Hi,
thanks to your great feedback (a special thanks to Christian Boltz, who
discovered most bugs) I managed to eliminate hopefully all bugs from
the new wiki skin and now proudly present the first "Release Candidate"
on
http://en.test.opensuse.org/
At the moment I know of only one open issue:
- the logo display when using very small font sizes in Gecko/KHTML
browsers (not sure whether this is resolvable at all)
BTW: An RC1 for download.opensuse.org will follow ASAP.

Hey Guys,
There is no link to the "buy it" choice on the "get and install" link
and the "Boxed version" link is a little subdued. Could we \ should we
make this link a little more central to the acquiring it process?
Selling the idea of buying installation support is a good idea, no?
I bring this up after reading today's education.zdnet.com and it doesn't
mentioned as a choice for acquisition.
thanks for all you do.

Thanks for pointing this out. I have a few issues with the line of
reasoning here:
I'm not so sure that the level of abstractness adopted now isn't
considered dull or boring. The people I asked seemed to agree.
Secondly, it really goes to the other extreme of inferring that
landscapes are necessarily obtrusive or detract too much from what's
on the desktop. This is an incorrect dilemma as they're not mutually
exclusive: you _can_ have a background that is beautiful and yet still
doesn't steal your attention all the time. I agree an animal shouldn't
be used for the background, or any other very strong statement (or
noisy background: i.e. a waterfall). Something serene is ideal.
I really disagree with the idea that the background wallpaper should
be made to be changed. Of course users have this option, but you're
quite mistaken if you think that all users customise their background.
There are 7 computers in my house: 3 have the default wallpaper still.
Some users really never bother to customise the way their desktop is.
Furthermore, even users that customise their desktops share
screenshots of the desktop frequently when they've just tried out the
distribution (and hence with the default background).
The extract also doesn't make any mention of branding (which I think
might even be more important than a landscape background).
Kind thoughts,

Hi,
Benji came up on IRC with the following suggestion:
"The openSUSE project is...access to openSUSE. [no change]
Here you can find and join a community....most usable Linux. [added 'and
join']
openSUSE also provides the base for Novell's award-winning SUSE Linux
Enterprise products. Check out Novell today for enterprise Linux solutions
[changeg the binning till ..for Novell]
Thanks to Benji. I think that's proactive inviting people to join and it
sounds more that openSUSE is good enough to be SLE base and does not have a
notion of community = free developers for SLE. But still invite people to
check out SLE.

I've just joined this list, and I saw RajkoM's query about the Arduino page,
so since I'm the one that put it there, I thought I'd just clarify a bit.
1. The main page linked to is the Arduino homepage (the one mentioned by
RajkoM is several jumps away), and as can be seen from that page (near the
bottom), both board and software are open-source. The main purpose of the
project is to offer an easy way to experiment with computer-controlled
electronics, eg as a controller for an electronic musical instrument using
something like Processing, PureData, or SuperCollider (which is what sparked
my initial interest).
2. There is indeed a link to a place you can buy a ready-made board from
(alongside a reference to the fact that you can build it yourself), but that
is only to save time for people who, like me, did their last soldering 20
years ago, and would prefer the convenience of getting a board they know will
work.
3. I have no connection whatsoever with the Arduino project, or the board
seller. I am simply an openSUSE user. I am not promoting a "product" - I am
trying to use my favourite OS to do something other than read the Web or set
up a server (though I added a page about a Subversion server yesterday).
4. The information on the page, while short, is the result of several hours
trial and error, and the aim of presenting it on the wiki was to make it
easier for openSUSE users to get started on physical computing (so that maybe
they will create something new :-) ), without having to go through the same
hoops.
4. My own view is that people use computers to get work done, and while for
some that work may be in IT, for most that is not the case. So while it is
very helpful to have a wiki setting out how to get openSUSE running well, it
is also important, IMO, to have on the wiki some pointers for people as to
what they can actually *do* with openSUSE once they have it running well.
It's all very well saying, "There are 3 dozen music apps on the openSUSE
DVD", but that is really of little help to users (especially new users) if
there aren't some basic hints as to how to get started with those apps.
5. I recognise that this may not be the "official" view (although in fact it
was what the old SuSE manuals tried to do), so I have no objection at all to
the page being deleted if it's considered to be straying outside
the "openSUSE area". :-)

It's not that I against this change, but was this discussed here? If
it did, I missed it...

Sooner or later we need some place for guys that would like to present gadgets
like this that can extend usability of computers and also make openSUSE
attractive to few more people.
The only thing that I don't like is that it is starting with one small
business web page that leads further to:
http://tigoe.net/pcomp/index.shtml
Google "Physical Computing" gives this as a first hit:
http://itp.nyu.edu/~dbo3/physical/physical.html
At the end I'm still not sure where is direct connection between openSUSE as
operating system and gadgets and I would like to hear your opinion.

I'm Zeami, translating wiki to Japanese.
Is it in need of translation to Japanese? Or someone already have done it?
If not, I want do it.
Thanks.
p.s.
The design is cool. But why the basic color is orange? Not green?
