The http://en.opensuse.org/Tasks list is by now quite large .
It is not always easy to find what to do and what is already done.
Well defined tasks are important for success of any project.
For each participant is easier to pick up some well defined job than to
make guesswork from present offer what is the most important, how far
article should be developed, what is the best way to structure article.
This is specially true for projects in the initial phase like openSUSE
wiki.
It is time to reorganize Tasks page to list tasks by groups with
additional information:
* urgency
* planned subtasks
* proposed article structure
* who is working on it
* what is already done
* ...
Some smart template from our template specialists would make this
easier, or maybe there is some other way like bugzilla for software,
that has all this included, and tasks page should contain only link to
this task tracking tool.
==Tasks==

Any ideas how to do this will help to do more with lesser work.

Hi,
first, a big "Thank you" to Rajko for making this really cool suggestion
for the splash screen. Seems that we will reach an agreement very soon
with this proposal.
I polished the graphics a bit, added the openSUSE writing and a search
box and put it all together with html and css:

Last week's proposals are now located at
http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/stage_2/

Hi,
as announced, here come the second round of splash screen proposals.
Actually not much has changed in the original (I "bleached" the
background a bit, added more padding between the links and the page
borders and removed "select your language").
The second proposal has the language links circle around the logo.
1. http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/splash.html
2. http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/splash_circle.html
I really like Christian's idea with the language cookie on user request
and houghi's proposal that it could be changed in the wiki
preferences - I will talk with darix about it.

On every page, but especially the starting page of a language and probably
the generic start page as well, you have a link to
http://en.opensuse.org/Download
Instead of being able to download, you get a lot of information that you
apparently must read, making it look like SUSE (or Linux) is complicated.
Only at the bottom do I see two versions. I must take the olderst version.
If I don't, I will have problems.
I then arrive at another page that I must read (Is SUSE really that hard?)
What I would prefere is that http://en.opensuse.org/Download only holds
the latest version for the standard end-user, e.g. 10.1, two or three
links: How to install and additional information.
The 'How to install' could be done in several steps:
1) Downloading and burning the iso
2) Booting and running
3) What when you log in for the first time (Add repo's)
4) Installing programs
5) ...
The additional information could hold links to Alpha and Beta software,
all information that is now given on the pages and that probably most
people don't read anyway.
Please comment (before I start making changes)

Hi,
the latest FPR (Front page redesign ;-)) ) thread is starting to get
complex, so with new proposals (stage 2), I am starting a new thread.
Hope it's OK for you - this way it will definitely be easier for me to
assign your comments to the correct proposal(s).
For this very reason, I would like to separate threads concerning the
Home page and the Splash screen, too.
This is about the homepage.
Enough "disclaiming" ;), here are two new proposals:
1. http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/home.html
2. http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/home_jdd.html
The old (aka yesterday's) proposal is now located at
http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/stage_1/home.html
Comments:
on 1.)
- changed the width of the columns - the left column is less wide now
(requested by jdd
- added/changed the links in "Getting openSUSE" (requested by houghi)
- replaced "Other languages (box)" with "Article of the Month"
(requested by jdd, darix and houghi)
- added the [[openSUSE:Browse]] link to the left nav (called
it "Sitemap", not sure if this is fortunate)
- re-arranged the links in the topnav (requested by houghi) and added
padding to the left (requested by peter)
on 2.)
- contains all the changes of 1.) plus jdd's proposal not to split the
content related navigation between top and left nav:
* moved the "Participation" links from top nav to left nav. Therefore
had to create another section (Participate), otherwise
the "openSUSE" link list would be too long
* moved the "Personal" links into the top nav
* moved the page headline and content 1.2em up ;-))
Things I did not implement, because ...
- removing the Wiki Toolbox from the left nav:
This was implemented when we started openSUSE way back last year. The
toolbox only showed up when a user was logged in. We changed it to be
visible all the time on public demand
- moving interwiki links to some less prominent place
I am against it because of two reasons:
* when reading an article on the English openSUSE web, a user
can easily see wether this article is available in his/her language
or not. So a user can quickly switch the language on a certain
article without having to search/scroll for the language links
* almost the same goes for translators/would be translators. With the
current position it's easier to see whether an article needs to be
translated or not
What's more - with the current labeling ("In other languages") it is
very clear which purpose this set of links serves, so I do not see
that it confuses the user (same goes for the Wiki toolbox)
- removed the green headline boxes in the center content
I really liked them (copied from wikipedia), IMHO they add a bit of
eye candy to the page. Apart from that, they are only used as
headlines of special topics rather than headlines of linklists.
- green border around left menu
Technically not possible with the current layout. We would have to
give up the end-to-end green bar (as it is now on en.opensuse.org).
Apart from that, it does not look good -IMHO.
- changed font sizes
Currently all font related styles are wikipedia (monobook) default.
I'd like to stick with them.
If you think different, let me know.
A note on the content:
I just took what I thought was reasonable. I f you would like to see
other topics, different wording, etc., tell me.
BTW: (A) new proposal(s) for the splash screen will follow, stay
tuned ;)

Hi,
two weeks ago I promised to get more involved into the front page
discussion. In order to have something to start with, I made a proposal
that tries to bring the suggestions mentioned at
http://en.opensuse.org/Frontpage_redesign/List_of_Proposal_Pages
together:
Splash screen for www.opensuse.org:
http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/splash.html
Home page for en.opensuse.org:
http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/home.html
Please note that these pages have not been optimized for different
browsers, yet - I have developed them on Firefox, so they are "Best
viewed with Firefox" ;-)
Some explanations:
Splash screen:
It's intended to resemble the 10.1 installation boot screen. The
background image is courtesy of Jakub Steiner (thanks a lot).
Home page:
I picked up jdd's suggestion to simplify the navigation. The top
navigation now is entirely dedicated to one topic - "Participation" in
my proposal.
Apart from the wiki toolbox and the language menu, the left nav now only
contains one section which holds the 7-9 most important links.
In moving the page's headline into the top of the page I tried to seize
jdd's suggestion to make more efficient use of the space at the top of
the page and to separate the logo from the left nav (to me it now looks
more as being part of the top of the page rather than of being part of
the left nav).
The content (center) part of the page is based on Rabauke's proposal
(The German Proposal).
If you want to experiment with the html/css yourself, get all files from
http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/
Please let me know what you think.
BTW: Please note that changes within the content area only affect the
home page. Changes to top nav, left nav and footer affect all wiki
pages.
Every link that is present on the front page (regardless where it is)
also affects the wikis in other languages - it is my belief that the
pages that are linked to from the homepage should be part of "must be
translated" set.

The wiki grows and is more and more difficult to browse. I
propose we think about new kind of Top level Categories. I
dropped some ideas here:
http://en.opensuse.org/Top_Level_Categories
I think we shoud avoid some kind of basic names (help,
documentation, HOWTOs) that are too undefinites for this level
These TLC should give access to a tree, with SLC (secondary
Level categories).
These two kinds (TLC and SLC) should only be visible in
category pages themselves (not on ordinary wiki pages)
your opinion?

Hi,
I just have a question.
I am now in the process of talking to others (upcoming volunteers in
the portuguese wiki translation) and there are some "important" words
that might be translated to a different one when the discussion
finishes. One such case is the word Bug, which I translated to Erro,
but we might change the translation to Defeito.
My question is: is it ok if we change the translation of this word
later, after the portuguese wiki is created, or does this (and the
other specially requested to be translated in the e-mail) have some
special importance, that their translation cannot be changed
afterwards?

Hi,
All the pages from the basic set are translated, plus a few more.
Also, some new people will soon come to help maintain and improve the
number of pages translated to portuguese.
Given this, I am requesting that the Portuguese (PT) wiki be created.
Best regards to all,
Hugo Costelha
