the wiki and it is for me normal that underscore and space characters are equivalents from the MediaWiki perspective, but for those that don't spend so much time there that is another fact that has to be mentioned. -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
