[opensuse] upgraded 42.2 to 42.3, now have black screen.

With 42.2 having gone EOL last week, I figured my office test system ought to be upgraded to 42.3 too - not much chance of anything being fixed on 42.2 anymore. So I ran a 'zypper dup' which seemed to go fine - except a) nfs mounts don't work. I can't mount them manually either. b) instead of a GUI login screen, I get a black screen with a mouse pointer. I can probably figure (a) out in time, but I'm a little stuck with (b). I'm using the Nvidia drivers, they worked fine on 42.2. [opensuse] Lots of OpenGL errors in Chrome/Chromium since today

Hi Everyone, After updating security patches and rebooting, I get a ton of OpenGL related errors in Google Chrome 64 and Chromium 63. Since two versions of the browser are affected, I assume that one of these updates caused that but I don't see which change could have cause this. Anyone else get these (try to start google-chrome in a terminal window to see the messages or use journalctl -b)? As far as I can tell, the NVIDIA drivers haven't changed since two weeks. [opensuse] Need new source for unix utils -- gnu has broken another.

I've used grep to search for strings across all my mailboxes for decades. Found out today, it randomly doesn't work based on whether or not the file contains any text that doesn't comply with POSIX. So if one user has UTF-8 encoding and another, ISO-8859-1, and they are in the same mailbox, according to POSIX, that's a binary file. You have to tell grep to search (and potentially display) binary data -- which can easily through a terminal into weird modes, making it unreadable (see attached example for results of a random binary being listed). Note the last line is the prompt same text as you can see at top of window. mbox files don't do this when you search for strings because when I search for strings I'm looking for something in the text of an email. While I want grep to skip things like compressed files and coredumps, I don't want it judging the quality of "text" that I'm searching through -- but that's what many of the utilities have been modified to do -- if it doesn't fit the POSIX definition of text, then some text utils won't process it. Technically, if the last line of the file doesn't end with a newline, it's also binary (though grep still displays it). Many text utils used to be generally useful -- but now they are having functionality removed to have them only work with POSIX. I suppose no one else really does a quick search through all their email this way any more. Though is this what you'd expect? Sigh.

[opensuse] Leap 42.3 arm - Joy-IT 3,2" Touchscreen?

Hi *, the last days I installed my new raspberry pi3 with openSUSE Leap 42.3 arm edition. I used the XFCE image. Everything seems to work fine except for the Joy-IT 3,2" touchscreen. They have installation instructions for raspbian, but I was not able to adopt them for Leap 8-( Does anyone have some hints on how to achieve this? TIA. Bye. [opensuse] xscreesaver went nuts and I had to uninstall it.

Hi, xscreensaver would trigger every minute or two. Clicking on its banner removed it (without entering the password), but the display was black and I had to click everywhere to restore each window. Even the background had to be clicked to restore the icons. A real pain in the ass. I tried setting it to never start, no use. I had to remove it to be able to keep working on the computer. [opensuse] Yast network config and no firewall

In the systems we set up for data collection, we disable the firewall and do not install the firewall software. They are in vehicle on the road with no connection to the outside world. So we have no use for this feature. In Yast, when configuring a NIC, one always gets a dialog telling that the firewall software is not installed. One can click past it. But, if the firewall is disabled and the software not installed, is this dialog really necessary? I admit it is not a big thing. We don't configure the NICs very often. But it seems odd to single out that one feature and keep nagging about it. (There. [opensuse] howot: leap 42.3 and fail2ban usage in most simple way

Hello list. Newbie with fail2ban, used to work with denyhosts. Leap 42.3 x64 and just fetched in the fail2ban packages > sudo zypper in fail2ban SuSEfirewall2-fail2ban monitoring-plugins-fail2ban now I have the /etc/fail2ban/jail.local file there, and to my understand all I put in there is these two lines for sshd ban testing: > [sshd] > enabled = true That's all right? and then execute the fail2ban-client script with e.g. > /usr/bin/fail2ban-client status > /usr/bin/fail2ban-client start etc.. It now displays one jail, the sshd jail I guess. Any more stuff or howtos and all for me to start with sshd protection? sshd config gracelogin and noroot and stuff is obviously present for a long time thanks for all the hints. [opensuse] How to ask thunderbird to run again the account wizzard?

Hi, Some times one or more of my mail accounts changes or adds new settings. I noticed when setting a temporary system and adding one particular account that the wizard found that IMAP now works, not only POP3 as in the past. So I would like to run the wizard again in existing accounts so that it finds the current settings. Is it possible? Yes, I googled. I found how to bypass the wizard, instructions on how to use it, but not now to tell it to run again in an existing account. What I can do is create a new Thunderbird profile and add the accounts there, one by one, find the new settings, and copy them on the old profile. Seems tedious. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
