[opensuse-wiki] English only Home Page

Hi, a few days ago there have been some complaints about the new project home page being English only (www.opensuse.org). Since this issue is still open I'd like to restart the discussion (not without adding my 2 cents first, of course ;-) ). Summary of the previous discussion: * new homepage is English only - this is a step back * new homepage should honour the browser's locale or a world map splash screen should be added My 2 Cents: * The new Home page mainly consists of - three slogans (Get It / Discover It / Build It) - three fixed terms (Download / Wiki / Build Service) - and a sentence explaining what the project is about. It probably doesn't make sense to translate the slogans and the phrase "Build Service" also do not think that translations for "Wiki" exist. "Download" is probably understood by every person using the internet. So it really boils down to translating the sentence about the project. I am really not sure whether this is really important. However, this sentence hadn't been there before, so I do not agree that the new homepage is a step back in this regard. -- Regards Frank Frank Sundermeyer, Technical Writer, Documentation SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuernberg Tel: +49-911-74053-0, Fax: +49-911-7417755; http://www.opensuse.org/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Reality is always controlled by the people who are most insane (Dogbert) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

it's a step back because it's clearly state that it's english first. Html i made to make such things unusefull, why not use it? previous page was showing all the languages allowed at once (and this whas already discussed for a very long time, this also a big step back: let the community behind and decide alone) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://gourmandises.orangeblog.fr/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Probably you are right since these slogans are likely kind of "trademarks" (and particularly in my language translation of them would be funny).

I think these phrases (and any other on the page) should be translated. Moreover, think about the checkbox, it's very user-unfriendly. -- Regards, Nikolay Derkach --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

I agree with this. However, the language selection list should point to the user language instead of selecting english as default. IMHO what it really matters right now is the translation of software.opensuse.org Best Regards. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Hello together, I'm a german, and think that english is the most spoken language regarding the computer. In the beginning, english was a must have. So I think it is really ok to have the "first page" in english.

seems the majority disagrees with me ;-). So once the new wiki skin is online I will look into it. The following features should be implemented: a) language selector (and the surrounding boxes) should point to the language the browser is set to b) strings outside the three boxes should be translated to the language the browser is set to (if we do a, this should be trivial to implement) Agreed? BTW: If you are experienced in PHP, you are welcome to implement it, of course. Just contact Robert or me. -- Regards Frank Frank Sundermeyer, Technical Writer, Documentation SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuernberg Tel: +49-911-74053-0, Fax: +49-911-7417755; http://www.opensuse.org/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Reality is always controlled by the people who are most insane (Dogbert) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
