Hi,
a few days ago there have been some complaints about the new project
home page being English only (www.opensuse.org). Since this issue is
still open I'd like to restart the discussion (not without adding my 2
cents first, of course ;-) ).
Summary of the previous discussion:
* new homepage is English only - this is a step back
* new homepage should honour the browser's locale
or
a world map splash screen should be added
My 2 Cents:
* The new Home page mainly consists of
- three slogans (Get It / Discover It / Build It)
- three fixed terms (Download / Wiki / Build Service)
- and a sentence explaining what the project is about.
It probably doesn't make sense to translate the slogans and the
phrase "Build Service" also do not think that translations
for "Wiki" exist. "Download" is probably understood by every person
using the internet. So it really boils down to translating the
sentence about the project. I am really not sure whether this is
really important. However, this sentence hadn't been there before, so
I do not agree that the new homepage is a step back in this regard.

Just a suggestion, http://www.opensuse.org/ got a new layout, which
looks a lot nicer than the old one, and the Get It link there looks
very nice and professional, but shouldn't the wiki site get a new
layout as well? It would be more inviting. I don't know about you
guys, but I always love to see a new layout or design on one of my
favorite sites.
Maybe I'm wrong and it seems nice and new enough? I'm open to any
comments about this. It wouldn't serve much more than a cosmetic
purpose, but it still may be time for an upgrade.

Pushing that page isn't a bad idea. With 10.3 on its way, it may draw
many of the Chinese people to it, as it will the rest of the world.

Hi guys,
Two suggestions for the development download page:
* Add some red-ish writing near the top saying something along the
lines of "this is a beta, don't use it on production machines, there
will be bugs.."
* Add a link to the Most Annoying Bugs List near the top as well, so
people know what they're letting themselves in for and hopefully to
avoid more duplicates in bugzilla
Kind thoughts,

I agree with this statement. I have been to many foreign sites that
recognize something about my computer that tell the site that I speak
English (or live in an English speaking area), and the language is
either adjusted to English, or the drop down menu pops up with English
highlighted and expects me to click on it. Shouldn't we incorporate
this into the site? Opensuse 10.3 will draw attention, and the site
should be as welcoming as possible, especially seeing that many will
already be dealing with the post-Windows syndrome after switching. It
really doesn't matter to me much though, either way, I speak english,
so its fine for me, but there are some that may want it differently to
be welcomed.

I just noticed that if the seamonkey option "use system color" is
checked, the www.opensuse.org page become nearly empty (only the links
stay visible) - same with firefox 2
this is a problem! is not the page made with images?

Hi guys,
So we gave a major makeover to the opensuse.org/Communicate page as it
will be getting a lot more exposure and will even be featured directly
into the distribution (like in the SUSE greeter). If you're a
translator please consider porting the page to the new structure so
it's clearer for users! :)

I had recently to use the hp support, and found this page very handy:
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpsupport/index.pl
I'm french and for me this page displayed the page in french and the
proposed link was to the french site
openSUSE home page should work accordingly: provide the link it thinks
good, but letting the choice to the user

I notice new pages have been set online. I missed the annoucement.
specially http://www.opensuse.org/
I have no problem with the layout, except the fact that it's much more
english oriented than the other green lizard one. This is a step
backward...
I have also a problem with the "get it" page, but this one could be
solved easily.
This page is nearly static, as of the text content (of course not for
the links), so it should be possible to have localized ones.
If not I wonder how we can have localized download pages (now, the
wiki download page is completely obsolete)
and don't mistake: this one is a good change (if localized)
thanks
