[opensuse] My media center goes to sleep and the monitor kills the HDMI input in retaliation

Hi, I was working at my media center, which is running Leap 42.3, and, in retrospect, it seems I hit the sleep function key instead of F8 (on its keyboard, I have to push an extra key to access the function keys, and if I forget, they act as multimedia keys). I had no idea what had happened, but they keyboard did not respond. I tried accessing via ssh, no response... and then I noticed the blinking power led. I hit it, led goes constant but still no response from keyboard. I tried moving cables, including the HDMI cable. I rebooted the machine forcibly, still no response visible. This machine does not boot without keyboard entry (encrypted partition password), so no more ssh was possible. I removed all cables, except hdmi. Nada. Then I tested the machine connecting to the TV set on the sitting room - it worked! So now I knew it was the hdmi cable. I replaced it, but same issue. Then it occurred to me to try the secondary HDMI connector of the display, and it worked! Tried the original cable, it also worked. So not the cable, but the connector. The first HDMI connector on the display (a Samsung) has died. Any idea what has happened? How can a connector die because the computer goes to sleep? Or perhaps the display also went to sleep in that connector, never to wake up again? I have not tried power (full) of the display. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. This worried me since I use grep to search through mail archives. 42.3 includes grep 2.16 dated 2014-01-01. man grep for 2.16 says under the heading ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES: POSIXLY_CORRECT If set, grep behaves as POSIX requires; otherwise, grep behaves more like other GNU programs. The latest grep, 3.1, dated 2017-07-02, contains the same statement. Do you have POSIXLY_CORRECT set? If not, I would not expect to see grep enforcing POSIX. Hi, This machine crashed while YaST was updating it and installing things. Hard crash, the filesystem became R/O (the disk is removable, it is in a caddy). Bad filesystem corruption, automatic fsck on boot failed, had to fsck from another disk. So some files are broken, and I find them now and then. Thunar had broken libraries, for instance. Now there is another when I run VLC: cer@linux-backup:/tmp/mozilla_cer0> vlc 27566544_559085681122620_5011855560279064576_n.mp4 vlc: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib64/libvlc.so.5: file too short So, is there a way to check all rpms in the system? [opensuse] chrony - correct format for an ipv6 address?

With Leap15 switching to chrony instead of ntp, I thought I would play around with it, see if it is really up to it. Just playing, I have no intention of switching. With ntp, I use multicast ff05::101 which is not supported in chrony, so I figured I could maybe add a link-local address (which is what ntp gets via ff05::101). I tried these, but none of them work: server fe80::208:2ff:fe58:7fac iburst server [fe80::208:2ff:fe58:7fac] iburst server fe80::208:2ff:fe58:7fac%eth0 iburst server [fe80::208:2ff:fe58:7fac%eth0] iburst chrony doesn't compain about any of them, but doesn't synchronise either. Just nagging - the default chrony config uses 0.opensuse.pool.ntp.org which doesn't have a single ipv6 address. Only 2.opensuse.pool.ntp.org seems to have any. [opensuse] archiving mails collectively

Hello, I don't know if this is really on topic on this list, because it's not specific to openSUSE, but the fact is I have to make this works on openSUSE 42.3 (or following) for my part. I work in an association (Linux User Group). We have chairman (president) and associated chairman (vice president) that have nearly the same goal. We want to archive the mails from and to these two people when they work for the lug (of course they have also many other life) We want to have this as much automatic as possible. We want future people to be able to read what have been done par predecessors. We have tried several methods, but none did what was expected. Say we create a mailbox "president(a)culte.org". * If one of the two read the mail, for example imap, it's noted "read" and the other people is in risk of missing it * if one of the two inadvertently delete a mail, the other don't see it * to have the mail sent as "presidence", one have to initiate the mail in the right mailbox, often this is forgotten We can also use a mailing list, but the last * is still there I guess this is not a new problem, can you give me some pointers to one (or more) solutions. [opensuse] upgraded 42.2 to 42.3, now have black screen.

With 42.2 having gone EOL last week, I figured my office test system ought to be upgraded to 42.3 too - not much chance of anything being fixed on 42.2 anymore. So I ran a 'zypper dup' which seemed to go fine - except a) nfs mounts don't work. I can't mount them manually either. b) instead of a GUI login screen, I get a black screen with a mouse pointer. I can probably figure (a) out in time, but I'm a little stuck with (b). I'm using the Nvidia drivers, they worked fine on 42.2. [opensuse] Lots of OpenGL errors in Chrome/Chromium since today

Hi Everyone, After updating security patches and rebooting, I get a ton of OpenGL related errors in Google Chrome 64 and Chromium 63. Since two versions of the browser are affected, I assume that one of these updates caused that but I don't see which change could have cause this. Any ideas? Anyone else get these (try to start google-chrome in a terminal window to see the messages or use journalctl -b)? As far as I can tell, the NVIDIA drivers haven't changed since two weeks. I've used grep to search for strings across all my mailboxes for decades. Found out today, it randomly doesn't work based on whether or not the file contains any text that doesn't comply with POSIX. So if one user has UTF-8 encoding and another, ISO-8859-1, and they are in the same mailbox, according to POSIX, that's a binary file. You have to tell grep to search (and potentially display) binary data -- which can easily through a terminal into weird modes, making it unreadable (see attached example for results of a random binary being listed). Note the last line is the prompt same text as you can see at top of window. mbox files don't do this when you search for strings because when I search for strings I'm looking for something in the text of an email. While I want grep to skip things like compressed files and coredumps, I don't want it judging the quality of "text" that I'm searching through -- but that's what many of the utilities have been modified to do -- if it doesn't fit the POSIX definition of text, then some text utils won't process it. Technically, if the last line of the file doesn't end with a newline, it's also binary (though grep still displays it). Many text utils used to be generally useful -- but now they are having functionality removed to have them only work with POSIX. I suppose no one else really does a quick search through all their email this way any more. Though is this what you'd expect? Sigh.

[opensuse] Leap 42.3 arm - Joy-IT 3,2" Touchscreen?

Hi *, the last days I installed my new raspberry pi3 with openSUSE Leap 42.3 arm edition. I used the XFCE image. Everything seems to work fine except for the Joy-IT 3,2" touchscreen. They have installation instructions for raspbian, but I was not able to adopt them for Leap 8-( Does anyone have some hints on how to achieve this? TIA. Bye.
