Subject: HCL Week

From: Dean Martin <deano_ferrari(a)hotmail.com>
To: rajko(a)opensuse.org
Hi
The moderators at openSUSE forums are currently discussing an idea to promote
'Update HCL Week' in an effort to encourage as many members as possible to
participate with adding (or updating) as much hardware info as possible. What
is the Wiki team's thoughts about this? No date set yet, but I'd like to see
an announcement or banner in the forums when date has been set etc
Cheers,
Dean

I can't take on that alone, as it requires a bit of thought what to do, and I
have not much time left.
It is opportunity clean up HCL, setup new layout, etc.

http://dewiki.opensuse.org/Diskussion:Paket_Repositories
(bis Ende Montag).
Dear users and makers of openSUSE,
does someone else like also to contribute to the discussion on the
matter how a directory for software packages and metadata
- in English in openSUSE: repository, pl.: repositories -
should be named in the new openSUSE-Wiki for German language?
This is referring on the term that should be used in names of articles
(apart from redirects) and in the text (apart from introductions).
In case you are interested it would be nice if you would visit the
following discussion page/talk page:
http://dewiki.opensuse.org/Diskussion:Paket_Repositories
(until the end of Monday).
Have a lot of fun

Hello,
I'd like to propose to install the "WikiEditor" extension from the
MediaWiki Usability Initiative.
"WikiEditor" is currently used on Wikipedia - edit any page there to see
it in action.
Compared to the currently used editor, it has several additional
features:
- dialog to link to other pages with auto-completion
- formatting toolbar (for headlines, bullet items etc.)
- a list of special characters (clickable to insert them)
- included help for the most important wikitext formattings
Opinions?
BTW: If needed, I can give some advice how to install this extension.
However, it shouldn't be needed - it's quite easy to install ;-)

Hello,
another proposal for an extension - however this one has not only pros,
but also some cons.
The extension I'm proposing is CategorySelect - basically a category
tree in the edit mode to select the categories an article is in (see
attached screenshot).
Pro / features:
- easy selection of categories
- categories are listed as tree view - this means that users can select
the best-matching sub-category instead of a generic main category
easily
- category tree can be collapsed and expanded (number of open levels at
page load is a config option)
- root category can be specified for each namespace
Con:
- [[Category:whatever]] is stripped from the wikitext editor
(but you can still type [[Category:foobar]] to add a category)
- opening of the subcategory notes doesn't work in Konqueror :-(
Probably a javascript issue, I didn't have time to debug it yet.
(It's not a real issue in the wiki where I'm using this extension (no
Konqueror users there), but it might be a major issue in the openSUSE
wiki.)
Note: We had an older version of this extension installed for some time,
but it was disabled again because it did not have the collapsable
subcategories (which resulted in a long list to scroll).
Regarding installation: I have two patches to fix two small bugs (also
submitted to the MediaWiki bugzilla - one of them was submitted to SVN
trunk already, but not to the 1.16 branch).
If we decide to use this extension, I'll provide the details of the bugs
and the patches I'm using.

How to adjust usage of search MediaWiki:GoogleSearch? Now by search through
google in ru.opensuse.org search it is produced on en.opensuse.org [1].
Whether also it is possible to get somehow access to adjustments of this
mechanism for transfer of elements of the interface (button Search)?

Hello,
@wiki team: this mail includes a proposal for a major change for
Template:Point_here to fix a display bug (hidden content).
(Sorry for switching mailinglists again, but this is something I
have to bring up on the -wiki mailinglist.)

I just checked this. <pre> already has overflow:auto (which means it
gets scrollbars if needed).
The problem is the <table style="width:98%;"> (icon + text right of it)
which is wider than the <div> around.
Additionally, the <div> around the table uses
<div style="overflow:hidden; [...]">
Changing it to "overflow:auto;" adds a scrollbar - it looks quite ugly,
but at least works ;-) Nevertheless, it isn't the best solution.
The overflow:hidden comes from
http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Point_here which us used on all portals.
I played around a bit, and IMHO this is at least some strange behaviour:
The <pre> can widen the <td> around it - even if the parent element has
a width restriction set :-/
I'm not sure if this is valid behaviour or a browser bug - but then it
would be a bug in (at least) Firefox and Konqueror.
The good news: I can offer a fully working solution (with the scrollbar
only at the <pre>), but it requires a full rewrite of Template:Point_here.
On the positive side, we would get rid of the table layout ;-)
Instead of the table, use the following code:
<div style="overflow:hidden; margin:.2em;"><!-- do we really need overflow:hidden? -->
<div style="margin-left:15px; width: 48px; float:left;">
<!-- begin icon column content -->
<a href="/index.php?title=File:Icon-package.png&filetimestamp=20100615144104" class="image"><img height="48" width="48" alt="Icon-
package.png" src="/images/thumb/3/39/Icon-package.png/48px-Icon-package.png"></a>
<!-- end icon column content -->
</div><div style="margin-left:70px; border-left:1px solid #babdb6; padding-left:.5em; padding-top:1px;">
<!-- padding-top:1px looks silly, but with 0px the border starts 10px below :-( -->
<!-- begin text column content -->
<p><b>How to try Tumbleweed?</b>
</p><p><br>
</p>
<ul><li> Add Tumbleweed to your YaST or zypper installation repositories and enable autorefresh:
</li></ul>
<pre>zypper ar --refresh \
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ \
Tumbleweed
</pre>
<ul><li> Do a distro update from Tumbleweed as needed. The first time you will need to accept the GPG key:
</li></ul>
<pre>zypper dup --from Tumbleweed
</pre>
<!-- end text column content -->
</div>
<div style="clear:left"></div> <!-- just to be sure -->
</div>
I did not count pixels ;-) but it looks about the same as the table-based
version - with the advantage that <pre> gets scrollbars if needed :-)
@Wiki team: The Point_here template is used on every portal page, which also
means changing it could break a lot of pages ;-) Therefore I'm asking first:
- Are you ok with changing the Point_here template to the code listed above?
- Are there any side effects or "special" portal pages I should be aware of?

Yeah I'd wish I wouldn't have to be :-/ But the wiki is developing into
a real mood killer for everyone involved with it, including me. We have
put in a lot of work to get things organized only to get yelled at and
ignored.
As you can see we're already on the way back into the dark ages where
the wiki is only a undisciplined information dump. This not only hurts
the people who came up with a nice concept but even more so our readers
and therefor in turn the project. That troubles me indeed.

Hello All,
Today is my last official day as the openSUSE wiki system administrator. I wanted to write to this mailing list to express my appreciation for all of the wonderful people on the wiki team and for the work that they have done in improving the openSUSE community. There have been a number of challenges and disagreements along the way, and we still have a long way to go, but I feel that we have managed to come together in delivering a world-class knowledge solution for the community.
The subject of this message is a little misleading, as this is not truly a farewell. I plan to continue on as a wiki contributor, and possibly even as a developer. I will also probably help out on the system administration side of things until the new engineer gets up to speed on the www and wiki architecture.
Like many of you, I believe that openSUSE is the most solid (not to mention the best looking) Linux distribution out there, and I am proud to have been able to contribute to the project in my own small way.
Thank you,
-Matt
