Videos no longer play

After updating to Leap 15.3, some videos stopped working. For example I can no longer play videos from CNN in Firefox, Seamonkey or Chromium, though I can in Edge. On the other hand, Youtube videos are fine. I have looked in Software Management for both codecs and mime for any clues, but nothing. Packman repository is enabled. This is with KDE. Any ideas? tnx jk

Thunderbird

The other day Thunderbird went bananas again and refused to accept any password, old or new. Looking on Firefox, there is a "cure" for this problem, BUT IT ONLY WORKS IN WINDOWS! It will continue to work OK in Linux AFTER you open Windows and follow instructions: In Thunderbird: Options > Security > Passwords Click on Saved Passwords Click on Show Passwords There will be two lines--mailbox incoming and mailbox outgoing. Highlight these lines (must do one at a time) and click Remove Close > click on OK to save options. Close and reopen Thunderbird. It will prompt for a password--I think it has to be a new one. Once you have done the above, and opened T/B in Windows, you will be able to open it in Linux, using the same password you just entered in Windows. AFAIK, it will now work the same on any computer you have, in either system, but have not tried it yet. --doug

After the lightning bolixed up all the computers, I bought a cheap refurb that had Windows10 Home on it. I decided to make a partition for OpenSUSE Leap 15.3. I used gparted to shrink windows and make a partition for Leap 15.3. I downloaded the latest version and installed it. It seems to have wiped out Windows and created for itself something that must be related to hell. Most of the apps that I could download and install on a version from last Fall are gone and unfindable, When I placed the few that I could find on the desktop, when I rebooted they were gone. So was Windows.The only thing I could do that remained was to get rid of the ugly stock desktop and replace it with something pleasant. I have used Linux for almost 20 years, and I really don't understand Windows, on a partially working machine, or want to, but I'm having to use it until I find a new Linux. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? It's like KDE is GONE! The folks here on the mailing lists have been more than helpful to me, and I am grateful to them, but now I will have to find something--probably Mint with a KDE overlay--that I can live with. I will really miss the root version of Dolphin. Written from a badly damaged Windows computer (that has a usable Leap 15 on it) but still reads and sends mail on an ugly app from optimum.net. (Claws mail I never got to work.) --doug

dracut runs mkinitrd after simple application installation

I am running Tumbleweed on a new laptop and just ran into something interesting. I wanted to install gparted to use as a utility, and so after setting up the install, it looks like dracut ran my system through mkinitrd. Just curious as to why - I have both Gnome and KDE installed on my system, but I did not expect this. I don't think gparted executes anything that has to do with the boot sequence, right?

new type of drive designation

Hey... I just got a new laptop, and I am in the process of setting up opensuse on it. For the moment it has tumbleweed, but I plan to set it up with 15.3. One thing I noticed is that the new hard drive nomenclature, or whatever you should call it, is different from what I am used to in the past. In the past the drives would be /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc. In this one, if I plug in a USB stick, the drive letter is /dev/sda. However, the NVMe SDD that I put in it was given the designation /dev/nvme0n1, with each partition being /dev/nvme0n1p1, /dev/nvme0n1p2, etc. This is the first time I have had an NVMe SSD, but when I set up the partitions for the install, I didn't know that it would give it these kinds of letters. Avatars in LDAP & SDDM

I have a Logitech sound system on the machine. It has very giid bass response. When I'm using YouTube, sound is fine. When I'm not viewing anything and YouTube is not active--i.e., from a fresh boot, or any other time, in general--there is a hum from the speaker system. Is there a fix for that? --doug

heat sink for m.2 form drive

I have just purchased this NVMe SSD to replace the stock SSD for my new laptop. One thing that stood out when I switched it in was that the stock m.2 NVMe SSD has like this dark grey silverish looking tape around it. I assume that is for heat dissipation. I couldn't find anything quite like that on line for the new SSD, so I purchased a kit that has a blue heat conducting silica gel pad and a copper plate that you put over each side, all in the m.2 size. I found a youtube video that showed the difference in heat on a chip with and without heat sink pads (not the same kind as I bought), and the difference was remarkable. One drawback I see is the copper plate being stuck there in the middle of my laptop, with pretty tight tolerances, and I am wondering if I should just stick with the silica gel pad. Anyone else have any experience with using these things? Any suggestions on how to proceed? I haven't installed the heat sinks yet - waiting to find out what others might have done. live usb stick with gnome

Could someone point me to where I can download an image to create a live USB stick in order to test run the latest distro? Specifically I want to see if I can test run the gnome desktop on both 15.3 and tumbleweed. I found this link: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.3/iso/ but I can't figure out which iso on that would be the right one. I remember a long time ago you used to be able to specifically download a live usb iso, but I haven't seen that on any of the opensuse websites lately. Thanks :)
